      Yep, that is where they would get that dialect from. I know many Scandinavians, & Dutch. Same thing for Wisconsin & the Great Lakes area, settled by many Scandinavians, so they make cheeses & their dialect is also similar. Also. Buffalo, NY & Syracuse, NY. Syacuse, NY, has a harder dialect like that. Then, Buffalo is softer. & Chicago is still softer, & North Dakota is kind of ~ in there along with them somewhere. A mixture of them.
      Even Canadians have that type of lilt to their sentences.

    My uncle recalls delivering a big care package to a battalion of the Minnesota National Guard in Iraq. His guys called it "The Blond Battalion", as it had a lot of women of Scandinavian ancestry.
    They dropped off the package, and were met with lukewarm thanks. Care packages tended to be toothpaste and deodorant and that kind of thing.
    The next time he met that battalion, their praise was effusive! That last package was awesome. Someone stateside figured out that women wanted lipstick and mascara and perfume. So that's what they sent.

      I remember I got a care package once at my brigade everything in it was expired by years and smelled like mildew. They asked for a letter back with a picture of their care packed I sent them pictures of all the expiration dates a positive mildew test(had extra from testing my barracks room) and a action shot of throwing it into the dumpster. I felt insulted, someone cleaned out their cupboard and linen closet, packed it In a box to feel better and brag what they did it.

    I went back to my hometown in ND for a funeral after living in California for 30 years. It was 25 below. As I waited for my ride, the lady at the hotel desk said, "I have a car you could borrow." I was incredulous! I said, " But you don't even know me!" She replied, "Yah, but you SAID you're FROM here, and you SEEM like a NICE girl." Yep. North Dakotans are good people. I'm proud to have grown up in ND.

      Yeah, we were stationed in NoDak for 5 years. There was 1 murder in that time - ONE - a double at a farmhouse a mile off Rte 83. We NEVER locked our doors, and NEVER got robbed.

      I lived in Dickinson and Camped in Medora, there's really nothing special about North Dakota, I had to get out of there, the summers were 30 degrees at night sometimes...I'm from South Louisiana....LOL Medora's actually very beautiful and they have gigantic monarch butterflies and you can see the northern lights from there. I'd never be able to live there in the winter though.

    As a former USAF Security Policeman assigned to the 741st MS, 91st MW at Minot AFB ND 1995-97, I can confirm that North Dakotans talk like that. I joke that they all went to see "Strange Brew" together and after the film voted to talk that way forever more.

    I started out my military career in the Army National Guard at 17 (and went active duty later). I’m from Alabama and went to basic at Ft Dix NJ, and I don’t know who was dealing with the changes in accents more, the people in Newark Airport or myself lol! One of my best friends from the Army is originally from Massachusetts and has that serious accent when she’s pissed off or drunk; “Get the kah so we can go to the bah!” 🤣🤣

    I believe this is Norwegian or other Scandinavian accent. It is prevalent from ND, Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and into the UP of Michigan. It's awesome.

      Minot ND is the home of the largest Scandinavian Festival outside of Scandinavia. It's called the Norsk Hostfest, and it's held on the ND State Fair Grounds. I just looked it up, and it will be happening from 27 to 30 September of this year.

And if the sagas and Olaf's statements that he is a great grandson of King Harrold Finehair, all the way back to the Yigling family one of the oldest Norwegian names. Of course the State of North Dakota didn't exist yet the land was claimed by the crown till someone else objected. It's convoluted anyways. I looked at an old map and half of Canada was Virginia so figure that out. Nobody from Virginia had ever been that far north or west 😅
