The pricing on these rare cars in US when something is slightly damaged or missing is insane. "Well there was a fire, and it's been repaired now. And there's some carpeting missing. But in EU you could still register it as a new car, as it has 3000 miles on it which is slightly under 5000km. So will you take a 50% discount from the market price? Because if you don't then next week we're gonna up it to 75% and not tell you."

I used to have family that worked at a ford dealer and one day was in getting my truck serviced and chatting up my SIL. The sales manager popped out of his office, hey Mikey, got a minute? I walked over "what's up"? "have I got a deal for you...." Someone had put down $40,000 on a gt, red with white stripes, car came in, and they backed out of the deal. I could have gotten it for $140,000 cdn (about $95K USD). WHOA...."can we take it for a drive"? Umm you know I like you and all but no lol.
The thing was, I was doing well financially at the time and could have swung it. The biggest issue I had was no place to put it. I lived in a loft and only had 1 outside space for parking and needed that for my truck so I'd have to rent a garage somewhere and at the time, they were easily $400 a month on top of the car payment and the insurance etc.
Another kicker: the taxes here in Ontario are outrageous. HST alone would have been $16,000 on top of all the others.

@@alallen1030 My 55 years experience in the automobile world is a bit more than yours Gomer....German cars are designed to last the warranty period. After that they are money pits. BMW and Mercedes make a fortune selling extended 6 year warranties for a reason. By 100K miles they are shot, which why a $100K Mercedes, Audi, or BMW will sell for $18K in about 6 years....and the fool who buys it will have $20K in repairs the first year: sensor failures, bio-degradable wiring replacements, all hydraulic failures ($10K to replace on a convertible top because of a simple hose leak), gaskets, electrics.....and someone like you will just call it "maintenance"....no it's called REPAIRS. SLK's were the worst....go back to dream land, you have zero clue what you are talking about.

The $40,000 mass produced cars work....it is the low production $400,000 cars you have to worry about, because they only work after being driven off the lot. The buyer is the guinea pig driving a test bed project who will soon find all the faults of a low production car as it soon sits in the shop with sudden defects that can't be fixed. If it was designed by the Germans, who over complicate everything (one of the reasons they lost WWII, they never learn), it can only be worse!
