    Hannah, think about moving that fire extinguisher from above your stove. If you had a fire there (most likely place), the flames
    might reach as high as the extinguisher and you'd get burned reaching for it, or be too afraid to reach for it, with terrible consequences. Best place to hang it: near the exit. This was an interesting video, well made.

    • @MurphyArtPrints
      @MurphyArtPrints 7 лет назад +8

      Not to mention if a fire extinguisher gets over 120F it will blow up.

    • @footbalr074
      @footbalr074 7 лет назад +24

      Security probably isn't any worse than a female student living solo in a fixed abode. Often scheduling dictates they take they leave the same location at the same time, and walk the same route, creating openings for predators. I don't mean to exaggerate dangers, but being able to drive right up to where ever you're going eliminates a lot of that potential.
      Also lets not be delusional the van doesn't exactly scream she's doing this out of pure necessity. As a college aged male, payments plus insurance on a new sprinter would be costlier than simply renting most of the time.

    • @carolineleslie4836
      @carolineleslie4836 7 лет назад +38

      That is very true-- but the push to do so is strong. I felt extremely pressured to go to college/university straight out of high school. Maybe that says something about me, but it's my personal anecdote. I work and go to school and I am still coming out of undergrad with a nice chunk of debt. I'm not even done with my schooling yet-- I still have about 7 more years (including various things associated with my career choice). And I'll be ~30 when I'm finished and can actually *start* my career.
      So while I technically could have waited before going to college, it didn't really feel as though it were a plausible option, in my case. Life is expensive and it is difficult to balance school and being a functional member of society no matter the age and I'm only speaking as someone who has yet to truly set foot in the "real world." The time, money, and reason I'm going to college is going to prevent/hinder me from accomplishing my other goals in life because there simply won't be time or effort that I can put aside for them until it's too late.
      I'm probably just being pessimistic, but I'll find out in 7 more years. So, I'm sorry about the gibberish, but waiting isn't always an option.

      Sandi - One thing I know for certain is I want to go to the RTR to at least check it out in January. My first destination will be Ehrenberg AZ. I just want to go be still in the beauty for some time. Then, the sky is the limit! I think I will probably be in a travel trailer in the beginning until I know just how I want to live and what I can and can't do without, then probably a van. I just don't think I want to get rid of my Jeep until I'm certain of everything I just mentioned. I will be traveling with my big black dog, possibly two. I recently rescued one from the street and can't seem to find a new human for him, so....... Who knows?

      Best place is contact builders companies and ask if they're getting rid of any vans, Long Wheelbase vans can drive a higer price so look out for them at under the £5k mark.
      Also, vans are commonly Diesel, don't be scared of 300,000 miles or more. A good full service, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, brake pads, timing chain/belt etc are all the best things to get done when you buy an old van. Total price of all that + labor would be about a grand for a Transit

    Quite a simple, optically rustic, bare bones practical, and inexpensive conversion that works well. It makes me think that a permanent bed that is higher up with minimal head room is better than a lower and fold-away bed that is complicated and wastes more space. I will use this for my own build..., thanks!

I would like to do the same as it will be cheaper than building an actual tiny home and a van is transportable and supports for travel. Where do you park for lavatory and toiletry facilities. Caravan parks charge for hire facilities. I suppose you can use local gym facilities too from time to time. I'm only at the conceptual stage.

      Brazilian. I lived in Australia for a few years. I have often been in the US coast to coast and in other countries in Oceania, Asia and the Americas. I've never been to Europe. But in Australia, "broken English" is said of pronunciations as the narrator in question, perhaps joking. As a linguist, I am interested in this, which is my only intention in commenting. Thank you.

      No, her English is perfect, I mean... she's English, she sounds like she's from England. She has a fairly posh, probably southern/London accent. I mean technically her English is pretty close to received pronunciation, so she has very little accent. The up and down rhythm of her English is fairly typical of that accent.

    Great! I lived in a van as an art student in the 1970's - so much better than paying rent for a grotty flat. Parked on Newcastle Hall of Residence car park and used the facilities there. Was eighteen months before I was 'discovered' - sure 'they' used to wonder where the smell of bacon and eggs was coming from! Didn't have a lovely collie with me though.
    More students should consider vanlife.

    Really lovely, I'm a bit sad for the dog tho. I'm sure it's well loved and has plenty room to stretch outside but it's still fairly cramped quarters during indoor hours.. and what happens to pup when you leave?😕

      @jensi1306 7 лет назад +17

      Agreed- she's on a first year of a degree and not sure whether her contact hours are much, much less than mine were (on a completely different course) but she should be in uni most days a week for the majority of each day. That's a lot of time the dog is stuck inside that cramped space.

      My own experience at uni has been that I'm on-campus for long hours but those aren't always entirely in-class. If she can park her van near the school, she might spend the between-class time with her dog, letting it out and walking it around and so on.

  • @idriscam

    Move that fire extinguisher to the door side. Not the best spot above the most volatile fuel source. Plus if you have a fire and your outside as soon as you open the door its easier to get if flames have taken over, thus giving you more chance to save what you can. I have 3 in my van. I started a fire early on in the build around the 3000w inverter and learned very fast haha

    I'm not sure what you call them over there in UK land, but while she's replacing the chimney pipe she should install a damper valve in the pipe. That would, as needed, increase the heat in the stove for easier cooking as well as better heat control and longer burns for those cold winter nights.

    The Indie Project, I really respect what you are doing showing your amazing creativity in order to reach your goals. It feels me with so much anger for our business leaders and so called politicians when i consider the advantages I had in the 70s in reference to education and studying. It appeared that there was so little money available but the system provided more for one's pound. After paying tax and contributing into the social purce, education was considered a right by government. Back then, before Maggie Thatcher introduced the idea of shareholders and private corporations, money collected by the Exchequer was put to work more evenly and honestly to provide services and welfare for its people. Slowly but surely and without any apparent accountability, the assets power and influence we as common people had, has been sold off (with the promise or bribery of shares for the working class man). Daily, I am informed by the media, about the millions that is being made in profit by the corporation shareholders of the "Free Markets" while the government through Austerity and corporation tax cuts, continues to squeeze the tube that provides the flow of oxygen necessary to keep the Welfare State alive. Unless we have a change in culture in the way our Sociopathic leaders govern us, I can see your necessary choice of living becoming a normal way of life for families across England.

Lovely tiny cozy home.
