Meeting celebs is so weird. I catered at the Kennedy Center Honors and was a waitress at Glenn Close's table. She was drunk AF, yelling and ranting about something (Meryl Streep was being honored that night...I'm guessing that may have had something to do with it). We have to clear plates all at the same time, and when I asked to take her plate, she gave me this death stare that she uses in her films, which made me take a gander that playing Cruella and unhinged, cruel women is not that big of a stretch for her. The funny part was that her husband at the time was fully ASLEEP right next to her, as though this meltdown she was having was any old Tuesday. I'm not sorry that she doesn't have an Oscar lol. She threw her dirty cutlery at me and luckily it didn't hit my face, but she got sauce o my face and in my hair when the cutlery bounced off the plates and then hit the floor. Who gets a nom or wins an Oscar has very little to do with an actor's performance and everything to do with a dozen other trivial factors, primarily who's in that actor's corner and how they campaign. I wouldn't put so much stock in that system. Oscars pretty much go to the highest bidder at this point.
haute03 Like I said, I know that the Oscars is about anything BUT film, but that doesn’t make me any less angry about the fact that Collette was ignored. Lynn Bowers She is so wonderful in The Sixth Sense. Her frustration reads solely as the results of her deep love for her troubled son, you’re right, a lesser actor would have made her seem unsympathetic.

She's so versatile, almost so versatile that few people realize she's the same actress from one film to another. That car scene in Six Sense is so powerful. The United States Of Tara, although faced writing problems in later seasons, highlighted how much of a creative chameleon she is
I feel like people who can't recognize her in different roles either didn't really know what she looked like in the first place or have face blindness. Her versatility comes from her acting, not from cosmetic changes (hair, makeup, prosthetics, costumes, etc.) I find her actual face very recognizable.

Little Miss Sunshine. It's her best role. She nails it down as an optimistic Mother trying to hold her family together during tough times. Even taking her suicidal Brother in and not sugarcoating the situation to her kids. I loved the speech she gave when she stopped the family from trying to stop Olive from performing. It's the speech only a Mother can give.
I think Toni Collette is similar to Tilda Swinton in the regards that they might pop up in movies of any genre both in lead or supporting roles, while Tilda has a certain niche about her that she uses to her full potential. Toni Collette goes for the exact opposite.
I mean a better comparison of Toni Colette's acting would be to Meryl Streep. Toni's acting is more similar to Meryl Streep than it is to Tilda Swinton.
Yeah, I don't get the allure of Tilda Swinton, she was a good corpse in Grand Budapest. She does this quirky that is about as quirky as reusable grocery bag.
@@Gee-xb7rt Tilda is great in my opinion but she uses what she has to her full potential and that is her face. She is also willing to do any type of role as she goes after interesting projects with interesting film makers as opposed to juicy roles.

It helps that the movie is also really, really good. I don't scare easily from movies, but I was genuinely scared to turn off my light the night after watching that. This is obviously in no small part due to Collete's performance, though.
I’m so mad still that she was robbed of at least a best actress nod for her work in hereditary. It was so amazing, I could feel every second of her performance.
But that's not even true, she's been Irish, Scottish, German and French. We've also seen her be gritty characters in films like The Shipping News and Little Fish and y'know Bob Dylan. This is not even mentioning what she did in the art piece Manifesto where she plays 13 different characters including a ballet mistress and a homeless man.

I was just going to say this. I grew up with a sister that drove me crazy and our relationship was emotionally taxing until recently. She portrayed those feelings of love and obligation and resentment so freaking well. Such an underrated film.
@@florencelove1895 absolutely agree, underrated terribly...And Cameron Diaz looks much better in scenes with Toni, I love her in this film because of Toni, who makes everyone look good.
great video. love this as a new theme: deserving actresses who haven’t won an an oscar. love all the work you highlighted here and would add her performance in about a boy was superb. to be the suicidal woman in a comedy and make us believe completely that she wanted to die but work within the comedic frame work and never detract from her character was masterful.
It’s an Aussie classic. You ask Aussies what top five Aussie films they’d recommend, and Muriel’s Wedding is always in there. Along with The Castle, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Strictly Ballroom, and maybe Looking for Alibrandi or Rabbit Proof Fence. The first three I mentioned are always in that top five, the last ones are where the debate starts.
