Not really a beat if there is live instrumentation on the track. Ron Fair arranged and conducted the strings as those are live strings on the record. There is also a real guitar player and a bass player. Real instruments was used in that era when Producers hired session players esp in the 90s. No different than what Quincy Jones did.
The term beat refers to the instrumental, at least I feel that was the speaker's intention with the term

She had nothing to do with the instrumentation. She was the Vocal Producer. ITs crazy that people doesn't understand the role of a Record Producer. There were at least 3 other producers on this song including Ron Fair himself that also arranged the strings.

That's what's wrong with thr younger generation as they think every Producer makes beats when that's not the main role of what a Producer does. I mean Quincy Jones didn't even write, arrange or compose anything for thr Thriller album. He hired musicians and directed their musical performances. Missy Elliott is also clearly a singer if if never knew which makes since in arranging R&B vocals as a Vocal Producer. She did NOT make the beat, that's some one else listed in the credits. She clearly was a Co-Producer as her role as the Vocal Producer that assist in arranging the vocals. There's also live strings on his record which typically for Record Producer's to hire musicians. Larry Gold usually the go to String Arranger and Conduct for R&B, Hip Hop and Pop records. He arranged the strings for Cry Me A River and Brandy and Monica the Boy is Mine. Producer's produces records. Beat makers just make beats. There's a massive difference. Hell I work with one Gerald Leverts groups he put together back in 1999 as I bit you maybe too young to even know who Gerald Levert was as he was a Writer and a Producer and he never made beats either. Diddy don't make beats either and he's a Record Producer. The group of people I work closely with have been in th Studio with Diddy, Mario Winans, Gerald Levert, Babyface...
You can tell Missy had been around Timbaland for some years. Can sense a touch of his style in this also. Not a bad thing at all.

Too many people think just because you make beats automatically makes you a Producer when in fact that's not even the main role of a Record Producer. Producer's are lik the directors of Film and TV. A beat maker just make beats and that's it. A Producer produces the record. Missy is a real Producer that actually called the shots that assisted in the Vocal arrangement of this record.
