In this episode, we finish building our solar batch water heater. Now that the batch water heater is done, we can move onto installing the water heater inside the house. We still have some odds and ends to complete before we can get back to having normal home amenities, but we want to do things right the first time. It's not just about hooking something up as quickly as we can. It's about thinking ahead and relying on as few moving parts and people as possible. Being able to store the sun's energy in a water tank, just gets us one step closer to that goal.
For someone who has never built anything before, Spencer you are doing a great job. Everything looks so professional. Kudos to you both.
**OK, JUST (literally) BINGE WATCHED THE ENTIRE BIULD! Hi, you two (I mean 2.5), My name is Michael, and I'm an Electrician and a first-time commenter from Seattle...
I hope everyone is staying well! I super love the channel, the way you guys film, and your chemistry! I really appreciate the quality way in-which you build things, I've learned a lot, thank you!
A tiny bit of background on my experience: Retired residential electrician (wired about 500 homes)
A few electrical tips, if I may? IMO you've done a good job on your electrical work so far! I only see a few minor things that I'll point out below. Please forgive if these tips have already been offered...
:) NM cable shouldn't be run in conduit for long distances (it can drastically derate the ampacity of the wire, it's essentially like putting a conduit, inside a conduit), it CAN be sleeved for short distances, and should NEVER be run outside in conduit (the paper filler around the ground wire can wick moisture). I'm not sure if you've actually done this or not, it's hard to see everything on the videos.
:) NM cables should be secured as they enter the panel, NOT merely run through a conduit TA with bushing. (a 2 screw metal connector works fine)
:) IMO lighting in bathrooms is tricky, typically lighting from above doesn't lite the face well; you may consider wiring for additional lighting, just in case you decide the can lighting isn't adequate in preventing shadows. I've had success with wall scones on either side of the mirror along with cans; that way light is coming from different directions; thus, lessening shadows.
Future Tips:
*Cans in the Kitchen are great! Placement is critical though, I'm also 6'-3", your head can easily cast a shadow on your countertop if you place cans behind you. Idea placement is directly above the work surface, that way; you, get great light on the tasking area, and the light goes perfectly into the upper cabinets.
*Nailplate everything! Especially if your wiring/plumbing hole gets closer than 1-1/2" to the outer surface (drywall nailing surface)
Sorry for the book, hope it was helpful!

