I hate the use of "Spicy" Latina, who the hell came up with that....
Black men
Niggas 🤢
What they said ^^
...
I thought it came from the fact that their food is spicy
Now that I’m older and more seasoned the proud family perpetuates a lot of stereotypes let’s not forget about the chang triplets
Yep the always smart asian charicatures not to mention the gross sisters they're unfeminine, aggressive, and work in parents land (field slaves) also if they always took money how come they never bought lotion
@@hadbetterdays8118 there was that one time they dolled one of the sisters up
oh i know
@@hadbetterdays8118 that shit was funny tho
@@hadbetterdays8118 there was literally an episode where one of the sister wanted to be more feminine so they helped her but liked the way she was before better.
I can remember Zoe, the skinny white girl was very liberal! Remember her mom was a civil rights attorney who sued the school so Penny can play football with the school’s team.
True, though I think it was her aunt
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254 yeah it was her aunt. Zoey's mom was a limo driver I think.
They should have expanded that episode into three parts.
Was that the episode where she wanted to play on the boys team? It's been so long, but I think I remember this one!
Zoe was a queen. And honestly the least toxic friend penny has had.
I’m black and going to school for animation I hope I’ll be able to make shows that display black people in ways people haven’t seen yet
check out Craig of the Creek. it's a good one, I promise.
Owl house is great too, the main character is an Dominican American. Aside from the representation, HER PERSONALITY IS SOOO SWEET HER CHARACTER IS SO LIKABLE 🤩🤩
@@nkm08 she isn't black I don't get why she is mentioned.
Good luck! Hope your college goes well! I also want to go to college for art.......😭😭😭 it’s not going well
Don't forget to build a social media following!
I loved this show growing up. As a Chinese-American guy it was cool that they had a Chinese-American guy as a love interest. Conincidentily, I ended up marrying a black woman.
Awwwwlll
Nice bro
Aw, that's beautiful ❤️
@CBT: I must have missed that episode.
@@chengliu872 Yea Disney Channel actually had a lot of Asian representation back then
I would have no problem with Dijonay if she wasn't the only dark skin black girl. Dark skins deserve better representation.
For sure. I’m glad the reboot looks like it will have positive representation for both light skin AND dark skin black women, and even feminine AND masculine women too. Dark skin black women get shit on so much, as do tomboy and butch black women. Presenting themselves differently or having dark skin doesn’t make them any less women.
What about Trudy’s sister (forgot her name, she was an actress) and Oscar’s cousin’s wife (Boonetta?)?
I agree with you. I've met so many dark skinned girls who are so beautiful!
Yea and the other representation is the gross sisters smh
Yea and just how they made her act. 🤔
One thing I hope they change is the Chang triplets. They were were really smart, had strict parents, they even knew karate. There was even stereotypical Chinese music playing in the background when they were on screen. It was uncomfortable watching them at times and if they're in the reboot, I hope they have more character instead of being smart and Asian.
Yeah definitely :/ It's a problem when the only example of minorities are their stereotypes. Both the Chang triplets and Dijonay representation problems could've been easily fixed with other similiar looking characters with vastly different personalities
@@seatheparade yeah and with all of the current problems going on with colorism and Asian hate crime, someone is gonna speak out about it and people will be mad
@@thatgirlwhoplaysviolin6365 It just makes so much sense to update the characters to have more dimension to their personalities and add new ones to show how different kinds people can exist within minorities, not only for representation which is important, but also for good storytelling. People are multifaceted after all! At least there's already a different side to Dijonay (poetry) that they can expand on. I hope they do the same for asian characters and also add more of them
To make matters worse, their skin tone was actually yellow and the way their faces were draw were like racist caricatures. Asian community deserved better.
why so sensitive
I honestly look at the proud FAMILY as a cartoon version of ONE ON ONE💯🤣🤷🏿♂️
Flex and Oscar are one in the same 🤣
Me too lmaooo
I feel so damn old just thinking about One On One😭