I avoided Muriel's Wedding because I don't like Abba and had the impression it was a cheesy, local "Mamma Mia"-type film. I eventually watched it and let's just say "Mamma Mia" it aint!!! It blew my socks off. Great movie
Toni Collette was a household name for me growing up. Muriel’s Wedding was one of my sister’s favourite movie and I still remember her performance in About a Boy
I’d never seen a Toni Collette film till I watched Hereditary, Unbelievable and Knives Out all last year and I feel in love with her more after each viewing. (After this video, I now realize I’d seen her in the Sixth Sense.) I also saw Little Miss Sunshine for the first time last month and was equally smitten.
Please see Muriel's Wedding. It's great. The actress who plays the mother is also heartbreakingly great & Rachel Griffiths(from Six Feet Under) is also fantastic in it.
DHGlee2013 yes big time it’s unforgivable and the Oscars dig a deeper grave for themselves when they did it again to lupita the very next year unbearable
Even though I loved Muriel's Wedding I didn't realize Toni Collette was Australian. She was so impactful to me in The Sixth Sense, I cry at that car scene every time. A true icon.
I still do not get how the academy could look at what she did in Hereditary and not go "Oh, that's the winner this year" because she was on a whole other level with that movie. She's just one of those sure bets who you know will be good no matter what she's in.
Lee GaryB it comes from the older white male voters who still view horror as a popcorn jump scare genre they’ll nominate horror films that either aren’t seen as stereotypical horror films (the silence of the lambs, get out, black swan) or horror films that upon released are too culturally impactful that it’s hard to ignore or snub them (the exorcist, jaws, the sixth sense) that’s why diversity in voting at the academy is important
Muriel's Wedding is one of my favourite films, and when I rented it from Blockbuster Video, I watched it three times before returning it to the store. Thank you so much for all your videos. You NEVER disappoint. 😘
The Hours is one of my favorite roles of hers. It’s quintessential Toni. She’s in one scene only but the way she manages to patiently peel back her character’s perky facade to unveil listless terror is a true masterclass. Too bad the producers were too busy deciding which of the three leads to fraud into Supporting category, to give Colette a chance at a nomination.
I loved her in the hours, even though her role was very small and she was up against Kidman, Moore, and Streep she caught my attention every second she was on screen. As an aussie to see her in so many movies just makes me feel so proud, she is so unbelievably talented. Love Toni
I love Toni Collette in everything I've seen her in. Besides Hereditary, Little Miss Sunshine will always be my favorite ensemble cast. I shrieked when you pointed out how perfectly she can contribute to a scene without being the focus -- an ability far too often overlooked
I’m late but there’s a scene early on that’s a complete ensemble where they’re fighting about going to California and she stomps off to the kitchen to get everyone popsicles. She has one line but steals the scene. It’s glorious.
I discovered her in " In her shoes " and I have been watching with attention ever since. I'm glad that she is getting more recognition because she really shines when she is given a chance.
The fact that she's a subject for an entire video made my.entire day. She's so massively underrated!!!! My top 3 favorites along with Meryl and Amy Adams
She's amazingly versatile and is just now starting to get the recognition she deserves. The same goes for Essie Davis, who was unrecognizable between The Babadook and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.
Toni is one of only a handful of non-American actors who actually nails the American accent. I've watched a few of her films (most recent being Knives Out) & admire her talent, but before this video, I was convinced she was American.
I'm so glad that people finally start to really acknowledge her work!! I love all her roles but I think Little Miss Sunshine will always be my favourite!
I'm here after watching miss you already. Such a phenomenal actress. Watching the movie I missed my lost one so much, and it brought back beautiful memories with her... Thank you.
Thank you so much for putting a spotlight on an incredibly underrated actress. I recently rewatched Muriels Wedding, the amount of pathos and humilty and just genuine humanity she brought that character and being a breakout role, is nothing short of incredible. She is an actress that repeats the same feat time and again.
Thanks for doing this. Toni has been soo overlooked for soon long. She's one of the few actresses that completely disappears into her role and makes the entire scene believable. Way underrated and underappreciated for far too long.
I absolutely fell in love with her in Velvet Goldmine. It was the perfect part for her, she displays an age range of 20 years, her character has a flexible accent which changes with her circumstances and sometimes mood, she says one thing and means another. No one could have done that like her.
I remember In Her Shoes being the first film I thought, "Wow, this is a great actress, what else has she done?" And from there I realized she'd been in so many great films up to that point and beyond. Also, Unbelievable is not to be missed.
Wow, really? It’s weird to see people say that, as an Aussie. She’s very much beloved here, and Muriel’s Wedding comes up in all of the “best Aussie films of all time” lists. Cosi (pronounced coz-ee, meaning swimming costume usually, not Coe-see) is also a really wonderful Aussie film.
mye namee yeah, I’m pretty sure Rachel Griffiths is in it- I always do think of Toni and Rachel together, and they do work really well with each other as actresses.
