Which main character do you prefer? What would you say is the biggest difference between Parts 1 and 2? Are they actually the same?

Denji is great but I absolutely adore Asa's character. She's much easier to relate to and feels incredibly realistic as a person. Denji always felt a bit cartoonish to me, wich works well when you're introducing an audience to a new world. Starting with a relatively simple person with very simple goals is a good way to start a story.
What Asa brings is a more complex internal story with a character with less easily defineable goals.

    • @zemox2534

@Af Kijkuit How is Denji being cartoonist a bad thing? Also the guy is very relatable or did you miss his entire arc?

    • @afkijkuit4057
      @afkijkuit4057 Год назад +38

@@zemox2534 It's not a bad thing, I explained it in my comment. Asa is generally more relateable because her struggles and traumas are a lot more recognizeable. The point of Denji's character is that he starts out barely human, he's basically a dog chasing after the most basic desires because he had literally nothing. His arc is him growing and learning to be human by exploring what he really wants of his life. It's a very interesting and engaging story but it isn't really meant to be that relateable. It's an exploration of what would happen if someone had to learn to be human. If Denji was less cartoonish and simple in part 1 this would not work as well.
Asa doesn't start at rock bottom, she had parents, later a pet and a relatively normal life. But she got everything taken away from her. Slowly losing everything you have is a lot more relateable than starting with nothing and then slowly being built up. We don't really know what her arcs will really be since we're only like 25 chapters in, but so far her character is far more complicated than Denji was ~25 chapters in.

IMO not keeping Denji as the MC was one of the biggest mistakes Fujimoto ever did in CSM. Asa simply is not even close to as good a character as Denji ever will be. I really could care less for her.. I care more about characters like Himeno, who were in the manga for one volume..

I think the story will become both Denji's and Asa's. Denji has a lot of stuff to do still, from finding the resurrected blood devil to raising Nayuta. But in order for it to be both their stories, Fujimoto needs to give Asa breathing room so Denji doesn't overshadow her. I think that is why we've been focused on Asa so heavily in part 2, but I think eventually they'll meet in the middle and grow together if that makes sense.

Honestly it comes off as a weird Duo protagonist setup. Denji's story still has a bit to go, he always wanted a intimate relationship but instead has been effectively... stuck. He has to take care of Nayuta and being a student and we see shown in the story that he only really does Chainsaw Man things to get recognition and develop relationships. Along comes Asa, a misanthropic character whos personality is a weird mirroring of Denji. A lot of what she wants to be is effectively what Denji is.
I'm not entirely sure where the story is going, but the entire duration of Chainsaw Man Part 2 has been Contrasting Denji and Asa. Personality's, Desires and the people who are manipulating and using them.
In the end I feel like Asa is currently the main character because shes playing catch up to our relationship with Denji, but this over all seems like a Duo protagonist story.

Actually I feel like Fujimoto is using Asa's perspective to put some of Denji's flaws more to the forefront, specifically the ones Denji doesn't realize, the ones relating more to him as Chainsaw Man than as Denji
I personally think we're going to see Denji have an arc more related to responsibility with his strength, his ethics, and him learning to become a hero for less selfish reasons
I partially think that due to how, so far, whenever we see Denji go Chainsaw, he's not really portrayed as a hero, if anything he's almost portrayed like a monster, whether it being how Fujimoto displays the casualties from Denji choosing to save a cat over the student and group of elders, him being more focused on getting with a girl when fighting Justice Devil Yuko, and the panel where he kills Yuko, where we only see his shadow and a decapitated and confused Yuko who has been killed by her idol, which is honestly kinda scary
I think by showing us Asa's perspective, the perspective of someone who doesn't like Chainsaw Man, those flaws of Denji's are brought more to the forefront

