Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical - Scary Chalkboard scene

Spoiler Alert! This is a preview of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical that made its debut in the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on 21 February 2019. It shows what we would describe as the “chalkboard scene” in Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical whereby five-year-old Matilda Wormwood uses psychokinesis to scare the wits out of the ultimate bully, the Trunchbull or the headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Following which is the musical number, “Revolting Children”.
This scene originates from “The Third Miracle” in the book Matilda. You will see how Matilda cleverly uses psychokinesis or telekinesis to pick up a chalk and write on the classroom’s blackboard.
The message is for the evil headmistress and it causes her to believe that Magnus had returned to the mortal world to issue the Trunchbull an ultimate warning to return the home she had wrongfully taken away from Miss Honey and to flee thereafter. Failing which, Miss Trunchbull would face horrible consequences. Magnus is the late father of Miss Honey, Matilda’s teacher.
The musical is inspired by Roald Dahl’s book, Matilda, the famed author’s last long children’s book published in 1988. Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and is playing for the first time in Asia, after having toured Australia and New Zealand between 2015 and 2017.
This is a highly entertaining and energetic musical production for both children and adults. In London, Matilda The Musical is in its seventh year and it has won more than 85 international awards of which 16 are for Best Musical.
Matilda The Musical boasts of an original score by Tim Minchin, an Olivier Award winner and Tony-Award winning playwright Dennis Kelly. Staging is by Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus and choreography by Tony Award winning Peter Darling.
In our opinion, this musical is obviously far more appealing for Roald Dahl fans, especially those who have read the book Matilda. For instance, they will relate more to the chalkboard scene and will immediately know that “Agatha” is actually the first name of Miss Trunchbull and Jenny is Miss Honey.
We also believe audiences who have read the book will have a more enjoyable time spotting the modifications made for the musical. For example, in the book, Miss Trunchbull passes out and collapses onto the floor after reading the mysterious writing on the blackboard. In the musical, she immediately runs away.
Our take is that between the book and the musical, there is no argument to the chicken-or-egg question. For those who haven't read the book, well, please read the book first and you’ll be in for a treat with a far more enjoyable time watching this wonderfully creative musical.
