The Celtics teams in those days were the best half-court team in the league offensively and defensively. After the loss to LA in 85, mainly due to transition, they honed that facet of their game and it was a thing of beauty.
I have a lot of respect for the ‘96 Bulls, but having watched both teams play many, many games back in my basketball loving prime…I gotta go with the Celtics. They played the best team ball ever, no doubt. On a side note, they tore down the Garden, but kept the parquet floor and still play on it today. Not completely gone.
No they do not play on the old parquet floor anymore. It was replaced in 1999 and pieces were given to fans and ticket holders. My stepdads mom has a piece of the old celtics floor.
The late great Dennis Johnson was in Birds words the best he ever played with and that is saying a lot. Bird played with some serious talent over the years.
I haven't even started watching this yet ,but I can already tell you there's never been a team like a 1986 Boston Celtics they were unselfish and played as a team and played hard ! They wouldn't be anybody !
Before I finish the video, I got to give a shout out to Big Red for pushing his way to Sampson during that game 5 brawl and shooting to his hips to bring him down to the parquet floor. Looks like Big Bill has been in his fair share of scuffles. No hesitation to help a teammate and brother. You love to see it.
For my money they are the best team ever. Followed by the 96 bulls and 87 lakers. Warriors never had the heart to beat those teams. Shoutout to sharpshooter Scott wedman as well
The problem for the 96 Bulls against this team is matchups. Rodman couldn't handle Bird when he was hobbled late in his career. How do you think he would do against him at the height of his powers? You could put him against McHale, and watch him foul out every game. They could sag Jordan or Pippen, but the the guards would murder you from the outside. And they have nobody to stop Chief. The Bulls were great at transition, turning D into O, but the Celtics hung with the Showtime Lakers. That won't work. Assuming Pippen doesn't have migraines, he would be reduced to an outside shooter; not his strength. Rodman is an offensive liability. And the Celtics guard rotation would limit outside looks from Kerr, etc. The game would be reduced to Jordan doing it all and that just won't cut it. 0 for 6 tells us so. The Celtics have exemplary team defense in fast break and half court sets. They have more offensive weapons and present tougher mismatches. If the series went six, I would be surprised.
When comparing the 96 Bull vs the 86 Celtics team stats the Celtics scored on average 8.9 points more, rebounds Celtics averaged 1.8 more, assists 4.3 more went to the Celtics, Bulls averaged 1.3 steals more, Celtics blocked 2.0 more, Bulls averaged 4.9 three pointers more but three pointers were not shot a lot in the 80’s, Celtics FG% was just slightly better, 3 pointer% was slightly better for the Bulls and FT % went to the Celtics slightly. Those are the facts of the team. Now the Bulls won 5 games more than the Celtics but I would argue that the competition was tougher in the 80’s but I will let that go either way. As for Hall of Famers the Celtics had 5 and the Bulls had 4 so there again close. Now I have to honest here and say once Bird and Magic retired the NBA wasn’t the same and I didn’t watch it near as much in the 90’s. My point is though based on the team stats because for me that is what we are discussing, best team, I have to give it to the Celtics but only slightly. It’s really close and for that reason I understand why you pick the Bulls. However I have never seen a team since the 86 Celtics who could pass the ball as a complete team, every player was not only a great shooter but there passing was mind blowing. It’s why I think kids today should watch the Celtics play the during the 86 season. Well you got your 96 Bulls and I have the 86 Celtics. Flip a coin 10 times and you will see who would have won because it was that close.
Chief was out for track in junior high and ran the race in the race is one full speed lap around the track. According to his bio he didn't like basketball. The basketball coach would pick him up and take him to practice. He claimed not to like it but as he edged up to 7 feet tall in junior high, he was addvized to learn to like basketball. In the end he did. He was on the warriors team, Red made a steal of a trade to get him to the Celtics. That year was 19 81 season. The rest is history. 1981 was the first Celtics championship in the 80's.
'So, after killing God...' Yeah, he caught me mid-sip, so it was spit-take city and then clean up Isle me. Great stuff, mate. You are crankin' these out at a clip. Cheers!
I honestly feel sorry for the younger generation... The 86 Celtics were in my humble opinion the team ever assembled.. Constant motion with back pics with the ball always moving also .. I think you can see why us old farts laugh at this cupcake ass league ..
Clayton just has a way with words. As much as I like his player "Making the Case" series, he really did well with the team series. This team has some of the most beautiful basketball I've ever seen. Despite their talent, depth and hivemind they would have to recreate that game 6 of the 86 finals for 4 games to beat the 96 Bulls in a series. That season is most motivated and pissed off I've ever seen MJ and company. Once again, I feel like I am blasphemous towards this team for saying that, but I have the 96 Bulls in 6 games.
You could also make a case that the Laker teams of that Era were the best ever. Or the Bulls, or the Pistons, or any team with Shaq, or the spurs, wtc.
Warriors were great but their mind-set in no way compares to the 86 Celtics, c'mon, now ... and the Bulls ( not remotely ) ... Even the Mighty 87 Lakers --- the 2014 Spurs are the only team that I can think of (offensively) as Honorable Mention ...
Yah the 72-10 Bulls squad that had Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Harper, Kukoc, Kerr and Phil and Tex Winters leading them? The 70+ team win that ACTUALLY WON a chip? Yah, I'm taking that team. I still think the 86 Celts are up there for sure. It'd be a HELL of a battle.
Celtics depth on that team was loaded. a healthy Bill Walton as your 6th man. Forget it
The Celtics teams in those days were the best half-court team in the league offensively and defensively. After the loss to LA in 85, mainly due to transition, they honed that facet of their game and it was a thing of beauty.
Their conference was tougher too

