  • in this video i discussed Why IGBT Burns Out After Replacement - IGBT Damaging Reasons. the reasons and factors which are involved in IGBT failure, specially when we replace ibgt in induction cooker, inverter igbt welding machine, dc inverter ac outdoor unit boards, sewing machine inverter control board, top loading or front loading washing machine inverter boards, solar inverter boards, variable frequency drives (VFD). there are many factors involved in this scenario, material failure, how to select igbt specially VCE sat, power dissipation, zero crossing detection, resonant frequency, resonant coil, resonant capacitor, and teh gate drive components,
    main root cause is the low quality standard of the components,

    For better result:
    1) Always check the ESR of the resonant capacitor and the internal insulation.
    2) Remove all flux residue with a little brush and pure alcohol.
    3) Apply electronic silicone to the solder pins of the IGBT and the driver on both sides of the PCB to prevent moisture in the air from activating the gate of the transistor.

    One of the most important points that should be consider is: to recognize "Counterfeit" Components from the "Original" ones.
    Counterfeit components make us "CONFUSE"

    I also recommend to use a transistor tester before you install the part so you can check the capacitance and vge. This goes also if you have a bunch of transistors you need to change, test them all and select the ones that are close in value. With all these chinese parts now sometimes there are defective parts or out of spec. Always test before install.

    When I saw this, I think first at the fake component avalaible on ebay and aliexpress. They are sometimes rebranded, and gate capacitance is not the same, and bandwitdh is different. THis is the reason why it works few hours, and failed when overheating.
    If the capacitor of the LC circuit is dead, you will maybe just have a lack of effeciency. Thanks for the video, god bless you.

    Your video was very helpful. I had changed in a mini welder the Igbt's because they burned out and one of the new one was always to hot 115 degrees Celsius one had approx 70kohm internal resistence and the other one approx 650kohm and that's why was to hot.

    Very GOOD video, Sir. Sourcing components is HUGE issue. Too much falsely marked JUNK from non-authorized-distributors. Sometimes seems quicker or cheaper, but not really; and clients get mad when equipment down over and over. Now, in USA, i ONLY buy from Digikey and Mouser. Clients and me are happy to get OE performance out of repaired equipment.

    When choosing a replacement IGBT, don't forget to check whether or not the component you are replacing and your replacement component have an internal flyback diode! Most modern devices contain this, but not all. Always check your datasheets.
    Don't assume that adding one where there was not one before is a good idea. Generally it is best to use the exact same part the manufacturer used whenever possible.

    clear explanation. if we are using polarized capacitor then it will not affect the capacitor changing the direction of charging current from inductor.

    Hi Haseeb. My capacitor is 800V 0,25micro farad. I measured 230 nano farad. Is that problem. Also I have 4 IGBT who works on two couples for each end of the coil. One of the couple give me a short circuit if I measuring on board. If desoldering them their value are normal. This their condition is same if there is no power on the motherboard. I had short circuit damage and one IGBT was burned. Also big diode between rectifier and IGBT. What is your opinion. I ordered other three IGBT to replace them too.

    Thanks for your support. However there are two thermistors in the circuit for over Temperature. So when the IGBT overheats then the Microcontroller is supposed to switch off, can you throw some light on this?

    I have Induction cooker . Replaced igbt pair already. But nearby ZD diode also shorted. The diode in other side of cooker reads as normal diode perhaps IN 4148. Do u think is standard N4148 is ok to replace?

    Sir we have a ador mig 600 welding it's igbt burn frequently, so I cheek this machine igbt input DC series with a indutor coil and a 1ph bridge + ,- only connection with coils it's damage it may be course of igbt burn ?

    aslaam brother, sukraan for the indepth teaching of Why IGBT keeps on popping, am working on a cooktek induction single hob, fuse keep on popping when I replace it and it has 4 inline IGBT 's, and I was thinking before I put in the new ones, reasoning to myself why and your video just made it clear the reason why it keeps on burning out because of the coil or maybe something els, can you give another explanation on it kanalah.

    snubber circuits need replacing

      in resonant circuit, most of time there is not snubber circuit. because in induction cooker the resonant technique is used
      snubber is in fluback topology

      may that is not that igbt but it it named by fake marking
      sometimes quality failed components are supplied
      always try to purchase from some reliable source
