@@travisoliver6741 Farum Azula is covered in depictions of the Twinbird, the mother of the Deathbirds, which inflict Deathblight with their screams. Since Farum Azula is the oldest known civilization in Elden Ring's setting, it appears that Deathblight and wormfaces were first created long before the Night of the Black Knives.
@@nightscout9979 You actually find aspects of Godwyn's corpse (But obviously not the real one) and Those Who Live in Death in Farum Azula, indicating that the corrupting influence of it permeates even here. The Twinbird and Deathbirds existed before the Erdtree, and were responsible for burning the dead in Ghostflame. All we know about Farum Azula's own practices involved unalloyed gold for their most important figures (Extrapolating from the Varna burial), so they likely had some form of veneration for the Twinbird. In any case, I've always assumed that the Deathbirds have that Death Screech because of Godwyn. The Twinbird in the statue isn't a misshapen abomination like it's creations. Furthermore, Deathbirds are always mentioned in lore in association with Ghostflame, and everything connected to Death Blight has connection to Godwyn or Godwyn's corruptive nature. Assuming that the Deathbirds at some point looked like their creator, it looks like the Deathbirds have their current form because of Death Blight. And also, as an aside, the Ancient Dragons can't be responsible for Wormfaces because they themselves are weak to Death Blight, as we know from Foetissax.
@@travisoliver6741 I know that some Deathroot growths are up there, but no one is going to be meticulously carving wormface designs into the entire city's architecture ages upon ages after the society collapsed and it became a massive ruin. Those carvings, along with the Twinbird carvings, indicate that Farum Azula had the Deathblight even at the time of the city's construction, and thus that far, *far* predates even Godwyn's birth, let alone his death on the Night of the Black Knives. The various items relating to the Deathbirds, obtained from defeating the Deathbirds no less, call them malevolent (the axe) and fixated on drawing out a person's death (the branch swords), so something as cruel and hateful as the Deathblight may easily stem from them. After all, the centipede mark appears even when using the Ghostflame sorceries, suggesting that the centipede and its significance also predated Godwyn and his death. The dead don't seem to end up burning away in Ghostflame either, hence the screaming spirits of the rancor calls, akin to Rykard's slaves. Just because Farum Azula's society had the Deathblight doesn't mean that the dragons and other beings would have to be immune to the Deathblight. Farum Azula might have venerated gold, judging from the dragons' wings and the Elden Ring mural in Maliketh's arena, but the Deathblight seems to have been part of their civilization too.
In theory, this is what would've happened if the dragon attack on Leyndell succeeded. These two might've fought their way into the Erdtree and claimed the Elden Ring for themselves, one of them becoming a god and the other an Elden Lord. Or they might've woken Placi's sleeping ass up, told him to stop moping about his god leaving him and have him become Elden Lord again. Oh yeah... and cool fight.

That flying fire breath feels like it chains a dozen hitboxes into some Fist of the North Star combo designed to kill unwavering Spirit Ashes.