I think the chemistry on this team trumped every other team in history. Regardless of their records.
Great video. Hard to argue with this take.
I love Dennis Johnson. He was so fun to watch!! He was seriously talented!!!❤
Gotta put respect on his name
The late great Dennis Johnson was in Birds words the best he ever played with and that is saying a lot. Bird played with some serious talent over the years.
A prime Dennis Johnson guarding a prime Michael Jordan would have been amazing to watch.
Your channel is awesome
Glad you think so! Thanks fam!

I think Bill had so martial arts training if I am not mistaken. But you are correct, I was watching that part closely too.
For my money they are the best team ever. Followed by the 96 bulls and 87 lakers. Warriors never had the heart to beat those teams. Shoutout to sharpshooter Scott wedman as well
And Sichting
Parish ran track in school until he got too tall. There is a great interview on Cedric Maxwell channel
Hands down best team
EVER …. 1986 CELTICS !
Never saw five guys play
a game of basketball so
well together …
LEGEND - CHIEF - MCHALE
JOHNSON - AINGE

I saw all those games and, while I respect your opinion, I'Il still take the Celtics. Thanks for reacting to this. It's one I hadn't seen.
Likewise i admit this is arguably the greatest team ever. Its such a valid argument i wouldn’t dispute it hard😂
I honestly feel sorry for the younger generation... The 86 Celtics were in my humble opinion the team ever assembled.. Constant motion with back pics with the ball always moving also .. I think you can see why us old farts laugh at this cupcake ass league ..
96 Bulls weren't as deep from the bench.
I’m glad to see another Ainge fan cuz I LOVE DANNY AINGE!
Danny Ainge started out with the Blue Jays. If I remember correctly he was at 2nd.
I think i did hear he played baseball
Red Auerbach bought out his baseball contract and brought him to Boston.
I take the 86 Celtics over EVERYBODY! ☘️ 🏀

The Celtics had a great bench in 86, too. KC had a full toolbox.
Peace be with you, brother I just subscribed……
This one is good, but I like “1986 Celtics Tribute, the Beautiful Game” even better. ruclips.net/video/O4Td5QRfzj4/видео.html
I just watched it and you are correct. Amazing video, loved how they put together the passing in one film.

Maybe those 2014 spurs are a bit underrated
JORDAN NEVER BEAT LARRY BIRD IN THE PLAYOFFS!! EVER!!
Dont'cha know he'd Love to have just one?
Yah the 72-10 Bulls squad that had Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Harper, Kukoc, Kerr and Phil and Tex Winters leading them? The 70+ team win that ACTUALLY WON a chip? Yah, I'm taking that team. I still think the 86 Celts are up there for sure. It'd be a HELL of a battle.
