Utsunomiya station -> Tokyo with shinkansen, 130 km in 48 min Utsunomiya station -> Haga Takanawa Industrial Park 12km in 48 min. 12km in 48 minutes.... ???? Trams are great, but not like this.
Shinkansen serves a different purpose than an LRT. The LRT is local transit with much lower demand than the Shinkansen. If the Utsunomiya-Haga Line had a Shinkansen level of investment then it would’ve never been built. It’s primary purpose was to relieve congestion near the industrial district in Haga, city centre in Utsunomiya and other places of interest like Utsunomiya University Yoto Campus & Seiryo High School. It wasn’t built with the express purpose of connecting two destinations, it was built to connect multiple places in a timely fashion to relieve congestion. In this case, it does it’s job much better than a Shinkansen or commuter train could since it only requires 1 driver per train & shares a pre-existing ROW w/ car traffic with one bridge built & some corridors carved out where needed.
@@jasperli I totally understand that shinkansen are different from trams. But if I have to go to work, live near the train station and realise that I need to spend roughly 50 minutes in a full tram to get to a major industrial center, then imho something is wrong with the connection. Especially when there is no alternative. This generates long travel hours, packed trams during shift changes at the factory and unhappy riders because the at certain times the trams are always loaded with people. YES! for the locals, this tram is immeasurably valuable. For employees that live along this route, it is also very valuable! But if if you have to depart from the train station... or even arrive at the train station by train and then still need to take a 48min tram ride to get to work with no alternative in between to shorten the journey, it feels to me this is a great idea on paper that did not translate well to reality.

Compared to the Shinkansen, the speed is slow.