@@katherinemorelle7115 It's Coh - see. As in, Cosi fan tutte (the opera they are trying to stage). Nothing to do with swimmers. Not trying to bust your nads, but I thought one correction could, perhaps, stand another. I'm a Skippy, have seen both film and play. The film cast is superb, isn't it? I thought Toni's version of Throw Your Arms Around Me was absolutely beautiful :-)
I love Toni Collette. I’m also an Aussie and yes we do love her - how could we not? Thank you for highlighting her brilliance in your typically brilliant, insightful manners, BKR. Impossible to pick a favourite but her performance and multiple characterisations in United States of Tara are extraordinary.
I'm going to watch this with my daughter as people are beginning to attempt addressing with more acuity, the destigmatization surrounding mental illness. Such an important topic and I know TC will hit it home, she is great. I hope the host showcases more women in films portraying mental illness, as it (mental illness) is often misused as a female film troupe I am learning, thanks to this channel.
She can do anything. But in each film, it is never about showing off her skills. It always feels like she was the only possible choice and , more importantly, the obvious one. Incredible. Thanks for the video
I remember dragging some friends to see Muriel's Wedding in the theater as a teen. They had no idea what we were seeing, and neither did I really, but I have always loved Toni from that day on.
Thank you for this! I've been a fan of Toni since " Muriel's Wedding" and "Emma". I find it so irritating that people I know never seem to know who she is. Of course people who do know her know what an amazing actress she is, she gets offered great roles, and probably doesn't get recognized and pestered a lot , so maybe she's not complaining.
I fell in love with Toni when I first encountered her in the 6th Sense and it still amazes me that she has not won an academy award. I think United States of Tara sort of went off the rails in the third season but she was amazing in every single moment she was onscreen. I can't think of another actress with her versatility - or another actress as supremely talented yet so incredibly modest.
All you need to know about the Oscars is that Emma Stone and Renee Zellweger were won for best actress while singing and dancing which neither of them could do and Toni Collette was only nominated once. The Oscars is a popularity contest and marketing opportunity. Good actors just want to work and inhabit different characters, and TC definitely does that! Love her!
Yesssss. Exactly what I needed. Thank you, and thanks Toni for the choices she has made in movies. I'm still sore she was not nominated for an Oscar for Hereditary. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
This is such a good video. Thank you. I didn't know who Toni Collette was until Dan on SJU/Fandom Entertainment started saying "An Oscar for Toni" around the time Hereditary came out. Then I saw Knives Out and thought "Oh that's Toni Collette." THEN I watched Hereditary and was completely blown away by her performance. I saw her in Emma a few weeks ago, and I actually watched The Way Way Back last night and was completely surprised that she was in it. And I didn't know she was in Little Miss Sunshine (a movie that's been on my need-to-watch list for a while) until this video. This is all to say that I'm very glad I know who she is now and I had I no idea it was the same actress in all these films - which only proves your point further.
I love your Meryl Streep video, so I'm glad you did another one where you spotlight an actress and look into their career. Your videos are great and so informative!
I love her. I first became aware of Toni Colette in the mid 00's when I suddenly realized that Bruce Willis's wife from The Sixth Sense, the kooky hippie mom from About a Boy, and the glamorous 1950's lady from The Hours were all played by the same person, and that completely blew my mind. Been a fan ever since.
Your videos never fail to interest and educate me. I saw Knives Out, and (unknowingly) saw Velvet Buzzsaw, and didn't even realize that Toni was in both movies. What a true chameleon.
So excited you’re doing a piece on Toni! I recently rewatched United States of Tara a second time, once again frustrated that the show was canceled too soon.

I’m so excited someone else noticed Toni! She’s one of my favorite actresses! Thank you for this. United States of Tara is one of my all-time favorite shows. I wish it could have continued beyond three seasons.

Yes is gave me a migraine headache!! She was phenomenal!!
I got chills during the dinner scene. It was so good. Even actor who played her son was staring at her like 🥺
The wail she let out after finding out that her daughter was dead will always haunts me
It helps that the movie is also really, really good. I don't scare easily from movies, but I was genuinely scared to turn off my light the night after watching that. This is obviously in no small part due to Collete's performance, though.
Honestly that movie was so horrible and haunts me to this day. Her performance was just so heartbreaking.
I’m so mad still that she was robbed of at least a best actress nod for her work in hereditary. It was so amazing, I could feel every second of her performance.
“While Cate Blanchett has been standard American, New England, British and sexy” 😂😂😂 NO LIES
But she is. She is a goddess. She is criminally good. Like Toni Collette is criminally good and underrated.