As a kid I laughed but I sometimes felt bad for Sugar Mama..... as an adult I see it much differently now. It was harsh.
I think that was the point.
Until the movie when she has Papi put some respeck on it
I couldn't STAND that!! But think about it that's what Spanish people do. They would talk about us in Spanish right in front of us. That alone should've been our motivation to learning it.
Not to mention that in the picture you showed with Dijonay’s family, all of the kids looked completely different. This made me think that they were trying to insinuate that the kids were from multiple different men. They were so bold about it smh.
Really? I just thought it was about how black families come from big households. I thought those were all his kids since people can look a different skin tone even though they share the same parents. That’s shocking I didn’t see it like this.
That wasent his intentions at all black ppl come in different shades even if you have the same exact parents
I thought that too, u know that Dijonay and her siblings came from different fathers, but no, they revealed in an episode that they DO have the same parents
@@user-yd2jb8xo9k sadly nowadays people find anything offensive
My siblings range from light skinned, to pretty dark. We all have the same dad, our family just has multiple shades to it!
Dijonay is the cartoon version of Kim from moesha....Kim was always trying to get hakeem and dijonay with sticky
Oh yessss true
I love Kim in the Parker’s she was way more developed than in moesha
@@iyonna161 i feel like they dumbed kim down and made her more boy crazy for the parkers

You're absolutely right!!! She is the cartoon version of kim parker. The only difference is they didn't make dijonay dumb.
I love how people love to call penny a colorist because of that one episode with the poetry jam as if dijonay hasn’t been the worst friend in every other episode and I’m starting to give Trudy and Oscar the side eye because they constantly make and belittle penny to hang with LaCienga when’s she clearly racist to an extent because they’re cool with parents

Why do dark skin women always have to be activists? There's already enough of that image out there. Keke Palmer's character can just be feminine, there's not enough feminine promotions for dsbw. There shouldn't always be something political or masculine attached to a dsbw's image. Why won't they use a light skin mixed or bw as an activist then? Oh that's right, colorism. Light skin black and mixed women are too feminine for that
@Cutelike Dolphins how is it not believable? I know plenty dsbw that are feminine and soft , and I know light skinned women who act like dihjonay. A behavior is not secluded to a skin color.
@Cutelike Dolphins I have a feeling you typed this intentionally to spark an uproar so I will not give you that satisfaction cos I don’t get offended by intentional motives meant to offend me so if this is what you think, okay
@Cutelike Dolphins from your face you don’t look very slim but you could be plus you must be sheltered or not in the real world. Loads of dusty light skin women they just get grouped in with dark skin women. Plus saweetie has been called a hoe by her black male worshippers for calling out quavo. Being a dunce for light skin is really a mental illness get your head checked before you make silly observations.

Are there ever any “loud and ghetto” and undesirable female characters that are light skinned or non black in TV?
I don’t think I can recall one. Like I see them in all shades in real life but on TV, they are always dark skinned. 🤔 I wonder why?
I wish the proud family offered a dark skinned girl who wasn’t shown like that (in addition to Dijonay) to balance it out.
Hillary from fresh prince wasn’t loud and ghetto but she was promiscuous and dumb, I hated how they showed her character.
Aunt Viv was portrayed in such a positive light, I wish more tv shoes would do that.
Riley from the boondocks was light skinned and he was pretty ghetto lol.
@@SakuraaaHarmony I honestly never got "ghetto" from hillary, she was portrayed as more of a classy, well dressed, rich but not that smart because they're rich type of person, she also seemed to enjoy fancy things and was a bit self centered
@@SKSK-qg1kn I said that she wasn’t loud and ghetto, but just not portrayed in the best light. She was made a joke out of on that show.

