That was about the best guest Meat Eater has had on the show. Smart, calm, aware, accurate and good looking. Someone I’d love to see on the show again. Yep, Ruby is probably my favorite so far
I absolutely hate when people waste or say Canada geese aren’t good eating. If you aren’t enjoying them you are flat out not cooking it right. A goose feeding in an agricultural field is top notch eating. Shame of those who waste them.
I agree. I've been hunting and eating Canada geese for 40 years and even when my wife watches a flock flying over when out and about shopping or anywhere, she'll say "mmm, gooseburger steaks"! 😁. Even the thighs and legs are cooked down in a crockpot and enjoyed in chili or soup in the winter!
That was great.... Really really nice. There's no waterfowl hunting to speak of where I am so this is amazing to see. One day I may just come over to the states for this.
Ruby had some KC Byck Truck energy! She was on FIRE until it was time to power down and the hunt was over. Hunting and working dogs are fascinating to watch.
Sometimes, the nastiest, worst calling is what they want? I **LOVE** the way Janis walks us through the reasoning and steps behind a hunt. And I've never seen a potato field hunt. That was pretty legit!
I don't hunt waterfowl, and I don't have a dog. But I do like to watch a happy dog picking up birds and being awesome. I also like it when you put some cooking in the episodes. Sorry for your defective ammo Janis.
Warmest time of day is never in the morning unless a front is coming or has come through.... early to midafternoon is always the warmest given constant weather patterns.
Got my first goose and crane hunt coming up this season. Just started my waterfowl journey with some new family influence. Most of the guys say they don’t care for goose meat, I’ll probably volunteer to take their goose meat off their hands.
Check out the pastrami recipe in michael rhulmans book. (Hes been a podcast guest and i think he was in a short with steve). And that pastrami recipe turns into smoked meat which is a second layer of amazing and gives you the flexiest flex on all your friends that have a smoker. And goose pastrami and smoked meat sandwiches would be a great tailgate option if you want to thank these guys for letting you take theirs off their hands…
Surprised no one has pointed out how they try to convince us how good goose is to eat and then they end up feeding it to the dog. 🤣🤣 Seriously though, that did look pretty tasty!
It would be cool if we could once and for all get rid of the "northern Canadian red-legs mallard" myth! Bright legs are a result of hormonal changes, not of where they're from or how cold it's been!
I always want the weather to be kinda bad for geese, not raining but almost and cloudy (canadian mostly) sunny and clear is no good from my exp. But we sont have these huuuge fields in my area.
Two things you’re doing wrong. 1: you’ve probably got too tight of choke (you need skeet or improved cylinder over field decoys), and 2: you’re probably looking at the barrel, or “aiming”, which usually means your swing stops with no follow-through. Get some professional help, it’s all fixable.
Every year it gets harder to get permission on fields. Would be cool to see an episode where you knock on 10 farm doors and get denied 9 times, but these dudes are probably paying land owners to hunt their fields.
Janis vs. Accuracy. One of the greatest rivalries of all time.
I mean really, what the heck was that first shot? 😂😂😂
I mean, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Haha
Tale as old as time
Needs to hit the clay on the range 🤣
Aimpoint S1 might be a good buy!

I watched the first 5 minutes of this video wondering who tf you were talking about lol. And agreed ruby is easily the best guess!
Such a beautiful dog
Damn good pupper!
Love watching working dogs . Beautiful animal . A very Enjoyable episode .
Fantastic episode, please continue making plenty of waterfowl content. Ruby was amazing!
Ruby is the star of this episode... Good girl

