Using the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini WITHOUT a DAW - Standalone Demo for Beginners & Pros!

- The M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini is an amazing portable controller if you're just learning to play keyboard, or you're a seasoned player trying to get into computer audio & midi! In this video I talk about using the USB powered M Audio Oxygen Pro Mini standalone without any DAW and how to use the included virtual instruments such as the Mini Grand (Piano sounds), Hybrid 3 (Synth sounds), and the Velvet (Electric Piano sounds).
It's as simple as plugging the Oxygen Pro Mini into the computer and pulling up the virtual instruments to jump right in and start playing! If you're a beginner that's just starting out and want something that is going to grow with you I think the M Audio Oxygen Pro Mini is a great option to just plug and play, but also have the ability to learn computer recording and DAW's as you grow!
I also give some tips on how to fix latency and talk about the transition from just playing virtual instruments to actually starting to learn and use a DAW!

This M-Audio seems like a great average-consumer oriented option to start. At around 100-110 EUR where I'm at, doesn't seem like a bad option at all. A few extra keys beyond 25, plus faders - though no endless knobs -, and it looks damn well sexy and professional. It's on my options list, for sure; an upgrade would go for the Oxygen 49 Pro, to keep it small but workable without changing scales a lot.

So, first thing I want to thank you for all the content you made about the device, because RUclips, like all the web, lacks of infos. I saw all your videos about it and you did a fantastic job, but despite your precision and clarity there are some questions I have and I can't find good answers anywhere. In short, I would like to know how the Oxygen Pro Mini behave with external hardware modules via the MIDI out. It would be awesome to see a video on the subject, but I imagine it would be complicated, so it’s ok if you can just answer some questions. How well the controller performs with external modules sending Control Changes? In particular, I’m curious about switching banks to control different parameters with knobs, faders and pads. Is it possible to switch the banks in Preset mode or it works only on DAW mode? For instance, can I assign one fader per MIDI channel (4faders x 3banks)? I have a 61 key Oxygen Pro and I love it, but, unpacking it and putting it on my desk or the dining room table just takes too long when I just want to poke around a bit. The mini is perfect. I keep it under my desk and it's so easy to grab on a whim. Then I can plug it right into my desktop or pull out my ipad 12 pro and plug it into that. Perfect quick setup to tinker around on!

Maybe not all easy as I thinking, my first idea was create back music for my hobby movies edits.
Doing (in Grand) without any MPK connections was OK, then just save it and load in movie project.

May I know whether this keyboard is compatible with the half-pedaling function of continuous expression pedals such as Roland DP-10, Yamaha FC3A or Korg DS-1H (Sending cc through 0-127 depending on the pressure applied) please? Thank you for this great tutorial. I am using an Oxygen Pro Mini with AUM on iOS. It does not bother me that there is not an iOS daw mode. I can program what I need. You have been very helpful for that. With all the Hoopla around Loopy Pro it would be wonderful if you made a video showing a good way to marry Loopy Pro with the Mini.. I have not purchased Loopy Pro yet but I would pull the trigger on it if someone made a good template for it. If not you then maybe one of your followers has a lead on this idea. Thank you very much for these tutorials. I followed your earlier uploads on the mini and have set up mine. May I ask if there's a way to make the keys more sensitive to presses on the Oxygen Pro mini?
I find the default sensitivity to be too weak; like I need to press them harder to sound close to what the mouse cursor press does on the virtual keyboard on any plugin. Thank you very much!
Thank you! Yes there is, on the controller go into the global menu (hold shift and press the Mode/Global button) and scroll to the velocity setting. You can change that from low, medium, high, linear, or a few different fixed modes. Hopefully that will help you get a better sensitivity level!
Like your second scenario, Is it equally good for DAW-less setup that has a USB host device in the setup? I have Bitwig Studio and a Maschine+ but want something to use that is more immediate. I know the M32 integrates with the NI software but the Maschine already has those controls
One could also buy a raspberry pi, and use a fluidsynth to play.(also headless), sound output to HDMI or Bluetooth or analog out.

