This is still my hands down favorite in the series. Being stuck in the Asylum with all the insane people still just gives me the feels. The intro is still my favorite moment in the series. Walking Joker through the entrance while knowing something is off and then seeing Croc walk by being insanely intimidating. The riddles are so good tying in characters from the Batman franchise. The PA system is still my favorite thing about the series. Hearing that very defining ring with Joker chiming in to taunt me is just so damn good. This game for it's time was so damn revolutionary that people still talk about it even today and it paved the way for all the other game. The map layout is hands down the best in the series and was so meticulously well done that you felt every area you visited meant something. This game is also, the most dark and scary one that it feels like a semi horror game. God I love this game.

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  5 лет назад +59

same. And this also makes me hope that in the future we can get another sort of claustrophobic and horror skewed game like this. I love the entire series, but I think that angling Batman into a claustrophobic confined environment where he was stuck with his enemies, many of whom were terrifying like you pointed out, really benefited the games overall atmosphere.

@@DegenerateJay I agree, I would love for them to go the Asylum style route again. After Asylum they strayed so far away from what made it so good imo. It started just being this open world of chaos where you never truly felt in danger as you did in Asylum. Don't get me wrong I love all of the games in the series, yes, even Origins and Knight. I just still prefer this closed off feeling where I had to truly master my abilities as the batman. The other ones felt so much more forgiving and never gave that feeling of being Batman struggling outside of those epic moments with the joker battling inside your brain in Knight(definitely the highlight of that game imo). I truly hope Legacy can capture that feeling again because I missed it so much playing the other 3. Thanks for responding and genuinely caring about the series enough to take time out and speak with others on here. Believe me when I say that responding to your viewers who take time to respond to your videos is a big deal so thanks for that.

@nabil chowdhury Actually in several comics and even animated runs batman does dodge all over against them while getting in free hits because he cant straight up fight them head to head power wise without some type of suit or piece of equipment. Not saying origins fights werent awesome but comics depict batman fighting more like asylum more often. Also, everything is opinion and nothing is fact. I just prefer this game because of all the things mentioned above. If this wasn't directed at me then disregard.

1] Titanlike boss fights (Joker's included).
2] Some of the character concepts you could unlock being a bit defunct later in the series.
3] Inconsistent dropped combos in combat, yeah I'm with you there.
    4] Gordon's character model.
    5] Bane's character.
And what it did more right than the others...
1] Sense of verticality, despite being in such a smaller game area.
2] Question marks unveiled in detective vision, from only a particular angle.
3] The glitch sequence (although I'm not asking for another one - once is enough).
4] Presentation graphics like the angular boxes and bats flying to reveal area names and such.

Here are my biggest issues with the game, granted some could be considered really nitpicky
    1. The nonexistent lip syncing, just look at any character's mouths when they're talking, it's worse than a typical anime dub when it comes to their lip movements matching the dialogue
    2. The thugs all look way too similar. Granted every game in the series has this issue to a certain extent, but in this it feels like they just took the same 3 models, gave them two different skin tones and *maybe* add clown makeup from time to time
    3. Lack of alternate skins. This is a cardinal sin for any superhero game imo, they could've added so many iconic suits but all we got was an armored version of the Asylum batsuit, which we couldn't even use outside of challenge maps

    I'm willing to give the Ivy boss fight a minor pass because (1) it's different than anything else in the game (though you're right about it being dodge/batarang again); and (2) it does sort of make sense for an Ivy fight in that situation -- she'd send minions and try to tank with her plants giving them special powers. The main problem with her fight is that Batman IMMEDIATELY shows he could have called in the Batwing remotely to help but just forgot to...? Or maybe that's supposed to be his arrogant competence. {g}
The main problem with the Croc fight is that it's never even a fight. It's just Croc trolling you for ten minutes of paaaaddding. I hate playing it when I get there in the game, but I do give it points for trying to be different and creative.
The two Zzazz fights aren't really fights, and that's okay, he isn't really a physical threat to Batman. He was supposed to be a Lecter-like super-criminal, but that got written out (handled a little better in ArkCity though!)

