    Nice video man. Resistance 2 scared the hell out me when I was younger; which was paradoxical because I loved it at the same time.

      Cheers... glad you enjoyed my retrospective! No one had really done a deep dive into the Resistance series apart from GVMERS and their "Rise and Fall" video and I figured it would be fitting for Insomniac's 25th birthday.
      I didn't get into R2 till a while after its release; I heard all the reviewers singing its praises and couldn't wait to jump in. Years later though, it doesn't amount to much in my book.

    A slight error: Resistance as a franchise actually ended in 2012 after the release of Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita. The title from Nihilistic Software is acknowledged towards the end of the video and in the credits.

    Cool video man,i hope Sony give another chance to resistance,it seems that they need more exclusive FPS games. Now they own Insomniac, so who knows.

    • @CainageCritique
      @CainageCritique  3 года назад +1

      Potentially... though it depends on which project Insomniac wants to take on next. They might go down the new IP route like Guerilla Games did. Though I agree, PlayStation 5 could use an FPS franchise that caters to the masses.

    Great Review! I personally enjoyed Fall of Man the most, it's alternate history is actually really interesting (USA Isolationist, Germany not becoming a national-socialist state etc.) and I enjoyed the more "war documentary style" narrative. I just wish that Insomniac had continued to go on a more lore focused story, explaining the Chimeran War, showing us Russia after Fall of Man etc. and just build up on the great setting overall. If they had gone with this, plus the improved gameplay and graphics of the second and third game it would have certainly performed better on the market.

    • @CainageCritique
      @CainageCritique  4 года назад +1

      Cheers... yeah a lot of that detail was left to the background. One trailer for Resistance 2 speaks to a lot of missed potential. Considering how folks used to call Resistance Sony's Halo killer, Insomniac certainly could have gone further with the overarching lore.

  • @OniLink96

    Resistance 3 was certainly the strongest campaign in the trilogy.
    As far as the story goes, Capelli's change in character was definitely abrupt and somewhat frustrating, but I enjoy the character in R3 and by the time we get to his radio transmission in New York I was certainly willing to buy into the drama.
    I also did like seeing the slices of life after the fall as Joe and Malikov traveled post-apoclypse America. Overall, I think it was strong and there was good variation in the way that each group of people lived.
    It's good to see someone actually taking a look at these games. They seem to be largely forgotten after 2011 and I think that's a shame. FoM and R3 are solid FPS games and the trilogy as a whole has a setting that I wish we ended up getting more of. I should definitely pick up Retribution one of these days and maybe even give Burning Skies a shot.

      Have you ever taken a look at Disruptor? It's a quality freshman effort on Insomniac's part and was interesting to play after having already been familiar with Insomniac's return to the FPS genre. It plays well, but it's really goofy and has those amazing mid-nineties live-action FMVs.

      @@OniLink96 I've heard of Disruptor; it would definitely be interesting to see how Insomniac Games got their start but I imagine it's extremely rare. Perhaps there's a digital copy on the PlayStation Store.

    We unfortunately know from the Insomniac leaks that they sadly have zero plans to make sequels/spinoffs or remakes of Resistance. It’s such a shame because there’s a lot of potential with the series. There was going to be a 4th game, but Sony pulled the plug because it was too similar to Last of Us. Also, since Shrexbox could very well be going third party and pulling out its safe to say Sony DONT have any incentive to bring back their older shooters (assuming all those leaks/news about Xbox putting their main titles on PlayStation/Switch are true. It might be too early to say, but thing aren’t looking good for Xbox).
    From what I’ve heard Killzone and Resistance are on PS Plus. I don’t have a PlayStation and have been moving to pc since Gamepass works on it, and aside from Nintendo most console games will be coming to pc. It would be nice if Sony did something to revitalize the brand like an enhanced collection, or Resident Evil/Dead Space style remakes of their older games. Sadly, they don’t really care about preservation or backwards compatibility (if the PS5 was backwards compatible I’d buy one yesterday). Remakes of these and Killzone could fix a lot of the issues in story, gameplay, level design, and other things while staying mostly faithful. At least we have emulation.
    Both Killzone and Resistance have really interesting settings with plenty of room for storytelling. It’s a shame that as neither has an expanded universe like Halo, Dead Space, Gears of War, and several other games do. Having books, comics, and animations can really enhance a setting, and if the series is dead can allow passionate fans to see how things conclude. I LOVE when settings have extended lore. Unfortunately, things like modern Halo have become over reliant on said expanded universe, resulting in the games not making any sense unless you’ve delved into the out of game sources. It’s a careful balancing act between having a fleshed out expanded universe with multiple plot threads that build up to something big, and having a self contained game series that doesn’t require you to go out of your way to understand the story. There’s a lot of ways it can go wrong or right.
    I’m sure I’d like Resistance 3 the most because in terms of gameplay and set pieces it has A LOT in common with Half-Life 2 electric boogaloo. One of the levels is literally Ravenholm with Chimera.

