"Selene 6.23 " is another one of the dozens of songs that was written by Jonghyun, and it has now become a song that the members often sing as a tribute to him. It's songs like this that demonstrates just how good Jonghyun was as a songwriter and why SHINee are some of the best in the industry when it comes to vocals. :D Selene means moon in Greek and 6.23 (2013) was when we had a supermoon, which means the moon was really close to the Earth that day, making it appear extra big and bright. As you can see by the lyrics, the song has a lot of deep meaning. Jonghyun really loved the moon. He saw a lot of beauty and symbolism in the moon and often talking about the moon in interviews and conversations. The song is about an unrequited love that no matter how much time we spend together and how well we get to know each other, you are still out of reach just like the Moon. The moon shines down on us and it's been there our entire lives, and yet it still is miles away and remains out of reach. The other members of SHINee have also said another interpretation of the song could be how the distance between the Moon and Earth was similar to the distance between SHINee and their fans all over the world. In other words, we are miles away from each other and yet really close/dependant on each other, just like the Moon and Earth. The alternate title of the song is "The Distance Between Us," which has now taken on even more meaning since Jonghyun's passing. (We now interpret the lyrics to be talking about the distance between us here on Earth and Jonghyun in Heaven.) It was even said that the moon turned a pearl aqua color -- SHINee's fan color -- the day of Jonghyun's funeral. And fans took comfort in the fact that this meant that his spirit had made it to Heaven and that he was now at peace. And just think, Minho and Key are rappers. That's how outstanding of vocalists SHINee are. Even the rappers can outshine most vocalists in the industry. :D That's why SHINee are so highly respected by absolutely everyone in the industry. There is no one like them in this world and there will never be a group quite like them ever again. ;)
SHINee ballads are on a different level. And yes this song always make me feel emotional, i tear up. Their vocals, emotions.. and Jonghyun writing this song. Now this song has a new meaning at least for me. Knowing that no matter how hard we try, he is no longer there and we can never reach him (at least physically). Missing you Jjong.
Yes! They covered IU's Dear name, it's so beautiful ruclips.net/video/F5YmLkh8nV4/видео.html Also, for Onew on Sea of Hope, my favorite was his cover of Lie Lie Lie (it's about kids who get abandoned by their parents, so use this link for subs, the official video isn't subbed) ruclips.net/video/KztWBpNRXHg/видео.html
The moment Jonghyun comes in with his first lines I always get tears in my eyes too... One of the many things I love about Shinee is how deeply they feel whatever they're performing and how every member commits himself 1000% to expressing the song. It really does feel like a privilege to me to get to watch them. Jonghyun is an extraordinary lyricist and composer. It just breaks me sometimes - as if that voice and everything he can do with it (not to mention his stage presence) weren't enough, he created masterpieces of words and music.
If you have a chance you should watch Onew's version of this song he sang on the variety show "Sea of Hope." It's a very powerful and emotional performance.
Onew singing Selene 6.23 on Sea of Hope is beautiful and heartbreaking. There’s a clip on RUclips of the duet alone but I think it’s worth seeing what happened just before he started singing for context. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/video/dARANVzMiU8/видео.html The clip starts at 13:14. I’ve seen other reactors react to it with no problems. Thank you for the reaction!
Yes, you're exactly right, SHINee loves music, they put their hearts into every performance, and it shows. I've got a suggestion you might like, but it comes with a "tissues might be needed" warning. It's concert footage of Onew and Jonghyun doing a duet called "Please Don't Go", this is the link: ruclips.net/video/h-Egdk8z8ms/видео.html. Even do it on your own time, if you don't react on line 😊
I recommend End of a Day live by Jonghyun. (just look for: Jonghyun - End Of A Day | Live Performance 1080p in you tube), it will melt your heart. I also recomen Taemin Black Rose the Stage.
The song is indeed personal cause jonghyun wrote the song. The emotion is just overwhelming

I recommend Shinee performances in the IU show. It really showcase their vocals. Also, everything Onew related in Sea Of Hope is just pure perfection.