i love your videos, man! one thing i do wanna add to this one of their challenges. it's hard for the wrong reasons. in the DLC where you fight an infinite amount of enemies, maniacs are among them. you actually cannot knock them out by beating hitting them enough like normal thugs. you need to crouch over them, hit triangle and bam. another thug can stop that by hitting you. they can't do that when breaking someone's limb or throwing someone else, but batman won't do either to maniacs. eventually, there'll be too many maniacs and the number just keeps growing. yes, i'm aware that you can get lucky by knocking them into one of the the electric gates but that's hard to do considering you're fighting other enemies. i mean... if you give me unlimited enemies, at least allow me to beat them unconscious.
if i'm missing something, please lemme know. i'm trying to beat my high score here.

What I always got from it was that Joker's plan was to create an army of monsters out of the Titan formula, and to try and add Batman to those ranks. When Batman started resisting the change, Joker shot himself up in order to try and get Batman to give in to the effects so he would either kill Joker, go crazy and kill others or just... hurt him a lot? Make him ugly out of spite? Look, you can't expect sense out of a senseless man.
This was all just a bit to the Joker, I'm sure.

9:22 The plot of Asylum was a joint one between Joker and Scarecrow trying to drive Batman insane and turn him into a monster with a combination of both fear gas and Titan to prove he was as crazy as everyone else in the asylum. I think Joker planned to turn both himself and Batman into Titan monsters so they could have a final fight to the death and no matter if Joker won and went on to use an army of monsters to destroy Gotham and kill everyone in it or Batman, despite killing Joker would be a rampaging Titan monster wreaking havoc on the city it would be a win for Joker.

It was honestly just such a stupid plan that I replay through this game more than once every year and constantly don't even care at the very end what he's trying to do. Oh I should hulk out Gordon, oh I guess I'm gonna hulk out Batman, oh it didn't work I'll hulk out myself.

Going on that "how long ago this game came out" thing. I realized that I still lived in our last house when I got that game, and that was a while ago, and then I thought like "didn't City come out when I lived there too?" And yes, fall of 2011! That's insane to me, that feels so long ago.
A way that I can put that into perspective for myself is that, on the run up to City (and even Knight) I would log in to a forum that was all about the Arkham games and see other peoples ideas, share my own, etc. And, while I'm sure people still do, but when was the last time any of you were on an actual set up forum (website) for just ONE specific thing? Not a subreddit, not an "Amino" but a real, on its own forum

Going back and playing Knight is even frustrating after playing games that have perfected the Rocksteady combat formula because you'll randomly drop combos and Batman will go off flying in random directions even when your are pointing the analog in the direction you intend for him to go.

Ngl the Joker boss fight would been better if it was like the Mr Freeze Boss in City where he adapts and you have to use different ways to attack him instead of him just trying to hit Batman before leaving to pose while sending out thugs.
Then again, boss fights were last minute additions to the game (plus Rocksteady at the time only had a handful of people).

I think after City and Knight the combat from Asylum got dumped on so much! But here’s the thing! This happens all the time whatever game you’re playing, the gameplay upgrades piece by piece. The gameplay in Asylum isn’t as good as
Knight, Origins or City’s gameplay. Asylum’s gameplay was revolutionary!

about the combo mechanincs, once you get a hold of stuff, you wont drop combos, like at all, thugs become a piece of cake. even like 20-25 are no deal. you have to judge the timings and target the people from there. although it is kinda bland if only 2 guys are there

Nitpick but I wish the ghost of arkham turned out to be hugo strange it would just make more sense because it would tie in to his obsession with the minds of criminals and batman and be a segway to his arkham city plans and show that he himself has a bit of a strange mind I could just see it as a way for him to be involved in the arkham story more like maybe he starts out being obsessed with the joker but after witnessing the events of arkham that’s when he starts focusing more on batman as the cause of all the madness

The one thing I disliked most about the Titan Joker fight was the use of the henchmen. It makes sense, but I feel like for a final boss, henchmen should've been taken out of the equation. It should have just been Batman and Joker to duel it out, and that's it. It would've made for a satisfying ending.