The only darkskin girl I remember that was “tasteful” was the radio host. I believe she was on the Hip-Hop helicopter episode but I remember I loved seeing her, I never knew why but now I do. I’ve always like Dijonay. I was always pretty chubby, and there was a stereotype of how fat characters were portrayed. I always saw Dijonay as confident. When this show came out I was struggling with an eating disorder at a very young age. It helped me a lot to see a fat character to act the way she did. Even though I’m not black I could still connect to her because of our body type and love of poetry. She has a lot of good characteristics that I hope get more attention in the reboot. I’m really hopeful for the future of the proud family because in the past they did bring up topics that weren’t often showcased in media. I hope they continue to do so while fixing/addressing past issues of the original.
I thought they were blue, because they were sad and had no friends. I thought it was to show most bullies are sad.
Why don’t they ever represent dark skin girls like me? First gen, slim, dark skin. For some reason light AND dark girls didn’t like me because they said I acted “white”. But guys found me attractive and I wasn’t the stereotypical dark skin girl that tried to befriend light skin girl

How is Dijonay so athletic and active yet she's still overweight? 🤨🤨
Being active doesn’t always equate to thinness. You can have a healthy lifestyle and still be big; you can have an unhealthy lifestyle and still be small.
She probably just has a poor metabolism. I know one of my boyfriend's buddies eats healthy and works out at the gym all the time like a body builder, but has the appearance of a black sumo wrestler. No matter what he does, he's stuck with an overweight body. So it possibly could be that.
It’s simply calories in calories out. Even if your metabolism is slow you can lose weight if you are in a caloric deficit. If you are active but eat way too many calories you will be fat. If you are active and eat the normal amount of calories for your body you will lose weight. If you are active and eat way less calories you will lose too much weight.
@@sissysovereign1294 This is no true, yes everyone has a body type, but if you’re reaching a certain goal you gotta make changes to your diet and what you’re doing is what cause you to stay where you are.
@@alexmcmiller9016 Not true, if you’re supposedly eating “healthy” and stuck at the same weight you’re probably doing something wrong or staying consistent at the weight such as over eating and not burning enough calories a day.
So many people don’t realize they’re over eating and not burning enough calories a day.
If you’re skinny and eating unhealthy it eventually catches up to you, I’ve been skinny my whole life up till recently and I’ve gained so much weight during the pandemic because I am not as active as I used to be....
Even people with health conditions have to maintain their diet such as thyroid and POCs, they have to be put on VERY strict or they just keep gaining weight rapidly.
What you eat, how you eat and how much you eat contributes to your weight loss or gain, it’s literally 80% of your eating habits and 20% is workout.

Cartoon Network came out with a show called Craig of the Creek back in 2018 that has a black boy named Craig as the protagonist, he has both his mother and father actively in the lives of him and his siblings. They’re all shown in a very wholesome way, the parents instill great & practical values in the children, and I think the best part about the show is that they also don’t deny or hide the blackness of the family. They still speak in AAVE from time to time and crack a lot of jokes the way I feel black ppl always do, lmao. Tyler the creator also made a cartoon for adults on adult swim that starts a black character as the protagonist who is very non-stereotypical as well, it’s called The Jellies and was started in 2015. Although the last episode aired in 2019, the show isn’t canceled it just hasn’t been renewed for a new season yet.
It’s an amazing show.
Yeah that show is great! I just want to see more positive shows like that created by black folks for black folks. We need more black folks in the animation studios and design firms so that we can be the ones to tell our stories. We can't always rely on other races to tell our stories.

I loved the proud family growing up. I can't understand why we have to bring everything back and reboot it or reconfigure it. Why not just create something original (maybe add some stuff that may have inspired you as a child), but create something new thats appropriate and applies to current issues in the community today. Instead of trying to revise the old. Or why not make it a continuation, they grew up had their own kids, but their kids are going through some different struggles or maybe some of the same. That way instead of having Dejoney "revamped" it can show that she grew, and led her life her way, not emulating her parents and the stereotypes forced on her. I feel like in real life we view things differently as we grow and we learn that what we grew up around may have worked, but doesn't mean it was productive. I feel like changing it completely with an explanation behind the scenes is not productive and leads to more wierd questions from kids, as opposed to showing on screen why the change in her happened making it flow more like a story. Idk I ramble and make no sense. Carry on without me.
I was waiting for this one
Dijonay is a fake friend

