  • For many, reggaeton is synonymous with Puerto Rico, after all it’s where some of the genre most popular artists are from, such as Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, Ozuna and Don Omar. But the history of the rhythm goes way back. Inspired by Afro-Caribbean beats, reggaeton has roots in Jamaican reggae and dancehall and in Panama’s plenas, before being remixed by Ivy Queen’s The Noise in Puerto Rico.
Today, artists from all over the Americas (such as J Balvin and Karol G from Colombia, Natti Natasha from the Dominican Republic, and Maria Becerra from Argentina) are making dembow beats, making reggaeton a truly transcultural Latino movement.
But how did reggaeton evolve through time?