I agree with your complaints about the boss fights in general, but the one boss fight I did like was the Poison Ivy fight, while my least-favorite was the Killer Croc fight. Honestly, it's probably in part because the Ivy fight was extremely brief, while the Croc fight seemed to take an eternity thanks to the no-running rule and the needlessly repetitive "collect the spores" gimmick. And sure, you use the Batarang against Poison Ivy, but at least you're not having to throw it at a character who is charging at you, a la Bane, the Titan monsters, and, yes, Killer Croc. The zoomed-out camera during the Ivy fight also led to a refreshing change of pace in the gameplay. For once, the game felt _fast_ instead of sluggish and plodding as it did in so many of the other boss fights.

Post-stroy in this one is strange, because it not meant to be, due to the fact that after last Gordon conversation Batman fly's off in batwing to go after Two-face, it's said in cutscene.
Combat is olay, i would say that it's okay as much as resident's evil movement, slugish at first but nice overall. It might requre a bit used to, btw if enemies are down, just go for ground-pound, it's not restricted.

Joker's plan was to have an army of monsters, ie Titan henchmen and escape Arkham. I don't think Batman was part of his plan (although, obviously Bats would try to stop him). As Joker says before the last boss fight (which was awful), "you're ruining my big night." He didn't necessarily want to turn Batman to a titan freak. But Batman had stopped Joker from escaping Arkham. That's the way I always thought of it anyway

Love the video but I only have one problem with one of the points you made and it’s one about the joker trying to turn Batman into a titan monster, the joker is someone that is literally consumed by chaos and lives off it, turning Batman into a titan monster would lead to the destruction of Gotham and Batman would kill multiple civilians giving joker what he wants plus Batman would finally kill him because the joker just wants to see the world burn and Batman knows that a titan version of him would be unstoppable so that’s why the joker tried to originally turn Batman into a titan

Played the first 2 games in a row in a handful of days, and I was blown away at the start of city walking around as bruce wayne fighitng and climbing by how much better movement and combat were than asylum. I'm glad I played asylum first here because it would have been a bit annoying (not terrible but annoying) to go to that after trying city first. Still haven't played the other 2 yet but I'm hoping there also good, first 2 were both fantastic.

That’s why Jim Gordon,Batman and his Bat Family are the only competent people in Gotham City. The rest of law enforcement were once good,or were always corrupt. Also why the villains are always locked up in the Asylum, was mentioned in one of the episodes of the BAS. They’re put there because, they were arrested by a Batman a vigilante and Jim Gordon. However the rest of law enforcement doesn’t think like Jim. Bullock for example was very much deep with Falconi before meeting Jim in Gotham’s standpoint. In the Burtonverse it was Eckhardt and in the Nolanverse it was Flass. Later however the canon character Bullock becomes more trusting of Batman and becomes a good ally of Jim.

Joker's plan was to make Batman hulk out and go crazy. And the plan was more about the journey rather than the endgame, making Batman fight everyone else for his own amusement. He just wanted to cause chaos. But when he saw Batman resist the change he thought that he could make just as much chaos if he hulked out so he shot himself with the Titan. Very much in character. Terrible boss fight though.

  • @jasonpratt5126

"Joker had no plan at the end." -- strictly speaking, he did, but Batman foiled it already. (I don't mean "turn Batman into a mad Titan". I mean "TURN ALL OF GOTHAM INTO AN ARMY OF CRAZED TITANS!") This was more like a desperation consolation prize that Joker threw together at the last minute. Which is fine, in context. They even spell that out in the cutscene dialogue. That didn't bother me. What did bother me was that the Joker had captured Gordon, as a surprise hostage, which didn't make much sense, because by the end of the game I felt no particular hurry to go stop the Joker instead of, say, tooling around after the Riddler nonsense.

    1. Some mundane bosses, mostly Joker, Poison Ivy and the overuse of titan fights
    2. Compared to the newer games, Batman feels less fluent and fastpaced to control
    3. The combat tends to get finicky from time to time (which also holds true for the sequels, just not as much)
The lack of customization doesn't bother me and to me doesn't get in the way of anything but would still have been nice to see