Are the smaller size keys a problem for someone who wants to learn proper piano with full size keys? Seems like getting used to 2 different key sizes is almost like learning 2 different instruments. thoughts?

I recently purchased an Oxygen Pro Mini and am having some real issues with the DAW mapping on MPC Beats. I had an Akai MPK mini and had no problems whatsoever, but when I switched to the Oxygen Pro Mini, the MPC Beats DAW mapping seems really off (pads don't line up, knobs/faders don't work). Any thoughts on that in the video would be appreciated!

Hi DSoundman. I just read in the page of Pro Tools That the Pro tools first has been discontinued. If that is the case haw M audio is going to replace it?

Listen guys, being a busker, I want to integrate Keyboards into my reggae Combo. Live keyboard playing as well as looping tracks. The keyboard should be small and a stand alone instrument, powered by usb or batteries. What model do you recommend?
If it's still relevant there are akai mpk mini play. Sounds on it not that good but it could play them standalone. And you can also connect it, like other MPKs.
I heard only really works with pro tools logic, is this correct nice board but wanna use ableton and or FL studio. This pretty much program out if box for P tools logic ty.

Hi there! I'm not aware of the ability to record inside the standalone, but most, if not all virtual instruments come with a plugin version that can be used inside a DAW to record!

I’m still confused about this unit. So is it really “standalone” (after downloading the software and sounds to it) or do you still need to interface it to a computer using the editor?
I don’t care about not hearing sounds coming out of an onboard speaker, but I would like to at least hear the “internal” sounds from headphones.

I thought I made up my mind to get the 25 key version, but this video has me interested in the mini with 32 keys. Any advice between the two? I’m a beginner that wants to learn keys and do more virtual instrumenting.
just make sure you consider that the 32 key model has tiny keys, so that may not be the best way for you to learn. I'd look for something with full sized piano keys, that will help you going forward.
@@danielberezowski1523 hi Daniel. Thanks for that feedback. I believe I’ve made my mind I’m getting the full sized 25 key version which also semi-weighted keys. Probably no where close to what a piano feels like but I’m guessing better than not. And 25 keys is really limiting but I think that my force creativity. And I can always upgrade if I take to it.
Amazon has a like new version of the full size that was $20 less expensive than the mini-key version so I think that’s the winner.
I’ve always wanted to learn keys. I play a little bit of guitar, bass and drums and Ive always wanted to learn but haven’t loved the feeling and response of the keys of the really cheap keyboards I’ve tried. Hope this is better. Not expecting ivory, just something.

I’ve never tried it with an iPad or smart phone, but I’ve heard of people doing that! Just not sure how well it works.

I've successfully connected my Pro Mini to both a Lenovo Tablet and a Samsung smartphone using an OTG cable and it works OK. I use a couple of free Android apps - FluidSynth Midi and SynprezFM. Low volume might be an issue in a party setting although I do connect the tablet to my mini HiFi system with an Aux cable occasionally for extra noise. On an unrelated topic can you use the Pro Mini pads for playing drum sounds? Thanks.

I got the m audio o. Pro 49 but i cant find the keys for velvet minigrand and so on. So i assume its just a trial version. Am right?
No it’s the full versions! If you login to your m-audio account on their website, the software manager authorization code is the activation code for those instruments.

I am rly rly happy right now, because i bought the midi Controller to get into music making (Electronical prefered) and just sitting there and learning some piano turned out to be the Thing i enjoyed the most. After 1 month i stopped because the trial went off. As you alrdy mentioned the 49 key Version is a very affordable way to get into music making. I would probably consider the 61 key next time but 49 works for alot of Songs alrdy. (and takes less space) the small one would be too small for learning piano...thank you again. Sry for my bad english and the german Auto correction on my Smartphone.

Hi there, do you have a virtual instrument you are trying to play with the controller? No firmware should be needed as it runs off the universal drivers.

@@DSoundman i just got my oxygen pro 61 and when i click the get button in m audio software it says pro tools first is temporarily unavailable and when i dug deeper i found out its shut down if its not please show me some functioning download link🙏
