Really appreciate you dedicating some time to show us this. My philosophy tho and I’m sure yours is you have to take the bad lights to get the good ones. Last job had some decent lights then they had about 20 fluorescent office trougher lights that I told them I would take. That way they remember me next job. I know your the same way. But I guess charging a fee to remove the crap ones makes sense too
I usually would have charged for this but they had a dumpster they were gonna through them in for free. Figured it would make a good video, I knew I would not be making money before I loaded them.
Funny as hell how you tried talking yourself out of breaking the Ballast all the way. I think for the hobby scrapper it would pay off to breaking down completely. I understand you have to move on and cut your losses and move to more profitable scrapping. Glad I came across your videos. You strike me as someone who I could kick back and have a beer with after a hard day's work.
Here mate there is a company in Florida that buy's plastic from you I just typed plastic recycling companies in Florida and it came up with a couple but you will need to check the rest of it yourself mate as they were talking about diferent kinds of plastic and diferent ways to prepare them. All the Best from Dundee Scotland.👍👍✌👊👊
You peaked my interest in induction lighting. Looked it up. Very interesting. Those round lamp looking things cost about $100. Learn something new everyday!
Those aluminum ballasts are easy to clean up as well, you can put on side into your vice and open it up either by man handling it or using your hammer with a couple of love taps. the pcb should just peel out. be sure to remove those screws holding in the transistors.
I do all that micro scrapping like what you're talking about when I break down old TV sets I just pull the paper off of that Transformer stuff and I throw it in with the number two copper.
A fast way to remove the wire from those ferrite doughnut halves is just to grab one end of the wire and drop the ferrite towards a bucket. The weight of the ferrite will unwind the wire, the ferrite will come off into the bucket and the wire will be in your hand.
Are you able to find a recycling place that would take the plastic domes and one for the glass bulbs? Not sure if there is such a place that would take them or not, just curious, great video though!!!
I would have called it too. Those little transformers might have had a little copper, but just think of it as education to not scrap those type of lights again. And education is usually not always free. You had a pile of money sitting in your truck bed that was losing value the more you screwed with those lights. You did the right thing. Other option is to charge the customer a flat rate to take them all, strip out the easy stuff and move on. Have a great weekend man.
Thanks. Don't get me wrong, It was a great video to watch. Always interesting with your narrative and then the FF 2x speed action. I know all the work that goes into the edits. Good stuff.
Nice video been waiting..when are you buying the shop next door and and putting in the hammer mill and 💧 slush for all! Of it.. oh by the way a u loving the amg that its back. Lol J from ny
YOU ALWAYS COME ACROSS SOME INTERESTING OBJECTS.. WHAT ELSE COULD THOSE BALLASTS BE USED FOR? ANY IDEAS? TY FOR SHARING YOUR FINDS.. SOME OF US JUST LOVE THEM IN THE "SHOW ME" STATE.. I KNOW I DO.. FORWARD! Sis Margo-KC
On those ballasts, I think I would have done the 8 screws, taken the easy aluminum, and thrown the bottom half in aluminum breakage (or ballasts if your yard would take them that way). Either that, or thrown all the bottoms in a barrel and stored them to run in the hammer mill when you get it up and running.
@@ProjectShopFl I would'nt have done what he said either as I use a bolster chizel(wide chizel thats used doing brick work) if you get the right size it only takes two hits and there clean.👍👍✌👊👊
I would say the easiest way to remove the “glued board or transformers whatever is in those electronic ballast is to heat them up on the bottom and should slide right out
@@ProjectShopFl could you expand a little. Is it through a company or an individual (electrician).. been trying to find away to get transformers. But, hitting dead ends. Appreciate
Depends, if you have a ton of work, not worth the time, if you have hours to spare, might as well get the most out of what you already have if you enjoy micro scrapping, many do enjoy micro scrapping, you seemed annoyed and frustrated, so unless you enjoy, don’t do it, you also made a few bucks out of having the content for RUclips that was a little different, I enjoyed the journey, so thanks for going the distance😫
The round sticks on the chipboard, are capasitors and loaded with copper aswel. A bunch off those must be worth something... Maybe you can sell them with the transformers.
Ok so she. I said my last job was 100+ of those lights. They look almost ide rival but they weren’t induction lights. I’ve come across of a lot of lights I didn’t even know these existed so . Like you said they just be a west coast thing or just jot popular
As is those suck breaking down just not profitable enough you made the right call.Had a ton of them a few months ago after about ten i threw in the towel the weight you get from them does not justify the time spent.
That stuff you call Transformer steel is actually iron ferrite. And yes there are various grades of it. Essentially it's a mixture of iron and carbon. And yes it is used for magnetic induction purposes.
So if we ever run across this kind of lighting charge them 20 dollars apiece to dispose is what I get out of it...cause at 6 hours to break down 48 light and you made 99dollars it isn't worth free even , unless you send as breakage and then you would still have to off the plastic i would think.
In holland i can sell the little board transformers for 50 cent/kg when i leave them on the board i can sell the complete lowgrade board for 2 euro /kg i dont understand why but i leave them on haha
When I get these types of warehouse lamps free if they have plastic bell light diffusers they go straight into the shred pile no work easy peasy get paid move on to the next items no trash to dispose of.
you spend more time changing your mind then its worht lol u debate over and over and keep going back to the same item you said you werent gonna mess with
i just put any ballasts like that to one side and every so often do 1 come in handy if you run out of work lol
I still have them. lol
Incredibly valuable time/cost analysis!! Thanks for making this.
No problem.
Can't win em all...thanks for taking the time to show us
👊
What a great video i like how you explain every thing on what you are doing
Thanks

