The first I've seen of a Nordhavn motorsailer since Jeff Merrill (no longer with Nordhavn) gave a presentation/demonstration of it many years ago. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed.
Cassidy's Sailing Trawler < I’m curious about the operational aspect of your motor sailer. I assume you augment the sail with the motor. Does the boat feel more stable under sail vs. power. Do you use the stabilization under sail (suspect not). What sort of range do you plan for now.
Judd S - the 56MS does not have any fin stabilizers like a lot of the traditional trawlers do. She relies on presenting some amount of sail to the wind for stabilization. There are times when I would really love to have the option to push a button and stabilize the boat but the tradeoff would be a lot of wetted area drag when trying to sail. The hull is very very efficient. Worst possible conditions for this boat are low single digit apparent wind and a direct beam sea. She rolls on a long period with relatively high amplitude. Its a learning curve on what to do in those conditions. What we have learned is that going to windward or even if it is really light air, a reefed close hauled main will usually generate enough lift to stabilize the boat.
You prolly dont care but does anybody know of a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
Glad to see you back. I was starting to wonder where you were. Figured that you were out sailing. Love, Love LOVE your new boat. Liked your old one but this one is so nice.
Brian Dick - we have just been incredibly busy and ended up with a big backlog of footage. I hope to post some in depth reviews of the various systems on our new boat. We are really enjoying her and still really making it ours and getting used to everything.
@@CassidysSailingTrawler She really is a beautiful boat, I can't wait to see where you go with her. Love your footage from last years trip. I live on the east coast of Vancouver island. If you went up Discovery passage, you went through my part of the world and darn near past my front door.

Had the pleasure of walking aboard "Nord Sail One" when it arrived at Elliott Bay Marina in Seattle. Never understood why on The Walking Dead they didn't go looking for one, commandeer it, and live like kings
therissomecoolstuff - everyone is doing well. We had a lot of crew changes on the trip from Florida to Mexico and sometimes family was not onboard for the longer passages.
Gary Cummings - 21.40 pesos/liter sounds about right. Our total fuel bill there was over $3,000 USD for a little under 700 gallons of diesel. Most expensive fuel of the entire trip and it was serious hassle to take on!
Hello Cassidy's Sailing Trawler, I have asked this question in the past and wish to ask again because my wife and I are in the market for our retirement yacht and I personally find myself attracted to the N56. Does/has this vessel met your expectations and why? Kind regards, John from PNW ( we used to live in San Diego for 30 years and miss it!)
We really like the boat so far. The efficiency and smooth ride into headseas are just amazing for a boat of this size. The other thing that I really like is the truly redundant source of propulsion that the sailing rig brings - plus the increased range as an added benefit. We didn't have any sailing background and the rig is totally manageable - even single handed in good conditions. A couple things that are a compromise - the galley is relatively small for a boat of this size, and the you lose the larger high up exterior spaces that are available on the trawlers like the boat deck and the flying bridge on the boats that have the exterior bridge. There is a lot of room on top of the pilothouse though and when the tender is in the water its another place to hang out while anchored. And the foredeck is absolutely huge.
Thank you so very much for your reply! I have been reviewing the N56 for some time. I currently cannot narrow down what I wish to pursue. I can make a case for trawlers, semi-displacements, mono and cat sailers. I really like the Krogens, but also like the roominess of Nordhavns. With your input (which has confirmed my suspicions), I will once again move the N56 back to the top of my "A" list. Kind regards,
So how are you liking the sailing/ motor vessel vs your old one? Are you enjoying the benefits and how long do you figure the monetary benefits will take to show a positive impact vs the m/v only yacht you sold? Thanks!
HardTargert - we really like this boat so far. Has a familiar Nordhavn feel but is very different than the N40. I don't think there is honesty a huge financial benefit from having the sailing rig. Its a big rig to maintain and the sails will not be inexpensive when we need to replace them. I've heard ballpark figures of $15-$25k which would buy a lot of diesel. I think that the real benefit of the sailing rig is virtually unlimited range with the right wind conditions, and a truly redundant form of propulsion vs. a wing engine that is reliant on the same fuel as a main engine.
Cassidy's Sailing Trawler valid point on the unlimited range. I never thought about a backup engine using the same fuel. That’s a great point, bad fuel problems would be crippling. Thank you for the thoughtful answer to my questions. I learned something new as a result. Appreciate it. Stay safe out there, fair winds sir.
Hi Dougal. I met you in Dana Point during the NFF. I was wondering what brand and model you have for your folding bikes as I've been looking for something similar. Also, are there particular features you found very useful on the bikes?
+John Wilson - we used Rad Minis from Rad Power Bikes who are based in Seattle but the bikes are online order only - I don’t think they are available in retail stores. Overall we really liked the bikes as far as functionality. Huge amount of cargo carrying capability great ride on most terrain including soft sand and even snow. Down sides are a few - they are very heavy at 60 lbs each so handling them on and off of the boat was a bit of work - to the extent that we ended up not taking them out as often as we thought we would. The other thing is that they have a traditionally drive train with a derailleur in the back and exposed chain so it’s something that requires constant care in a salt water environment. We rinsed ans sorayed then wirh corrosion x pretty religiously and kept covered on the deck in custom made bags. If money was no object I’d look at the various models from Gocycle. Great engineering and they are magnesium and have en enclosed belt drive. Also about half the weight of the Rad Minis.
Rodney Pratt - Our bow was tied to a mooring can that was set off at an angle to the fuel dock - so there was no way we could get the stern perpendicular to the dock. A lot of things in Mexico are..... interesting?
I am worried. Such a long time without a vid then no mention of the family. I hope all is well and everyone is doing well and you are together and happy. ALL the best.
vvmmuu - no worries - everyone is good. We are parked in Ensenada, MX for hurricane season. This footage is a few months old and we will be posting more in the near future.
michael d - it is different. We haven't had favorable wind conditions on any of our passages yet so have always been running the motor while sailing. Having to watch and trim the sails definitely makes passages less monotonous though.
It's different than a pure powerboat for sure! The gimbaled stove comes into its element when heeled like that. I've since learned to handle the rig better and with the in boom furling system that allows almost infinite reefing (although they do suggest reefing at a batten) its often possible to reef the main and reduce heel and not lose much if any boat speed.
Awesome we will let you know if we have plans to get over there any time soon. We spent a week on the big Island a few years ago and really enjoyed it. The black sand beach was especially cool!
Ed Stanton - lots of variables. It depends how much wind there is , where the wind is coming from, and how much fuel we want to burn. But we can move over 10 knots if we want to...
Brian Litz - totally fair question. It does not actually need a lot of wind. The unfortunate reality is that the apparent wind was well ahead of the beam for almost the entire trip from Florida to Panama and then north to Baja so we were motorsailing close hauled almost the entire way. We were also on a delivery type schedule with rotating crew and requirements from insurance to get north of the hurricane latitudes by July 1 so there wasn't really much opportunity to steer away from the wind. We are definitely looking forward to getting out and actually sailing her. When we turn around and head back south along Baja that should be a really good test of the actual pure sailing capabilities of the boat.