Lol I was just thinking about this show and then you post this haha love that
As much as I love the show, it definitely is colourist and I hope for the reboot that they change the narrative of Dijonay being “loud and ghetto”
Dijonay reminds me as of Kim Parker from “The Parkers” slightly dumb ghetto at times but has real artistic side & a good friend. She makes me laugh
I didn't watch The Proud Family a lot as a kid but I remember that Dijonay was known to be a very selfish and toxic friend to Penny kind of like a black version of Dodie from As Told By Ginger.
I can relate to Penny Proud so well, I am very sweet and smart like her, I have been bullied, fell in love with a boy, disagreed with my parents and sheltered.
So I’m not crazy for noticing this too! Thank you for this video sis!
What about Zoey? Isn’t she stereotype as a white girl being skinny like a twig, she’s not “hip”, but smart & dorky, or because she is white it’s just a personality trait?
I always wondered why we never saw her folks or dejonay's. I kinda want them to make Zoey biracial so that she can be more inserted into the communities and bring to light some discussion that leave them out of discussions. But her being a skinny nerdy white girl isn't bad, zoey was one of the few non problematic characters which is interesting to look back on now.
I wonder how Zoey and KeKe characters are going to interact. Zoey never dimissed her friends or pushed her being white as a thing. But the activist character coming into play makes me wonder what angles they plan to take.
@@halosandhorns8330 I feel Zoey’s race shouldn’t have to change to give her more communication with her black friends. By changing her to bi-racial doesn’t mean she knows exactly what black people are going through. That’s why mixed people struggle with identity, because by believing they have to fit by changing their character around certain races. I think Zoey just needs a new voice and it’s important for a white character to have that.
@@faboul467 Exactly it opens up those topics of discussion about acceptance, diversity, and unity. She will have depth too, cause not only would most people just assume she's white she know kinda has story behind why she's there. Not to say she cant just be a white girl who lived in the town,i just think that would add to the layout. She could still look exactly the same and we just find out later one of her folks is black or biracial themselves because again I don't remember seeing her folks like that, unless she's an emancipated teenager, i just think she deserves. Revamp and fresh take.