    • @giornogiovanna8476
      @giornogiovanna8476 Год назад +28

Oh and I forgot to mention, there's still 2 glaring problems that has gone unresolved relating to his arc in part 1, and those are his emotional dependence, and him not understanding love
Like Denji is still mentally effected by Makima's manipulation, since she caused him to become emotional dependent on her, since she made sure to always be the person who helps Denji feel happier, so that he replied on her, allowing her to break him when she took everything else away and reveal her true feelings
In part 2, that empty hole Makima left him really seems to be his motivation, since now it seems that he's not really happy, and he needs attention to feel better, whether that be his screaming fans as Chainsaw, or the idea of a girlfriend to comfort him and spend time with, and the idea of being without either would just leave him in a depressive state to the point of quitting
And when it comes to love, I think this is an arc he shares with Asa, cuz they both thought they liked each other and were possibly in love after the short time they spent at the aquarium, but in reality neither of them understand the idea of it
I'd argue that there has only been one women in the series so far that we know without a doubt Denji loved in some way, and while it might sound weird to some people I'd say it's Power, because she's one of the only people who's deaths caused Denji to cry, the others off the top of my head being Aki and Pochita who Denji also loved, and I think the scenes where Denji bathed with Power and drank he blood actually lend to this, because with those he said it didn't feel naughty, which I think can be interpreted as Denji not feeling that what he was doing with her was wrong, and on top of this, his contract with Power is what gave him the motivation to get back up, because he didn't want to live anymore because of Power's death
The other women that he felt attraction to in part 1 were usually him being horny and/or being manipulated (Reze is a weird case where she falls under both, but also neither cuz he seemed to like spending time with her), and with Asa he didn't get to form a strong enough connection to her, and he seemed to be more into the idea of her than anything
And Asa doesn't understand love in the slightest, since she acts like she thinks any male who talks to her and agrees with her for more than 3 seconds has a crush on her
So I think that part 2 will probably be a dual arc following both of them dealing with a similar struggle and possibly falling for each other for real before being confronted with the fact that they might have to fight to the death because of the demons that live inside themselves (literally)

The creature that killed Yuko wasn’t Denji as he’s shown sleeping a few panels right before that scene. This is also apparent in the creature itself as Denji has a leaner body build, meanwhile the creature’s arm that we got to see was noticably burlier.
My personal theory is that it might be Pochita’s discarded body. Remember when he got shot into orbit? He launched his heart back to earth, but his old body was just left there. Perhaps someone managed to retrieve it and is using it as a puppet.

Unlike Jojo's, which was used as the comparative, the title of the story is still Chainsawman which refers to Denji rather than a different joestars. We aren't following a new adventure so much as seeing the world through new eyes. Why that is I am uncertain at this point. For example, the title of jojo even tho they switch mc after each part of the series, they are still connected to each other being joestar and every character has the same jo pronouncing their names. Another example is Naruto. Imagine Naruto finising his story then Boruto takes the place as the new mc but the title is still Naruto then it wouldn't make sense and for another example, One peice can have so many different main characters without talking away the purpose of the title

I think so as well. Asa is like an outside perspective to observe all of the flaws and weaknesses of Denji himself, and see where he will still need to grow. I feel like, bc they are such mirrored characters, Denji and Asa will grow together as friends and come to understand both friendship and love. The fact that Asa seems to be similar to Power to Denji is a really sweet detail, and I just love Asa's character in general. She has a much stronger sense of right vs wrong compared to Denji, and actually grapples with the meaning of justice. If we see the story from Denji's pov, we would miss that exploration in the world of the manga.

I think she parallels denji quite well, and denji's relationship with Nayuta might be better explored as a subplot to Asa's main plot. Although, I feel Asa's story due to her parallels is inherently linked with Denji's ongoing mission for love. I just think both denji and Asa are journeying to clear up their confusion and realise the difference between quantity and quality of love. Equally, i feel Asa's introspective nature is much more fitting for the high-school setting. Denji's simple nature fit the mystery of public safety, but high school definitely doesn't have that same level and because of that Asa can be more introspective.

