  • In this video I unbox and test a set of Black Widow pencils. These pencils come in sets of 3 sets of 24 and two skin tone sets (light and dark skin). I was sent this set of Black Widow Dark Skin pencils from a fan. In this video I test these pencils. As the name implies the Black Widow pencils are colored pencils that are encased in black wood. The Black Widow Colored pencils are wax based, on the harder side but smooth. The color choice seems interesting and while these are not the colors i would choose I can see how these colors would be very effective in coloring a wonderful variety of dark skin tones. If you are looking for affordable wax based colored pencils that are a little off the beaten path these might be for you.

I didn't care for the naming system, either, but if my PC is reliable, I thought some of these colors were really rich and appealing. I have zero experience with portraiture, but agree w/Karia that a blue tone is necessary. I think these colors would be really useful in landscape drawing. TY, Karia. Love that you show products we don't always get the chance to learn about.

Chuckling so much at you, Lady! Negra....I'm just going to leave that right there...…..You make my day.
When the pencil was upside down I could read it and I thought, "oh boy! Here we go!" lol
Negra is actually Spanish for black. In Puerto Rican Culture it's actually a term of endearment. However I'm not sure I would call a pencil color that isn't actually black, black no matter what language. OMG and who uses names like these in a set marked skin tones, anyway? Leather.....Mud...… I'm laughing so hard. This just struck my giggle bone so much.

Hey Karia....I have all of the Black Widow pencils, the Spider, Scorpion, Cobra and both skin tones. The names on all are somewhat odd. They didn't have color names or numbers when they first came out. As a result of user input, the company started to name the colors and they used the individual set name as inspiration. For instance the Spider set includes fang green, toxic green, spider web, huntsman, and tarantula. There are other insect names such as cicada and stinkbug. They seemed to run out of imagination and used starry knight, banana, and toadstool among others. Not any real traditional color names except amethyst and pumpkin. That's just the Spider set. Learning the colors by name is more difficult for sure.
Aside from that I find them to be good middle of the road pencils for the price.

Thanks for the review, I've been wondering what these pencils are like too. I agree with you about colour names, I prefer traditional names, that way you know what to expect. I always have a bit of a issue with these sets as you can probably find these colours in any good large set of pencils, and all the other tones you might need such as the reds, purples blues etc. I find skin colour a complex area that contains colours and shades that you might not expect to be there. Thanks for another great review.

Geesh, whoever came up with those names should lose their job. I mean "mud"? The color range looks useful but those names. Your reviews are some of the very best.

I just got mine yesterday and did a quick color on card stock. (Probably not the best paper to use, I know!) One thing I noticed is the leads act differently after sharpening. These come with a rounded tip that does lay down color, but they were much better after I sharpened them. Also, I think the dark skin tone set works for most skin tones. The light ones are too bright for my taste, anyway. I do agree with you on the names - having them equate to more traditional color names would be helpful for selections. I am looking forward to seeing how your results are!

They definitely have a strange way of naming their colors… I think there’s a story behind that… But what I wanna know, is how did you swatch 13 colors with 12 pencils? LOL thanks for the review :-)

These were recommended to me last year and I forgot them. I thought they were a bit pricey, but they may have come down. Now, if you have seen the oddling I colored on your Facebook page, I did use peach, but I think that a lot of these colors are totally perfect for elfin skin tones! I know, I'm weird.
BTW, I support only two people on Patreon...you and Hannah Lynn!
My friend in Indonesia had a kitty playing around in front of her shop for a couple of days but didn't pay any attention. Then she heard people screaming and a car had run over the kitty and kept going. She got the kitty to the hospital and it had to have it's right leg amputated. Even though she has two cats, she would not let them put the cat down, named him Mini and has adopted him. It was amazing how quickly that kitty was getting around on three legs! I have good friends.

Yeah, Hannah Lynn does free pages to color every month. The same image, but detailed, less detailed, book marks, letter page, and two others I think. I joined at the 4.99 level to get the free stuff but still stay on the Facebook page. She just started about 4 or 5 months ago.

I am interested to see what you make of them, I found that you would need both sets to use with dark skin tones and the light skin tone but you could also mix them with other portrait sets if people only want the portrait sets. I believe they should have bought out the 24 as a whole set because I needed to use pencils from each set to do different skin tones. do understand why they separated them. I want to see what you think on the colour names of the pencils. Will comment after i have watched your review

Thing is, most ("all") colored pencil sets feature a lack of muted colors. Which is why there should be a potential market for specialty sets like this.
But I'm not really sure any of these pens have a color that is actually missing? Like from the 120 sets. For owners of smaller sets it's a different situation, of course.