Dang. I loved this show and Dijonay was also my favorite character. I feel super ignorant not realizing she represents some stereotypes; I always thought she was just a quirkier character with a more “normal” chaotic home life, having to deal with multiple siblings (a little reminiscent to my white friends with a lot of young siblings). Then again, I was also pretty young watching this, like I’m sure many others were, and then grew up, rewatched, and thought, “Hey, wait a sec-“
At first I was a little confused because in the first half of the video you kept saying "Yes girls like Dijonay exist but you gotta be careful. Yes they exists but you gotta be careful. I'm excited too I hope they show have them act the same but more developed. I never had an issue with the characters as they are because it felt real to me as I have met people that was like this. Penny was already developed character in the beginning so I hope the give the other characters the same amount of developmental love.
Take what I say with a grain of salt but...as a white kid living in the bubble of a nice suburb....I LOVED this show. There were so many things I never experienced before that I was able to through this show. I loved the characters, and went out of my way to watch it. I really really want to see more cartoons show different families beyond the white suburb family. We got plenty of that, it's good to allow kids to see that different people have different experiences, but all are valid. It gives kids a chance to learn things that they may not otherwise be exposed to, and see life through someone else's eyes.
That being said, honestly I find it ridiculous that they don't ever seem to have a black main character actually be...well...dark. They are all fair skinned for being dark, even in live action they seem to prefer lighter black actors and actresses. I would like to see more color diversity for sure, and to show that being really dark isn't a negative trait, just one that some people are born with.
I honestly love the proud family. Problematic and all. Colorism, stereotypes are detrimental to the black community. I still love the show, especially in times when everyone is so sensitive about everything. (Not the colorism, but the stereotypes)
Me too. I was happy to enjoy this show and see some black animation. Even with the colorism, We still had so many other shows that show showed us diffrent. I can't spend all my time upset at one show.
Same here it’s a great show.
The show definitely has some great messages and episodes, but I'm just sick and tired of all the negative messages and stereotype embedded in shows meant for black folks. Why can't our shows just be positive representation like the shows for white and non-black folks? Look at how successful Encanto was at portraying Colombian culture and family issues in a powerful, positive way. Why can't we get shows and movies like that without all the colourism, stereotypes, etc? Black Panther was years ago! We need more!
Gasped when I saw the title cause I was excited to watch ❤️
I really enjoyed this video. The Proud Family was such a good show to me when I was younger because it was funny and there were a lot of stereotypes but like you said that was part of the show. I also know Dinoneys but they’re also so awesome so I think The Proud Family show keep its comedy but also just tackle these characters in not just a stereotypical way. There should be a balance because it’s comedy was what made it awesome too!!
Djonay having her tummy out being considered more "ghetto" was bad but the gross sisters being blue and brutes and bullies and completely unfeminine while having more traditional black hairstyles doesn't sit well with me at all looking back.
Since when does being ashy make you blue?
If you research, it was concluded that the gross sisters were dipicted blue because they were ashy. And that is a negative connotation/stereotype towards dark skins to make them appear ugly.
@@emiemilia6219 yeah thanks for repeating what she said in the video. My question still remains
I heard it because their skin were soo dark is why they appear blue but idk 🤷🏾♀️
Them two songs at the end tho🔥🔥🔥
Nice video. I was on the defense because of the title. But then the way you delivered I stopped and actually listened. My view definitely has been moved a bit. I appreciate you. Keep up the good work!!!!
I laughed when she said “paprika”😂
Am i the only one that got the vibe that many of the characters of the Proud Family were based off of characters in the Bebe’s Kids universe? Dijonay reminds me of the girls following Jamika and Robin around the theme park.
Yup , plus the animation style.
When I was a kid I never understood what was off about D'jionay, you put it perfectly
Well said sis! 😌👏🏾
The proud family has had plenty of tough conversations: homelessness, racism, islamaphobia/xenophobia, abusive relationships, black history month and Kwanzaa, jealousy, homophobia, effects of divorce...need i go on?
Wait homophobia
@@katanaonika816 yea. They didn’t say it outright. They used the term “sissy” instead. With Michael
The solution is simple. Have 2 dark skin characters on the show. One of them a stereotype, the other one a positive role model. It'd be a way of both acknowledging that "Dijonays" exists in the black community, while at the same time showing that other dark skin women also exist.
This
Exactly! It's not that hard!
loving the new introo
This was one of my all time favorites growing up I hope it does well
Why is nobody talking about the chang triplets?
I'm mean you do have the show Craig Of The Creek that stay on Cartoon Network and yes we do need more black cartoon shows like The Proud Family, Static Shock and or The Boondocks (even though it is a adult cartoon show) and to be honest, I'm not gonna lie because I'm didn't pay attention that the gross sisters are ashy in the show when I'm watching it when I'm was young lol
In the 90s we had Cbear and Jamal, Waynehead, Bebe Kids,, The Pj's and those HBO black history specials.
@@nlee4566 that is true and don't forget Little Bill also
I loved this show growing up!
YES...that's RIGHT! We BEEN know'in this cartoon is colorism...when it FIRST came out! No one listening then. THANK you for recognizing this!
Exactly::: it was the only childrens show exemplifying black children and families and they 100% could have done better when portraying the individual characters. Love the acceptance the girls show each other and others. I think introducing more black girls who DONT serve into stereotypes would make others happy too.
Its sad but true...
What you said at 7:24 was so true, there was this one white guy named Brad that would always hang out with me and my girl friends. Our friend group grew to having two other african American guys so he's not the only guy in the group anymore.
Be we will se what direction the show will go in. I think people can change and grow from stereotypes, we just have to wait.
Am I the only one that saw eddy from that's so raven in the guy dijonay flort with?
It was a funny show but was colorist. I didn’t even realize it that’s so crazy
I watched all of this, & many other t.v shows! I’m glad I remember the deleted episodes too. It definitely influenced me
This show is a pop off,A LEGEND THAT SHOULD NEVER EVER BE FOR👏🏿GOT👏🏿TEN👏🏿