Great and much appreciated advice.
I like how Spencer takes pride in what he does and takes care of it. 👍👍😄😊
I have fallen in love with this couple I don't even know. I am internally cheering for them and celebrating their small victories. For many it would have been easy to contract out much of the work to complete the home sooner but admire them for doing it themselves.
Spencer's level of care and finishing skills are way above the level of an ordinary handyman. So impressed with your work!
He has given every detail so much thought.
I realise nobody's perfect but you guys are sooooo perfect together. Your kid is really lucky to have such mellow, balanced parents. Wish I had parents like you guys...😢
For real Spencer, man to man I’m super impressed with all you’ve accomplished. I’ve got 20 years in construction, I would never attempt a project like this. Soo so much work lol well done you two
Did y’all take some type of classes? You two are so efficient in what you’re doing , your place is adorable and a labor of pure hard work and and bunches of 💕. I love your little family, I wish that someone would make a tv show with you guys. I would let y’all build me a container home any day...my next home will be a downsized one. Keep loving each other and working hard, don’t let anything or anyone stop you!
Don’t even know how anyone could dislike anything they’re doing..this is f*cking cool.
Jealous maybe. This couple are great.
1dayMyers they are jealous and they hate there life
I agree! I have found videos that looked like I hit a thumbs down. I wonder how many were accidents.
It's Good content but something just dont feel right, kinda seems like a hidin show promoted for seasons but what do I kno
There are certain people who are miserable watching others succeed as they don't have any drive to achieve anything on their own. These are the ones who have figured out they can get reaction by stirring their pot filled with their own vile. Best thing we can do is either ignore them or file a complaint and get them banned from this format!
Dear LORD,
Thank you for this beautiful family. Please continue to help them to complete this project safely. I thank you for hearing this prayer.AMEN AND AMEN🙏
Don't forget to install a water heater pan underneath your indoor water heater because when they leak they can flood a home.
Eaxactly...a galvanized tray is all you need.
@@mauriceryton doesnt have to be galvanized, only if its a gas, otherwise plastic is fine
Agree with the pan as well and if you had the legs on the bottom of it also reduces cold air transfer
agreed, it also needs to drain to the exterior or into the sewer system.
Also remember a drain pipe. I had a property with a mold issue due to having the pan, but no way to drain.
You guys are lovely, a match made in heaven! Love is within you to each other, not many couples would go through such an extensive and long term project, including a baby. So much hard work. Everything is already very beautiful, the house, the setting, wow, just amazing! Thanks for sharing your very unique story of love
Hi from the UK, I am currently on lock down and I've been looking fwd to this all day!! Love this couple / family and bear. Be safe everybody x
Theresa Smallman watching from Oz..🇦🇺 love their story too 😀
Hope your all safe there in these uncertain times x
On the water heater. There are thermal blocking pipe nipples that connect to the hot and cold water pipes at the water heater tank. Bonneville Power Admin Mangan Labs found these were the best energy saving add-on to water heaters in their 1980's energy efficiency testing. These nipples contain specific flow blocking beads that stop the heat from escaping the tank and the cold water cooling the tank when the water is not flowing. Love your videos and watching your work and family grow.
Followed you faithfully since the beginning. Wow you’ve come a long way. Well done both of you
You crack me up! That vacuum montage was great. My wife has told everyone over our 43 years of marriage "every sweeper needs a good man to run it" and I have since day one. Love watching you guys and you do such nice work.
Spencer is the man.. he is doing a great job. things are really coming together nicely. looking forward to the deck build. thanks for the share :)
Looking forward to them finishing the interior so that they can move in!
@@fancybrooks3156 yeah....that's gonna be pretty awesome as well.
I was laughing right out at McKenzie’s ”Nature Experience”. Need more of those. 😂😂😂😂👌
Awesome content and great attitudes! That is needed for projects like this! Solid work!
I must say that am truly impressed by your oneness in your project of building this house and your relationship as husband and wife.
I hope and wish you remain as impressive as you are during this project and thereafter and forever. Good luck!
I like that Spencer is so thorough with his projects because doing it right the first time saves you from a lot of headache's in the future.👍
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being present in the moment with your family. Watching you guys grow, and work together has been a genuine joy. Thank you for sharing your lives this way.
Pine trees near your home don’t offer enough shade for cooling to warrant keeping them there. I’d like you to consider removing any pine tree that, should it fall during a storm, could damage your home in any way, your outbuildings or your vehicles. Your reliance on solar would mean the same thing. They just don’t offer sufficient shade to bother keeping them.
Wrap your water heater with a water heater installation blanket also. It will save you some coin.
Wouldn't the blanker then have to be translucent or transparent... in order to still benefit from getting the sun's light in the process of heating the water? Otherwise, what would be the point?
@@SeatBill Indoor Tank to keep it warmer.
Its for the inside unit!
ITS BLACK METAL THE POINT IS THE SUN HEATS IT UP LIKE A BLACK CAR

My husband hoovers our home every week and has done for all the 38 years of our wonderful married life, he’s a complete darling 💋 Edit: I cook him delicious meals. We share everything 50 50 and this was what he wanted from first day of marriage .. I think these two wonderful people will do the same as they get on beautifully. I wish them many happy years xx
Bardotte that’s beautiful, you have a wonderful marriage! Happy spring
In 2011, I replaced my hot water tank with a huge unvented one, that has a secondary coil, and fitted an evacuated tube solar array, which takes the edge off, in winter, but in summer, can fully cater for all my hot water needs. I am so proud of the system.
I just have to say, thank you for your videos. I love to follow your project.
What a lovely house, and you are so good in everything...
I love how you film, explain every step, your humor, family, your house, the water system, the solar system..
You do a great work!!!!!
Micke from Sweden
Should definitely be in a “pan”. It’s got raised edges on each side so that a small leak won’t become a big problem. You could certainly put it on top of that pad you used. I’d consider going back and adding one.
QuestionMan shipping containers can’t be insured lol
I was thinking the same thing
Finally I have watched all 115 episodes! You have done an amazing job on this and have certainly inspired me to do more. So looking forward to joining you on the rest of your journey. Best wishes to all three of you (and Bear of course!). From Steve & Sonia in England x
Plant some green onions around your living area. Clip them from time to time. Snakes hate the smell
Yes your are right.
Thank you for sharing your sweet Beau with us. I pray that her whole life will be blessed. She already has one big one. Parents who love her and each other.
We just had a home inspection and inspector recommended water heater to be off the ground by six inches and also in a drip pan with a drain leading outside
Y’all home looks amazing, goals
Agreed. And at least 4 inches from the wall. This will give you fire safety standards.
Haley Hanson where the hell do you two live??
The water heater is inside the house and it must be 6 inches off the floor & 4 inches away from the wall???
@@ltsgarage7780 Pretty sure it was misunderstood...TPR drain pipe needs to discharge 6 inches from the ground, not the water heater itself. That would make more sense.
Dunjie Zheng that’s been code for 35 or more years. Same thing with the pan. You only need one running to the outside. Put the PTR valve into the pan. Then run the pan outside. Turn it down and then end must be 6 inches off the ground.
The pan code is only about 5 to 7
years old.
The t&p valve running outside is probably 30 years old.
Where do u live??
My dad, a master plumber of 40+ years just agreed with you Haley
Both of you have accomplished so much. Stay positive and enjoy your wonderful family.
McKenzie, I loved your "Nature Experience" segment. Great narration and camera work of a rare breed and in action. 🤣🤣🤣
Same!!!! Omg!!! I really needed that! Seriously, so fantastic! That was definitely my favorite segment!!! So funny!!!
Ahhh the great outdoors