Eh... I don't really know what to think about the whole thing. I like Asa's character, but I also really like Denji. I'm not quite so sure why Fujimoto decided to try and make things fresh by focusing on a new character instead of giving Denji a new challenge like you said. I think there is still a lot that could be done with his character. His past is still somewhat a mystery as we still don't know a lot about the specific details of what happened before he started working for the yakuza. He now is a guardian to a young girl, which should change his views about life and himself significantly. There's still an air of mystery as to what exactly pochita is (why does the chainsaw devil have the ability to erase devils/concepts from existence). Denji is more or less right back at square one since he lost everything. I'm hoping as this arc unfolds it becomes Denji and Asa's story equally. But, you can never predict what Fujimoto is going to do next. It's also hard for me to give a real solid opinion on the character switch as we are still watching this arc unfold.

So while Asa is now a major player and Denji isn’t always the main focus, that doesn’t mean he’s not still going through character changes and is still one of if not the main character.

Its a character that the female audience can relate to on the same level that (at least I from my subjective view) have related to Denji, like really, when I first read CSM I felt soo alike as Denji its insane. Trying to put myself in the shoes of a girl, I can totally see the same dinamic whit Asa and them

I think this part is much more focused on relationships and human connection. That is something that Part 1 also touched on but it was more subtly told then and had different ways of approaching it. Part 1 showed how human connection is sought after and the ways it impacts others, while part 2 seems to approach it more from a place of healing through connection rather than it being a focus of desire. Denji and Asa both have parallels in their characters, both story wise and arc wise, but they are very distinct from one another. Its that parallel though that may allow them to connect with one another and tackle the things they couldn't alone.

Chainsaw Man is ultimately about growing from past traumatic experiences. We're currently seeing this from Asa and we've already seen the traumatic experiences Denji goes through. If Fujimoto continues after part 2 into a new part. I could see him focusing again on the idea of trauma and growing. I doubt we'd see the new host of the blood devil, as thats not necessarily related to Asa. Fujimoto does not randomly drop a character into the spotlight if they are not related to the main story. The character adds something to the main story and this means that if the blood devil's return is to happen, it'd mean that this character would be important to Asa. Asa is the focus of chapter two. She's in the same place as Denji now, she has a target on her back. She is not safe from the her own weapon devils. Her primal fear devils will chase her down, Asa has to grow and get a sense of morales and ethics in order to truly conquer these devils.

  • @mockingbird4346
    @mockingbird4346 Год назад +2

    There are some gaps here
First of all Denji's character arc is far from complete, even in part one he only realizes one part of what it is he's supposed to mature and realize. He begins to understand that what he wanted was genuine relationships (We see this even in the early parts of the series, when he describes his perfect life to Pochita he describes relaxing and eating good food with a girl and Pochita, and playing video games with her. That's hardly a connection exclusively about sex.) but losing Aki and Power makes him shut in that desire and still focus on "wanting to have sex." He realized the other half of that, that those relationships need to be equal give and take, not barking for every woman that will treat him nicely.
Second of all, Denji isn't replaced as the main character, Asa has been getting more focus but the protagonist of our story in a literary sense is still very much Denji. Even when we ourselves aren't following him, we're still reminded that he's an inevitable part of the story being the center of it all through things like the news coverage of him.
Third of all, Denji and Asa are actively being set up to play into each other more and more, even mirroring each other's flaws and insecurities. Denji idiotically throws himself at every opportunity for sex in the hopes of developing those relationships he wants. Asa desperately pines for the validation of literally everyone around her while being too prideful and immature to admit that validation and affection are what she desires. I'm not one to say the two will end up in a relationship, I don't think they need to in order to have a strong narrative together, but they will definitely impact each other and how they go about seeking the things they actually want.