@@sophiemchugh1539 gonna be honest, this line was mostly a set up for a joke to call her hot? i very much like and respect cate's versatility and loved manifesto!
@@bkrewind oh we know... but it was so on point! that's the thing haha, thanks by the way
i cackled 😂
I dunno if I have a favorite actor, but I know if Collette is in it, I'm gonna watch. She's a joy.
I honestly love her in "In her shoes." That role would have just been a cliché for a lesser actress. She stole the whole movie for me.
I was just going to say this. I grew up with a sister that drove me crazy and our relationship was emotionally taxing until recently. She portrayed those feelings of love and obligation and resentment so freaking well. Such an underrated film.
So good!
Such a great film. Wish more people knew it
Yes! That movie is so spot on, and with what emotional abuse from a step parent looks like.
@@florencelove1895 absolutely agree, underrated terribly...And Cameron Diaz looks much better in scenes with Toni, I love her in this film because of Toni, who makes everyone look good.
I love her. She is one of the actors that stays with you once you see them for the first time, like Laura Dern
"There's also... Harvey Weinstein"
*proceeds to show his picture burning in Hell's fire* 😂
As expected
Deservedly.
Missed that. So funny
Deserves an award in editing just for that
ぼじん yup
great video. love this as a new theme: deserving actresses who haven’t won an an oscar. love all the work you highlighted here and would add her performance in about a boy was superb. to be the suicidal woman in a comedy and make us believe completely that she wanted to die but work within the comedic frame work and never detract from her character was masterful.
I am SO HAPPY you talked about Muriel's Wedding! Such an overlooked masterpiece. You've inspired me to make a video about it, thank you!
The scenes with the mum break my heart in that film.
@@katherinemorelle7115 What was the one with the shark and the mother who wanted her life be like the Sound ofMusic?
I avoided Muriel's Wedding because I don't like Abba and had the impression it was a cheesy, local "Mamma Mia"-type film. I eventually watched it and let's just say "Mamma Mia" it aint!!! It blew my socks off. Great movie
@@katherinemorelle7115 Priscilla!!!!
Perhaps you also saw her in The Hours and About a Boy without realising it?
If you haven’t seen it yet, I really do recommend Muriel’s Wedding. It’s an Aussie classic for a reason.
Please see Muriel's Wedding. It's great. The actress who plays the mother is also heartbreakingly great & Rachel Griffiths(from Six Feet Under) is also fantastic in it.
Thanks for the recommendation! Now I def will
@Jeremy Diaz My favorite thing about "Knives Out" was her.
I LOVE Toni. United States of Tara is one of my all-time favorite shows. She was absolutely incredible and really transformed into each of the alters.
Muriel, In her Shoes and this are her career highlights for me. She was great in those.
Toni was snubbed big time for Hereditary.
I'd say Charlize Theron also has that quality. They were both in fast and furious btw, which is telling.
Kevin 5012 yup
Muriel's Wedding is one of my favourite films, and when I rented it from Blockbuster Video, I watched it three times before returning it to the store. Thank you so much for all your videos. You NEVER disappoint. 😘
The Hours is one of my favorite roles of hers. It’s quintessential Toni. She’s in one scene only but the way she manages to patiently peel back her character’s perky facade to unveil listless terror is a true masterclass. Too bad the producers were too busy deciding which of the three leads to fraud into Supporting category, to give Colette a chance at a nomination.
Hell yeah. The Hours was such an ensemble film, great casting in every timeline. Colette, and Richardson, and Janney were superb.
I forgot she was in The Hours! How?? There's a scene where she and Julianne Moore kiss how did I forget that
She deserved to be nominated.
That was an incredible role.
SO TRUE!!!
I loved her in the hours, even though her role was very small and she was up against Kidman, Moore, and Streep she caught my attention every second she was on screen. As an aussie to see her in so many movies just makes me feel so proud, she is so unbelievably talented. Love Toni
"...and sexy." I felt that very deeply.
same
LOL at that moment. Yes, sexy is one of the accents that Cate has mastered.
YES. So happy to see Toni on this channel. She’s brilliant and elusive. Sixth Sense is a tear jerker because of her.
Living definition of a successful character actress. Her career’s been consistent for decades now.
She's amazingly versatile and is just now starting to get the recognition she deserves. The same goes for Essie Davis, who was unrecognizable between The Babadook and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.
I fell in love with her character in "Cosi", one of my favorite films.
Toni Collette is my favorite actress and you PERFECTLY explained why. She is iconic and deserves way more recognition!