All I can say," God bless you all and your home"👍😊👍😊👌👌👌 Love to see your videos, great inspiration but truly a brave project. You are not just building a container home but a family. Take care of yourself during these times of pandemic.
I almost snorted my chicken soup out my nose! Hahaha! I’ve been having such a down day as I have a sore throat and my upper chest hurts. Been scared all day and crying. Thank you Makenzie, for your wonderful sense of humor with that observation of the male species. I love you guys and you really brought up my spirits!!
Pamela Bellesen I hope get better ,but why are you so scared?I hope you don’t mind if I ask.
How are feeling now? I hope better and not worse.
Darkmindedbutterfly I’m feeling better today and hope it was just a cold combined with my imagination. Why am I scared? I am afraid of getting the virus. I am in my 60’s and have already had pneumonia three times. My lungs are scared and I have severe asthma because of it. I am afraid of possibly dying alone surrounded only by people in hazmat suits. I watched my mother pass from an infection. She already had a pace maker and defibrillator in her. Due to the infection, she was turning sepsis. They intubated her and had to put her on an anti anxiety medication that made her whole body shake uncontrollably. We had to keep pulling her up the bed and get her legs back on the mattress due to it. She was conscious and aware of what was happening to her. At the very least, she was surrounded by her family, we sang to her and each of us assured her of our love and knowledge of her love for us. I do not want to be put on a ventilator and all alone and afraid when I pass. That’s why I’m afraid.
MarMar Bar today I do feel better. I’m hoping it was/is just a cold that combined with my imagination and fear. Thank you so much for your kindness. 🙏🏼
Pamela. Hi. I once had a friend with severe asthma attack when she was in my house visiting. She had forgotten her medication and started to panick. I boiled water and put several drops of oil 31 from Just. The Swiss laboratory. It did miracles and she was soon ok. Of course the virus is something else. I totally get it. Stay safe. Stay at home. Love from Argentina.
Thanks for taking us all on this journey. You two are very blessed. Can't wait to see the finished home
Wouldn’t you put the water heater in some kind of metal drain pan in case it leaks and can be directed outside?
Yep cause to do leak after a time.....
In Canada we pipe the drain valve straight to a floor drain.
Thought I'd share. In 2006, Peter DeMaria a Californian architect designed the first shipping container home in the US. Known as the Redondo Beach House, the home was approved under the national Uniform Building Code (One of the predecessors of the IBC) and was completed in 2007. This was the first real shipping container home. When I find my plans I'll let you know how long I've wanted my container home. You two are an inspiration. God bless.
Love this channel so much. You're a perfectionist and that's what you need when you're building something like this.!

I’ve been waiting for this upload all-day-long! You both give me so much courage. I’m a new homeowner and have learned so much by just watching Spenser - keep up the great work! 😍
I enjoy that he is very meticulous. I consider myself a perfectionist and very anal about most everything. Nice to see someone of the same caliber. The way he wants to provide you two and your daughter a safe and economical home is awesome. You two seem to be the perfect couple. Cant wait to see finish product. Much continued success.
Being self reliant would probably help during these crazy times
Exactly I would rather deal with a few snakes than corona !!!!
Yep.... you’re ahead of the game, when it comes to isolating
So nice to see someone who takes pride in their work.
P.S. A "few" more Mackenzie Nature Adventures documentaries would be enjoyable.

Mackenzie, girl you crack me up! The whole adventure skit about Spencer cleaning was just spot on....
What a great job everything looks professional, yes definitely add a pan under the tank with a drain hose to the outside.

