Thanks for the review. I couldn't even watch this movie myself because the premise is too personal to me. My own father was 13-years-old when I was born by my mother who was 35-years-old. This was in 1991 and his parents didn't even consider the idea of it being abuse, they just treated as "he's a young man who can make his own decisions" so they enabled the two of them to be together. And they were together until he got too old for her and she kicked him out of the house--and it was her house because he had dropped out of school to take care of me while she worked, so he had no job at the time and little education--and I was stuck living with her for several years.
Experiencing the kind of person she was as my mother, witnessing the way that her actions destroyed my father's life, the entire scenario is just irredeemably disgusting. I can't tolerate any depictions of it being anything other than that.

Thank you for acknowledging the innately creepy and disturbing qualities of this movie. I feel like most of the reaction videos I’ve watched so far criticize viewers who’ve criticized it being put in a comedy category. I can see how the movie could fit in a melodrama/over the top/“comedy” genre for people. But I also think it’s unfair to berate people for not finding it comical, but just straight up chilling and uncomfortable. Like, just let people have their reactions and try to be understanding that not everyone will get the humor in a movie about this topic. If people are feeling triggered chances are there’s a reason for it.
More broadly I think the movie is about abuse and manipulation, for anyone who’s experienced that in their life, even (hopefully) to a much smaller degree, I think it’s normal that this movie might hit a nerve and remind them of something they’ve personally experienced.

Great thoughts here. The movie is definitely funny at times, but what I find so clever about it is the aspect of what makes it funny. The material being so disturbing lends itself well to a disconcerting comedy but the movie also plays like a slow burn tragedy. It’s a great movie and comments like these I appreciate for making me think more on it. Thanks for posting this and subscribe to my channel if you feel it! ✌️ 🧡

I sure didn't get the comedy part. I appreciate that it gave a voice to male victims of SA.

I watch the holdovers and I was impressed with the support actor, and someone told me to watch May Dec cause the support actor was also very good.
Well that’s very true. Also, that May Dec make me feel very weird and uncomfortable after I finish watching. I think the main reason is because is base in a true story. Yikes 😬

I just watched the holdovers, the supporting cast was amazing. Incredible movie. And also tonally completely different from May December. The true story quality definitely makes it feel even more weird and uncomfortable. Thanks for watching! Subscribe to my channel if you feel it! Happy New Year ✌️

Interesting ideas, I honestly didn't find natalie portman that creepy or unsettling. or the movie as a whole. I thought what was powerful was that he took this subject matter that we're all revulsed by, and made those characters so complex and human that it felt like a normal family. Yeah they were dysfunctional as fuck, but it felt relatable in a way, even though most of us will never have that experience or at least i hope so lol. This wasn't my favorite movie of the year but I would say it's the most interesting one, even more so after seeing how different your thoughts were from mine

This movie made me deeply uncomfortable. The fact that they were so seemingly normal was what made it even more unsettling. Seems like there’s a lot of different takes about it on the internet. I wish I “liked” the movie more, because the craft of it was so intentional and well executed. I feel very similarly to Carol, though I like it more than this movie, Todd Haynes movies are just cerebral in a way other movies like it aren’t.

I can’t move beyond the fact this movie is closely based on the real life sexual assault and repeated r*pe of a child. I don’t see how anything with this premise could be deemed artistic. A child was victimized and then, due to circumstances beyond his maturity and understanding, compelled to remain with his abuser. It’s disgusting, morally reprehensible, and absolutely irredeemable.

That’s a valid take, especially considering this happened in real life with real victims and abuse. But the movie feels less about that and more about how the film industry and society take a tragedy and flip into something warped and perverted and how people just eat up stories like that. That’s why the movie made me sick 😅 thanks for commenting! 😊

I also was shocked when I saw that it was labeled as a 'dark comedy'. I feel like this was a way for it to compete in awards categories more effectively perhaps? It doesn't necessarily match up to other dramas of the year but perhaps producers thought it might win a best comedy award? I don't know. There nothing comedic about it at all. Its disturbing and triggering. I thought it was excellent at showing manipulation and how it can be used to control vulnerable people. It was horribly uncomfortable to watch but as a survivor of childhood SA, I felt it did a good job at showing common behavior associated with survivors. They often don't see their abusers as abusers, for some it takes years to even realize they were abused and even longer to process the damage it has done. Him crying watching his children graduate was especially moving. He has just begun to realize all that has been stolen from him. I think its brilliant but there are parts of the film that definitely give me the ick.

The ick is definitely a feeling I associate with May December. It’s very delicate subject matter to tackle but the film does it so well. Thanks for the comment and I hope you are healing from your childhood SA, wishing you the best. Subscribe to the channel if you feel it! 🧡

All the actors were great~~Love Natalie and Julianne~~I can't believe these awesome actors took part in this movie~~Also I can't believe this movie got Golden Globe nominations~~It wasn't that great~~The only good thing about this movie were the actors~~They were great~~The movie itself was not~~🙃🙃🙃

@@curtisreviews5880 ~~I normally don't comment but there was just so much crap in this film that was based on reality~~Long story short, there is no real justice~~People actually get away with murder because of a stupid technicality and put back out on the streets to kill again~~There is just to much to explain why myself and friends disliked this movie~~Have a great day/nite and stay safe~~