This video is so topical for me because I literally JUST found out she's Australian
Saphire Wallis same. I thought she was British
She is very much a household name in Australia, we adore her here ☺️
I'll never recover from Toni's wailing at THAT scene from 'Hereditary'. You know the one, the one where she's not actually on screen...
"CHARLIE!!!!!"
This timing to is too perfect. I just finished rewatching "US of Tara" last night. She is a treasure!
@@penelopejoann while its HILARIOUS! It's very gimmicky and honestly has zero to do with real mental illness.
She can do anything. But in each film, it is never about showing off her skills. It always feels like she was the only possible choice and , more importantly, the obvious one. Incredible. Thanks for the video
She is the most impressive actor. Sometimes the best are the most unnoticed.
Toni and I grew up in the same town. I love her in Murial's Wedding. Every working class Aussie girl relates.
I'm a youngin' so my first Toni Collette movie was Connie and Carla back in '05. She's been one of my favorite actresses ever since.
She has the best of both worlds, privacy, and a great acting career. She is also an awesome person. I respect her deeply.
I have the biggest crush on Toni. I'm so glad to see this. She deserves so much more recognition
My favorites roles of her is still "Muriel's wedding" and in "The hours", where she plays only for minutes, but you can never forget her.
renata teofilo Oh my god! Yes! She was in The Hours for 3 minutes and had me crying, she stole that scene!
Sixth Sense?
Thank you for making this 🙏❤️
Muriel's wedding is one of my favourite films ever, she's amazing in it!
Its the only movie that can make me cry every time. Ever
Her performance in Hereditary was LITERALLY the best lead actress performance of 2018. Oscar or not.
I just watched Little Miss Sunshine for the millionth time last night. I love her so much. So much talent and personality. My favorite forever!!!
Love Little Miss Sunshine.
Connie and Carla is deeply underrated and I’m glad it was included here.
I love Toni! I’m so glad you spotlighted her!
"Oh woe, how will I stave off the madness of lockdown for another day?"
*sees this in my subscriptions feed*
"Yep, that'll do it."
She wasn't Bruce's wife
@@HAL-vm3wn My bad, I meant the kid's mom. Been a while since I saw that one.
Toni is a Master at her craft. There are very few people like her
I need a "mom" battle between Toni Collete and Jessica Lange. In this scene they just unleash holy hell on each-other in all of their glory.
I fell in love with Toni after seeing Muriel’s Wedding. She has never been a disappointment.
The Waterloo scene in Muriel's Wedding might just be my favourite moment in any film periodt.
OMG thank you for this video. I was just thinking last week that she didn't have enough recognition. I was completely amazed by her in knives out. She's simply one of the bests
I’m so excited someone else noticed Toni! She’s one of my favorite actresses! Thank you for this.
United States of Tara is one of my all-time favorite shows. I wish it could have continued beyond three seasons.
Finally another video!!! this was awesome!! but I really need another one about the Best Actress Winners
I kinda discovered her on "Hereditary" and her performance blew me away. Thanks for this video that reminded me that I shouldn't be sleeping on her work.
so happy you did a video on Toni, she captures your attention no matter what! I watched Little Miss Sunshine in theaters & have been in love ever since !!!!
Love this actress, such great analysis, there really isnt enough recognition. I guess my favourite roles of hers would be Muriels Wedding, Sixth Sense and Hereditary. Be great to see Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchetts careers have an overview like this. Thankyou for the brilliant content as always.
Every time you post a video, I say to myself, "How can you top this!?" And every time you top yourself. Thank you for being you! Amazed!
I really love her in Velvet Goldmine. She steals every scene she's in.
Yeah her and jonathan rhys meyers played off each other well.
That was my intro to her
Agreed
her performance in The Hours is often overlooked and a complete show-stealer. she has only one scene but conveys an entire arc breathlessly
14:17 That was perfect! I love you so so much! Thank you.
Kudos for your piece showcasing one of my favorite actors! Muriel's Wedding will always be one of my favorite Toni Collette movies. Not only is it a great movie, but as you pointed out, it's a perfect vehicle to showcase her extraordinary talents
love her in everything, and would probably argue her most underrated performance is in Japanese Story. She's riveting (of course).
You should make one of these for Kate Winslet. I feel like, similar to Toni (my ride or die :), she takes on so many diverse roles and accents, i've always really admired her. She had something like 7 nominations before she won an Oscar!
Wow! So unexpected! I love her so much, and i love you so much; i clicked right away. Good job!
Thank you for this beautiful essay about Toni Collette, love it she absolutely deserves the admiration
But I would also like to recognise this moment at 14:18 for being absolute FIRE