So I typed. Storage unit house. This is the second video of yours I see. I just wanted to say that I'm really inspired of the vision an motivation you have on your project, home, and family. Keep your heads up through everything. Stay positive always. Storms will come but behind the clouds the sun is still there shining bright.
Wow, your baby girl is growing. Time is moving, just from seeing her.
Our boys are all in the trades..electricians, plumbers, concrete, commercial specialty installer...The planning and installing all of your homes plumbing, electrical, and special features are just amazing, especially for someone who's never done it before..Well done..and the baby is adorable..
FYI those sliding glass doors are typically double-pane with a reflective coating on the inside glass to reduce the sun ultraviolet transfer. You won’t get the full impact that a single tempered glass without the coating. Your idea is awesome though! Not trying to be a negative Nancy. 😁
theres actually 3M tint you can buy now days thats clear but blocks a ton of heat.
Spencer has the kindest smile, and Mckenzie is a goofball (in an extremely funny and nice way). The chemistry between you two is so darn cute and perfect. A match made in heaven. Came across this channel by accident and what a ride so far. Been locked inside my house for a good week (btw I'm from India) due to the coronavirus scare, so binge-watching this channel is so therapeutic. Had no idea watching someone build their house from scratch with their bare hands could be so satisfying. I don't know about u guys but I'm dying to see the finished house with u completely moved in with bear (I wish, I could have him. He is such a good boi) and your little munchkin (congrats on her). Kudos to both of u and good luck moving fwd.
I look forward to Sunday evenings so I can watch your videos.
I really enjoy watching you both - I love that he is so careful that it’s just right- I enjoy how you both work together n your baby girl is so beautiful- she looks like her daddy- I’m 70 yrs old n have 10 granddaughter - I hope they all have a wonderful like like yours - I have Escher all the movies you’ve done💞
Absolutely love how your place is coming together, such a unique home to be building, and yes, you can see the extra effort you kids are putting into it, Spencer is doing an amazing job for his family!!!
Oh I am sooo enjoying your videos even more now. Love to see you both laughing and loving each other! HUGS

I agree with Harry Butler. Spencer your building skills are impressive!!! You have the patience of a saint.
After this one, I have officially seen all your guys videos!!! I loved watching them all! I hope all the likes and me not skipping a lot of adds helped you guys! 😊😊
Beautiful craftsmanship, Spenser!
The "snake gauntlet" aka "Blair Witch" scene was hillarious! Well done. Your house is great. It's amazing how you have done it with no past construction experience.
Love watching all your videos. Just brings back the 2 yrs we endured for our DIY makeover of our 920sq foot home...
We have 2 GS, a Chihuahua mix and a Manx cat, no snakes here lol
I can only imagine after you guys are done with everything, the club house youre daughter is gonna have.🤙
Hi guys. I’m in awe of your accomplishments. I live off grid up in British Columbia. And for water heating I used a tankless water heater “Bosch” ( German). I found it so much more efficient than my old water tank system. Might wanna check it out in the future. Cheers.
make sure to put you water heater in a plastic tub with an overflow through the floor along with an overflow off your pop off valve through the floor too. That way if your water heater leaks it will be contained and would drain off without damaging your floor.
I laugh when I see a 50 gallon tank sitting in a 3 inch deep pan with no drain through the floor.
you have a nice project, it is important that you do not lose sight of the finished one. respect for the endurance.
Spencer you are amazing!! Love the way everything is done right and looks great as well. Now McKenzie, girl you should record audio books. Beau must love it when you talk or sing to her. Her name is so fitting. Beautiful family beautiful work beautiful bear...😂🙏😎
Thank you Mckenzie, your funny and creative personality is much needed during these trying times.
Put a pan under with a drain line going outside. Just to save from the inevitable leak when ur not @ home.
Don't go away. Making the deck, a canoe, tree house for baby, gazebo, garden...so many more to cover. God bless you both! 💗
First time leaving a comment. I just watched every video from beginning to end in the last week. Social distancing and containment. Thanks Corona. I love the videos. So sad that I have to wait for the next installment. Congratulations on Beau. So amazing. You have been through such an amazing journey. The property looks so good. You should be so proud of the work you have done to make your dream come true for your family. Keep up the great work and videos.
The water storage tank building is awesome looking. Sweet job
"cleaning his cleaning device!" Im Dyin!! LOLOLOL
And it's on RUclips for prosperity!
@natelin That's the one! Though a little prosperity wouldn't hurt.
You guys are so awesome and inspiring! I know what you're going through after building a tree house in Vermont. There were endless challenges. Started with 2 children and ended up with six, after living 12 years in the trees. No snakes, but a flying squirrel got inside once. Don't worry, you are doing GREAT!
Never criticize a man who vacuums. 😄
That's what I was thinkin!!!
And definitely never criticize when he cleans his "device".
I lived and owned a 38ft sailboat, we sailed the Caribbean for 5 years or so. we rarely took the boat to land we were true off-grid folks. We made our power to charge the batteries with a wind generator. when the wind would blow hard and the batteries were full we would start to make ice cubes. we would do this until the tiny freezer was full of ice. then if the wind was still blowing we would start converting salt wat to fresh water using a 5 gal per hour water maker (reverse osmosis). We have two tanks for a total of 40 Gal. When the wind would stop we didn't have to run the diesel engine for several days in order to charge the refrigerator and fill the tanks. You could say we were storing wind power in ice cubes and fresh water.
lols "he is cleaning his cleaning device" i nearly choked on my evening meal stop it McKenzie :)
Ребята вы супер. Терпения и сил вам в вашем проекте.
I’ve been bing watching for a few weeks and now that I’ve caught up, I’m bummed that I need to wait for the next episode. Love what you are doing! Keep up the great work.
reminds me of the joke "when you clean a vacuum cleaner, you yourself become a vacuum cleaner".
lol
I too loath dirty tools.
Echoing most people’s words FairPlay to you guys, the workmanship is showing pride, chippy myself and for many decades been in construction, and for you guys to have no background it’s impressive. Great patience with the job and each other is great to see also.Looking forward to seeing more, stay safe guys, from 🏴
I've only watched you a short time & by accident. Very entertaining & interesting But Funny personality. You guys ROCK 🤘🏾😄🤙🏾🖤
Nice video, I admire in every video the patience of your husband. He does everything very well and has nerves of steel.

