Private venture capital increasingly popular in Kenya

  • In today's entrepreneurial landscape, access to capital stands as a barrier for many start-ups, particularly in emerging markets. Traditional financiers that are averse to risk risk and with stringent lending criteria, often overlook early-stage ventures that lack collateral or substantial revenue streams. This is why venture capital has become increasingly attractive to the sector. Kenya attracted close to Kshs. 140 billion in venture capital in 2023 surpassing other large economies like Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa as a recipient of this investment.

    One of the reasons is advantage of any dollar rich foreign investor because of the weak Kenyan shilling. It is fair to say dollar rich investors are buying in (investing) cheaply into Kenyan startups in a time when the business environment is very murky

    Kenyans in diaspora can actually invest in startups and become shareholders…you see European investors chipping in instead of us for us