Is it more efficient to just dump them as shred at the nearest yard as soon as you pick them up and not process them at all?
Thanks for the info.

Is the housing always cast aluminum. I’m asking because my scrap yard in Montreal, is giving me a white metal price, which is half that of cast.
I always sell them as cast al and have never had any issues.
Are you able to find a recycling place that would take the plastic domes and one for the glass bulbs? Not sure if there is such a place that would take them or not, just curious, great video though!!!
I take them to the local dump. No one will buy them.

I scrapped out about a 100 of those electronic ballasts at work but they had solid silicon and boards inside. Had to cut them out. I feel the hassle.
Definitely a lot of work.

7:50 those are ferrites (if that's what i'm looking at)

Maybe, but once I got behind them they came out pretty easy. If I would have done them all after the 3rd one I would have been knocking them out.
You mentioned in a video that you had another channel? Did I hear that wrong? If not what is it
Yes I thought I sent a link to them.
@@ProjectShopFl what’s the name of the other channel I didn’t see a link
It's definitely all just shred but like you said it makes for a video and I see a lot of people micro scrapping things for the little bit of money.
If it's all you got I think it would be worth it.
What was the final profit/time ?
$100 for 6 hours, I could have prone it faster but it was 2 different days. I knew this was not gonna be a money maker.
What about the gold on the boards
How would you recover it?
Great video. But, curious on the large transformer’s you picked up. What kind of company do you get them from.
Electrical contractor

What else do people have to do besides sitting on there butt
It was annoying. lol
Would it have been easier or faster. To use a cutting blade on a grinder. To cut the heads off the screws. To remove the top of the ballast.
Not really they came right out, I think it would just be wasting blades.
The round sticks on the chipboard, are capasitors and loaded with copper aswel. A bunch off those must be worth something...

love it

On those ballasts I would have taken the screws off both sides and tape the piece out it should slide right out

Definitely would have to charge for them next time
Do you do any dumpster diving for scrap or how do you get what you get
Buys its from tradesmen
No, but I wouldn't think twice if I saw something nice. lol
top vid
Thanks
Ferrite is the transformer stuff you were thinking of
Yes thanks
The plastic lamp guards can be sold as micro green houses.
Good Idea
It’s ferrite it should be worth less then actual steel. However yards take it as shred steel.
Thanks for the info.
Sell the boards as low grade boards... ask the yards around your area. price .15¢ - .45¢ a pound.
Thanks for the suggestion

Get a high speed screw driver. Would cut way down the time to get screws out.
I'm using high speed impact drivers. lol
They must have been the ones from Sarasota

Are you dyslexic by chance? You did something that caught my eye, so I'm curious. No offense meant, just curiosity!
Not that I know of. lol What did I do?
I was hoping you'd fire one up.... The disappointment is palpable.
I will try next time

Definitely charge to take them, but I don't think 20 a light is gonna fly. lol
in the long run might make more since you took them that buisnes might choose you over other scrapers
They are one of my original customers. lol

We're worth 100 English pounds each before he stripped and ruined them lol 1000s he just threw away 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'll probably make more off the video. lol
No profit there.
Agreed.
Cut losses. As is sall.