I think after they finished their home, it will be featured to Living big in a tiny house channel because it was a beautiful build even it was not yet done.
Excequel Soriano but it’s not really a tiny house, just a smaller house
You both are awesome..... The "narration" was AMAZING!!! And I have to say, Spencer is becoming quite the master craftsman - Jack-of-all-master-of-some - ...killing it!
Really like what u guys are doing, keep it coming, and i’ve learn so much frm u , so thnk u so much
Please tell us that you’re going to become a general contractor after you’re done building... also, this is my first comment on any of your videos since y’all started, you motivate my wife and I so much to finally follow our dream and live off grid. Thank you, for all your motivation and true emotion in your videos. Keep it up.⛩🇺🇸
Should use a clothe when applying stain like that to the wood, brush doesn’t do the justice a rag or clothe would do. Soaks into the wood 100x better. Just a tip!
I'm starting this project now thank you for the tip...I greatly appreciate it
George friesen,
Wiping is fast, almost as fast as spraying, Wiping is also every bit as effective in all situations except possibly into recesses such as inside corners, fluting, deep carvings and the like. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against brushing stains. I just don’t see why anyone would do it, especially on large surfaces, and even more especially, when using any stain other than a slow drying oil-based stain. All other stains, including water-based, lacquer and all the dye stains, dry too rapidly to allow time to both brush on and get wiped off of large surfaces before the stain begins drying.
@@8lxVenom I believe he was using the stain with sealer combined, brush is best.
If the heater box is properly sealed and you want to get more benefit from it, I suggest to get the entire thing colored BLACK from the inside.
The reflector sheets you have added will fade by time and light reflection will dissipate, but the black color will keep converting light into heat all the time thus the box has to be properly sealed. (minimize air escape)
Hope you got my point and benefit.
OMG! A man that does windows! Do you rent him out??!
My wife and love your channel keep up the great videos, my wife wanted me to Thank you Mackenzie for putting a big smile on her face today with you nature experience narration. 😁💞
Just a heads up, I had those flex hoses on my hot water tank and they started leaching rubber into our water. First a black ring around the bath tub. Then particles in all the faucet diffuser screens. Ended up putting pex directly to the tank.
I have them installed for like 15 years and do not experince that. I loved them and think they are superior
Best looking container house I've seen so far.
So idyllic with all that’s going on, minus the snakes.
Is all that land yours? How far are the closest stores and other forms of civilization? You are living the dream. Love this channel.

Hi guys, I'm Sergio from Ushuaia and I really like the construction process that you have undergone. I get ideas because I'm making a small Iberian tape house. Thank you
I found your channel recently. I have been really impressed with your work, very well executed. I do have one question and forgive me if you answered this in an earlier video but I haven had a chance to go back to the beginning yet. My question is why a batch heater rather than ether a circulating solar system or a hybrid combining both?
Carry on the great work😁
