- Hello again, dome and zome lovers! I apologize for the lengthy gap between videos. We have been working so hard here on a ton of projects and hope to have an update out for you soon as well as the full sauna build video. Thank you for your patience. There is so much amazing stuff in the works!

It feels a bit silly watching me make my first scripted video but I really wanted to try to distill some of the basic knowledge about domes and zomes that I wish I had when I started. I have been doing my best to update our blog with detailed articles on lots of topics like: The differences between domes and zomes, Cover materials for greenhouses and cabins, how to estimate a projects cost, and more!

Very nice video! We enjoyed the comfort of your support during building of our zome last year! Thanks for that! But i have to say als a german the beveled method is very satisfying even thoigh it tok a long time to build the pieces. I have really learned a lot under this process and the magic moment of assembling was worth it. Now it has been standing for 8 month and it is so solid, it soes not care about the storm we had last week at all. ❤

Outstanding video, and it answered a lot of my initial questions. Having been sold on domes for decades you brought up points that I never even thought of. Geodesic domes have been around for almost 100 years. They were moderately popular in the late 1960s to mid 1980s. Their popularity tapered off significantly and I haven't personally seen a new one built in 40 years. I have no doubt that some are getting built, but the point remains, there are good reasons that even people who built domes, turned against them after building and living in them. No major advance in technology or product availability has happened since the 80s that would justify their return to favor.
With all that said, they provide a delightful feeling from being inside one that has been built thoughtfully.
Have to say I disagree. On the building science and materials front, we have advanced like crazy in the last 4 decades. Also, people haven't stopped building domes. Maybe you don't need a dome home, but a space like we make - a small shed, greenhouse or sauna. But the fact remains that building domes as a residence has pretty much been perfected by folks like Natural Spaces Domes. Check out their system.
Zomes on the other hand are new on the scene and like I say in the video - provide some huge benefits over the classic geodome geometry.

I really like the shape/design/look of the 10' Zome! I'm considering 3 of them at different levels on my property with a huge carved stone fire pit in front for gatherings.

I was building a house on Talikud Island in the Philippines and it was a killer working in the heat and humidity. I came up with the idea of creating a structure out of trees so I have planted them up and I will return in maybe six months. The idea is to grow the trees and weave them and screw them together. The trees I have chosen are teak quick growing and durable. They are already about 10 feet tall. I am going to start a similar project on my land in Portugal where I hope to build a sort of invisible treehouse hotel.

I just want to comment on the customer service of Johnny. For the past few days I asked him a bunch of questions on the domes before I purchased plans. He responded quick and detailed even though I was just inquiring. Because of that I purchased the entire shop bundle. I only plan to build 1 (30 or 40ft) dome right now, but I wanted to support his business and get those plans just incase I decided against my original thought. Also those zomes are so cool. I can make the triangles at my leisure and whenever Im ready to build they'll be ready. No need to save thousands for a kit. I can prep it as I go along. Thank you Johnny and Trillium.
Wow! That is really generous of you. I really appreciate your support. I absolutely try my best to respond to everyone who reaches out, it ends up being quite a lot of time each day! Folks like you help me be able to actually take the time out of my day to really dive into peoples projects with them. We are testing a bunch of new cover types for the pre made zomes kits and there's no way I would have been able to afford the material costs for prototyping that kind of thing without the supplemental income the plans bring in. Planning my zome greenhouse

I'm planning on building a 30 ft Zome for my house. I live in SE Arizona. Except for monsoon season we get very little rain. That only lasts about a month in the summer. The real concern is the heat. It can be triple digits from June to September. My idea is to put insulation board on the outside of the shell and then stucco over that to keep the heat away from the shell. Do you know if thats been tried before?
It and arid climate like that I think it could work! Lime plaster would be a good choice. You can build with 2x6 for that plan and I have even more ideas for getting a deeper insulation cavity if you needed. A vented roof could help too, which is part of a project I'm working on now. Feel free to shoot me an email about your project.