Crockpot goose is the best!!!
Crockpot or goose chili
Agreed. If you’re wasting the bird you have no right to hunt them in my book. Enjoy the bounty or find a different sport.
My kind of hunt...2 friends and a good dog. Way to go Max and Janis!
"I was holding the wrong implement!" 😂
Had a deer catch me in that position once!🤷♂️
Max should be the face of MeatEater, voice and face of an angel
I love watching a bird dog work! They LOVE their life and their job!
That was great.... Really really nice. There's no waterfowl hunting to speak of where I am so this is amazing to see. One day I may just come over to the states for this.
Always great to see the Latvian eagle in front of a camera
Max seems like the nicest fella!
Really enjoyed this episode MAKE MAX AND RUBY REGULARS! Very knowledgeable and down to earth
Great dog work. For me that is the best part of hunting waterfowl. Great to see the dog not break when the birds came in.or when the gun went off

No offense guys, but Ruby was definitely the star of the show!
Good shooting fellas!
Love the waterfowl hunts

Dog was by far the star of this episode !!
Janis is a legend.
Looks like a fun hunt with great dog work.
Ruby liked it all in one bite so that's what I would call "Ruby Approved" !!
19:47 what is he doing to dispatch that bird? I've always struggled with dispatching injured birds
Waterfowl dispatching tool, it's basically a spike you insert into the brain.
Maybe I'm just basic but i always liked goose. Often times we just cut kabobs, marinade in Italian dressing, and grill hot & fast
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing
Janis has a voice for cartoons. "Oh COME ON JANI" lmao
The Latvian Eagle has landed!
Hell of a hunt!
Why is no one talking about how they gave Ruby her own little blind
It’s pretty standard to hide the dog well.
As ol Dez Young always said “never EVER spoil your bird dog!” 😂😂
what were you guys using to dispatch the birds?
That's what I'm trying to find out, interested to know!
Max is a cool dude
I love your videos your videos give alot of information btw I just got my hunting license and going deer hunting wish good luck and tag Is secured 😀
The safest place for geese and duck is 10 feet right in front of Janis. Great episdoe.
"you're mouthing it
"well, not quite like that" lmao
Warmest time of day is never in the morning unless a front is coming or has come through.... early to midafternoon is always the warmest given constant weather patterns.
Your fully mouthing it 😮😂
that bird coming back for more is crazy
So, Canadian geese taste good. That settles it. SHTF i'm heading to the golf course.
Tastes incredible. So many ways to prepare it too. Anyone who says they taste bad should not be trusted to cook.
A nicely Seared rare goose breast is right up there with steak. Throw in some duck sauce or sweet chili. Chef’s kiss.
Yup just don't overcook them, then they taste gamey.
Hot tip- use evaporated milk. Youll get a better flavor and richness than any milk gravy

hey whats that tool the guy is using on their necks?
I think the dog was the star 😅
Max fired the only shot that landed in that opening exchange

Yeah. No waterfowler I know calls it “side slappin” it’s just a simple crossing shot setup.
Only 3 shots?
hell yeah
Wait...did Jani say, early December 🤔 lol
What was Max using to dispatch those birds? Looked like he was pushing something into the back of their heads. Maybe a nail into the brain?
It is called a finisher. Looks like a quarter with a spike on one edge.
@@Eric-dr5bj Nice. Waterfall hunted for many years until recently I never heard of one.
Why not just break the neck?@@Eric-dr5bj
@@Eric-dr5bjwe just give them the old ringer

Ruby was amazing!
Janis's shooting....not so much
Flute grazers
Latvian eagle can't hit the broad side of a barn.
Never ask the guide “are you sure or why not do this “
Hens eat too

Ruby should get a bird for self
Honkleroonies
@meateater Disappointed that you only show breasting out those big birds. I hope you also saved/used legs and thighs.
Dude, they are only good for grinding from the ones I have saved, crazy tough...what do you use them for?
Just made some carnitas with mine last week
Janis is wayyyy to passive agressive for me he gave that man hell the whole time crying and whining not digging it
Janis needs to practices at the range ..... LOL damn busy whats with that wack aim!

I hate stinks
Hard to find stuff fatkids wont eat after a hunt day
😂🤣😅
I need Steve in the episode otherwise not interested
You're missing out big time then.
Good girl Ruby.