Denji as a character doesn't have an end really, is more of a writing choice of the author, he's still usable for many more arcs since there's not really limits for writing with the same character. It's pure choice of writing, it isn't needed or necessary for a great writing experience. And one more thing, i would love if you could make more examples rather than just using jjba as a comparison, since there's probably more animes/mangas that could make an example out of them.

So in essence, part 2 kinda follows the dynamic that Denji and Makima had in part 1, but from Makima's perspective if that makes sense. ( Just that in this case, Makima has no rizz )
And while this is Asa's story, Denji's still at the center of it all and we're still getting progression for him as well, so I'm just hype for whatever comes next

Asa and Denji are two sides of a character with no purpose they both don’t have goals of there own as they both serve others (Denji says he’s saving up to send nayuta to college) it’s an interesting push and pull which keeps denji as a main focus, but not the sole character jn tbe spotlight

Denji still has a lot to do and figure out so stopping for us on him is not smart in my opinion. I think he still needs to go on a journey to see what he really wants and what will make him happy, if he just kicked Denji completely out of the main character role I think that’d be a mistake. For me it’s more like setting up asa so that they can become something like a team in later parts

I like how it seems Asa and Yoru are going to learn to get along and perhaps form a deeper emotional bond similarly to Denji and Pochita.
Yoru right now is nowhere near as strong as she used to be and is at her most vulnerable and has to rely on all the misfortune Asa feels to create powerful weapons to survive these new and old foes.
But because of this, I think she’ll definitely need Denji to stop her from spiraling into despair and have someone who can show how happy you can still be in spite of whatever circumstances she’ll face.
I hope by the end of part 2, Asa learns how to be happy with herself and doesn’t need Denji anymore or really anyone but still hangs out with people and interacts with Society.
I wonder if Denji might go through something similar and when he finds the blood devil he’ll accept that it’ll never quite be power ever again, no matter how hard he tries to turn into her.
That incarceration of the blood Devil will be who they want to be and act how they want to act, like you can’t just forcibly control someone into your ideal interpretation of them.
This can undoubtedly be a lesson for Nayuta as well, and I wish she learns this from Denji similarly to how Shigeo learns from Reigan to not use your powers on others.
A lot of this stuff probably might not happen because you never know what Fujimoto is thinking. With that in mind ima just throw a big enough net and surely one theory will land.
Check in the replies to see my theory on How Denji will become a Terrorist!

      @jackaboynaylor9273 Год назад +7

Denji needs to inevitably become stronger to overcome later conflicts and besides him learning how to use his powers in creative ways, he’s likely to grow even weaker from humanity since Nayuta convinced Denji that he could be way more loved as chainsaw man rather as Denji.
Something else I need to elaborate is how it has been foreshadowed that a big war is going to happen in the future even as far back as ch 6 with the bigwigs at public safety saying that
“The Soviet war hawks are getting louder over the American matter. We’re also hearing rumors that they’re using devils for military purposes. We can only pray that the devils remain Japan’s enemies.”
And later in ch 73 we learn that this war is going to involve countries attempting to steal parts of the Gun devil from each other, with Makima again saying “I’m sure it will be a kind of war”
All of this suggests that a war will happen in the future, and guess who Denji is getting involved with? Asa the host of the war devil.
Now Yoru wants to regain her strength to fight chainsaw man and a great way to do that is to gain the flesh of extremely strong devils, say like the Gun devil, so I see that Yoru would take advantage of Denji whose identity is definitely going to be revealed to Asa to gain pieces of the gun to fight chainsaw man with Denji getting caught helping her.
How I think this’ll happen is Yoru will tell Denji to look for devils who have eaten pieces of the gun devil kill them and bring the pieces to her, so she can keep them safe and countries using evil devils for military purposes and convinces or manipulate him to go and kill these devils.
You might be thinking “but how would she know that?” well we know the horsemen can remember things chainsaw man has erased from existence and some of the things we know he ate were the WW2 devil and the Nazi devil.
So, no one else remembers what happened in WW2, BUT it’s very likely devils were involved with the war since they’re all over the entire planet and countries made contracts/used devils to gain an advantage during the war?
Denji who used to work at public safety, could know or find out where these devils are being kept and go on a rampage massacring them while Yoru searches for where public safety keeps pieces of the gun.
After doing this, people would become much more afraid of chainsaw man like imagine this cool mysterious hero you love with unknown motives who killed the gun devil y know the devil that killed MILLIONS just randomly attacked a public safety HQ for no apparent reason and was spotted alongside some sketchy woman.
You’ll be scared as fuck! Like, what is this chainsaw guy going to do next?!?
Then the public would start to view him as a terrorist that causes chaotic mayhem, a lot like the original hero of hell chainsaw man. I also think his face will be caught on video or camera, so people would start to harass Denji and Nayuta to parallel Kenji and Nayuta.
I think this is a fascinating theory and could connect to other people like Yoshida and his mysterious organizations motives and would like to hear if you could add anything to it.

