    Sajhā ke sab pariwār ko, sajhā muralī kī tār.
    Apano' se mukh moṛ ke, Mathurā chale re Kānhā.
    Shared mother’s love, shared father’s love;
    Cow-herds friendship, cow-herdesses charms.
    From all shared family & shared flute-strings; Kanha (lovely
    youth) turning away from his loved ones, went to Mathura.

    1.(Refrain) Sūnā sūnā lāge, Viraja (Braj) kā dhām;
    Gokul ko chhoṛ, chale re Ghanshyām. (both 2)(ĀĪŪṛāīū)
    Listen, listen, Ghanshyam (the adorable dark-one) started

    Bhara bhara nainā roye re gavāle (2); roye Viraja kī gaiyā.
    Rāha rok kar roye mansukā (2); bhīkha rahe' more Shyām re.(Ref)
    Yamuna cries, Madhuban cries; the shadow of crying-steps.
    Their eyes filled with tears, the whole of Braj is crying.
    They cried while standing in the way; begging Shyam (not to go)
    3. Khola sake nā ghar ke panchhī; āsuan se bhare nainā (2).
    Ājā Kānhā, nā jā Kānhā; nā jā Kānhā, nā jā Kānhā;
    Ājā Kānhā nā jā Kānhā; kuke re pinjare kī mainā.
    Nadiyā' roye, Girivar roye; le Kānhā kā nām re. (Ref)
    Like the maina-birds who can’t open the cage, they all cried;
    “O Kanha, please don’t go. Please don’t go, Kanha. Stay.”
    The river cries, they all take Kanha’s name; Krishna also cries.

    0. (Refrain) Dhobiyā jal hī me' (men) maratā piyāsā. (2)
    The washer-man (the soul) stands there right in the waters
    (of divine knowledge), (yet is) dying of thirst (ignorance).
    1. Jal me' thaṛ pīye nahī mūrakh, achchha jal hai khāsā. (2)
    Apane ghar ke maram na jāne (2), kare dhobiyan ke āshā.
    Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain) (Āṛāūī)
    Standing in the water, the fool doesn't drink - (but) the water is good.
    He does not know that's the body's essence - he only wants to wash.
    He, right in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst.
    2. Chhin me' dhobiyā rove dhove, chhin me' rahe udasā.(2)
    Āpe bandhe karam kī rassī (2), āpan gar ke phansā.
    Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain)
    One minute the washer-man weeps aloud - the next, he's motionless & sad.
    He himself is braiding the noose of his deeds - and tying it around his neck.
    He, right in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst.
    3. Sachhā sabun lehī na murakh hai santan ke pāsā. (2)
    Dāg puranā chhutat nahī (2), dhovat bārah māsā.
    Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain)
    The fool forgets to pick up the soap of truth - that wise men always use.
    The clothes have an ancient stain that won't go away - even by washing
    for twelve full months. He, in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst.
    4. Ek rātī ko jorī lagāve, chhori diye bharī masā. (2)
    Kahe Kabīr suno bhāī sādho (2), āchhat annā upāsā.
    Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain)
    He uses up all his strength for a mite & gives up a thousand times more.
    Says Kabir, "Listen carefully, brother - in the presence of food, you fast.
    He, right in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst."