    • @CainageCritique
      @CainageCritique  7 месяцев назад

      You raise some interesting points; I'm surprised that the Resistance franchise was buried within the recent leaks after languishing away in the company vaults for so long.
      I agree that Sony really should revisit some franchises that are ripe for the remake treatment. They have a clear identity with cinematic story-driven franchises, but this has also caused some older gems, both single and multiplayer, to be left behind. The most notable include Ape Escape, Syphon Filter and Warhawk.
      The PlayStation 5 is actually backwards compatible with PS4 titles, but unfortunately due to the PS3's cell architecture, all exclusives remain locked to that system. Some titles have made their way to digital emulation via PS Plus and PS Now, but the black box still sticks out like a sore thumb when Sony made the effort on other console generations both past and present.

    Very good video. It sucks that Sony won't bother revisiting the Resistance series in the future as all three games were quite fun when I first played them during the PS3 days especially the Resistance trilogy
    I was reading a few weeks ago that Resistance 4 was pitched twice on the PS4/PS5. The first was a Resistance 4 from Insomniac Games as a PS4 Launch title but was scrapped due to being similar to The Last of Us while the second pitch was from Bend Studio who pitched an Open World Resistance 4 similar to Days Gone but this was scrapped as well due to Sony not being interested in reviving the Series (most likely due to the sales figures mentioned in the video) which really sucks as I (like most fans) would love this series to have a revival of sorts due to the series containing a lot of lore.
    The only way I could see Resistance coming back is through an adaptation by PlayStation Productions as either a TV Show or Film. I've written a few ideas of what a Resistance series could be.
    1) A prequel based on Jordan Shepard detailing his life i.e., his upbringing, his time at SRPA, etc.
    2) An original story set during the Chimeran Invasion following original characters
    3) A prequel set in Russia detailing the Tunguska Incident (The Origins of how the Chimera invaded Russia) perhaps featuring Dr Malikov as the Protagonist, Side Character or Cameo [your comments made in the video inspired this idea :)]
    4) Simply adapt the Games/Novels/Comics in a TV/Movie format
    Additionally I think Michael Bay would be good as the producer and/or a Director for a Resistance Adaptation due to being able to direct cinematic action sequences as well as having amazing CGI/Effects which could give a Resistance adaptation a true end of the world feel. Additionally, I believe his Production Company Platinum Dunes (known for 'A Quiet Place', 'Jack Ryan', 'The Purge' and Multiple Horror Movie Remakes) could be involved. If not Michael Bay I think Zack Snyder, Doug Limen (The Edge of Tomorrow) or, Guillermo Del Toro (Pacific Rim) would be considered as good alternatives.
    It may seem unlikely to see a Resistance adaptation but keep in mind we've gotten a Twisted Metal TV Show (the upcoming video game revival was recently cancelled due to Firesprite suffering massive layoffs but could be picked up by another developer). Moreover, a Gravity Rush Movie as well as a Jak & Daxter Movie starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt are in development which are franchises that have been dormant for a while (especially Jak & Daxter) so Resistance could have a shot imo.

    • @CainageCritique
      @CainageCritique  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed the retrospective. Resistance still has a pretty dedicated fanbase, though sadly the odds of a comeback are slim. That said, leaning into the alternate history and delving into the untouched lore chapters would be a great way to pull players back in. I can see that approach making for a solid build-up to a fourth game.

      @@CainageCritique There was a podcast from IGN where they interviewed Marcus Smith (Resistance’s Creative Director) and he was asked if there were any alternate stories for the third game as well as ideas that he and the Insomniac team wanted to explore.
      Funnily enough your idea from the video was mentioned as he wanted Resistance 3 to be set in Russia but rather than present day they wanted to use time travel to prevent the Chimeran Invasion from spreading which would have been interesting. Alternatively, he mentioned that Asia was considered to be the main location of Resistance 3 which would have also been good imo.

    • @CainageCritique
      @CainageCritique  6 месяцев назад

      @@MysterioGyllenhaal19 Time travel eh? That's tough to get right; I feel like that would have taken away from the alternative history timeline. Asia would have been an interesting setting. You don't see many FPS titles set in that environment and it would have interesting to see how the Chimera spread through China and other parts of the region.

    • @MysterioGyllenhaal19
      @MysterioGyllenhaal19 6 месяцев назад

      @@CainageCritique I agree with you as at first I thought it would be interesting (I even speculated that they could have made Joseph Capelli the protagonist to redeem himself) but it's definitely one of those ideas that sound good on paper but would be poorly executed. Another thing Marcus mentioned in his interview was that Resistance 3 was going to be a spin off rather than a mainline game but the team couldn't brainstorm an appropriate subtitle.
      It was also mentioned that various intel that appeared throughout the games were meant to be teasers for potential spin offs i.e., Operation Aloha (Intel from Resistance 2 where the Government 170,000 Americans to the Hawaiian Islands in order to preserve the American culture, history and way of life. However, after radio contact was lost between Hawaii and the American mainland all 170,000 Americans as well as 7 Battleships vanished [this article tells the story better than I could if your interested resistance.fandom.com/wiki/Operation_Aloha]) which Marcus wanted to adapt as DLC side game which could have been interesting as an Island never appeared in any of the games, we could have gotten an idea of how the Government operated which wasn't really mentioned outside of the novels and Burning Skies (which I haven't read/played) and we could have seen how everyday civilians were feeling during this time (I'm aware that R3 and Burning Skies did this but I'd like it to be covered in more detail).