The whole video is fabricated out of nothing and stems from a lack of understanding that Denji's character and his story arc develops through Asa's narrative and her interactions with him. This highlights parallels and differences between them, which helps us gain a better understanding of Denji and see him from unexpected angles. This development is even better than if the manga was conveyed solely through Denji's point of view.

The themes, characters and plot are all continuations of what was set up in Part 1, but all of them are viewed through the lens of Asia’s perspective… even Denji’s evolution as a character is now being viewed from Asa’s perspective instead of from Denji himself. As a storyteller, this honestly creates a much more holistic exploration of everything that is Chainsaw Man and sets the series up to be one of the greatest masterpieces in manga storytelling in the same line as Berserk simply out of the willingness to explore every aspect of the story as fully as possible.

Asa is such a well written character and people saying that part 2 is boring is very annoying to hear. Fujimoto has always been a great character writer. Like the video says his short stories are a big example of that and even Fire Punch his 1st manga. CSM has always been character focused . Which most people dropping it didn't realize and was only there for the action.

Thank you. To clarify, my point is that Denji’s character arc prior to Part 2, as established in Part 1, was complete. Now he is in a new character arc.

I think MGS2 is another good frame of reference for stories that shifted perspective to a new character. One of the primary reasons the story was told from a perspective other than Snake's, is because viewing Snake from another character's perspective served to make him feel all the more heroic and legendary.
As for CSM, seeing Denji through the eyes of Asa, we see all of the bad and the good in full force, we already love him as a character from part 1 but to someone who doesn't actually know or understand him as a person, all the more childish and abrasive sides of him come to the forefront and she has no idea what to think. I'm sure this will be used as a vehicle to further develop both of them as characters as well as the possible romance between them.

He needed another protagonist to fill it with trauma and keeps taking everything away from the character again since he left Denji all screwed up

I think the main reason isn't as much narrative as it is personal - Fujimoto has always made shorter stories until now, so it's probably the area where he feels the most comfortable or where he has the most fun

And here you are being wrong. Fujimoto doesn't replaced protagonist, he just added another one to the mix. This is a story about both Asa and Denji. It is still a Chainsaw Man, and both characters are important to the story. Story and setting are still driven by the Chainsaw Man and Denji's actions. And later in the story Asa will make it's own significant mark on this world just as Denji did.

Denji hasn't even been replaced lol. There's a switch off in narration between him and Asa from time to time, but Denji is still protagonist while Asa serves as the deuteragonist of part 2.

I completely forgot that Asa was meant to be the Leading Protagonist of Part 2 of CSM but over time it feels like Denji has become someone more important And Once again Greatly told and as contrast to Asa mitaka. Both are well written,Goofy and Amazing Protagonists that I can't wait to see what else they have on store

I like how in part 2 we get to have a closer look to the persperctive of normal citizens before demons, how these monsters ruin lifes, families, etc literatly every day. Sure in part 1 Fujimoto approached us to it, but the main focus was denji's development and the devil hunter's horrible life
