I don't mind that Relient K is changing their sound, they have been for a while. Everyone grows up and matures. They also have to keep up with the times, so to speak. I'll always love their old stuff, MMHMM will always be my favorite album, but I'm very excited about Collapsible Lung too!
Matt said the band wanted to surprise themselves and that this was a one time thing. The group was VERY pleased with the result. Also majority of songs are based off their own lives or experiences they have had and it all ties in with the opening and closing song on the album. Matt assured that they would return to their usual style with the next album though.
"In an interview, band leader Matthew Thiessen said that the album is more of a pop album, because he felt it needed to be written. He went on to say, "That being said, our next album will definitely be a rock record. Maybe even punk rock, who knows?" Relient K is going to do everything.
I love that! :D I'll definitely have to listen to this album. Been a fan of them since the very beginning, but when this album was released I'd given up on them. After starting this trend this year where I listen to almost the entire discographies of newer bands whose songs I've fallen in love with this year (like Real Friends), I think it's time for me to pick up where I left off and listen to Relient K's most recent stuff, and go back all the way til I hit the last album I remember (The BIrd & The Bees Side).
Relient K songs have always centered around the lyrics, not the style of music. Sometimes those are melancholy, spiritual, or just plain goofy, but they are always witty. This album has fulfilled that expectation so far, and I can't wait to hear the rest of it.
It's 2022 and I'm still loving this. I LOVE how versatile Relient K is. Any genre they want to put out, I'm going to love it. I've been a fan for 20 years now and that isn't changing anytime soon!
I really don't know what those people complain about! These guys ALWAYS makes GOOD and NEW music! Every new album is like they're reborn again. So, just be thankfull that they exist and listen to the great music they create! Period.
what is great about Relient K is that they sing about what is going on with them at the moment, and this album is about finding someone special. It;s an album about hope, especially since Forget and not slow down was about just trying to keep moving forward after a breakup
Well guys, it's definitely different. It may not be the genre of music I love and it may be a little different from your older songs but you all are sounding amazing! No matter what I'll always be loyal to Relient K and you can be sure I'll be picking up my copy of Collapsible Lung as soon as it's released!
Yes, many of their songs are about girls too. They are allowed to do that. They can sing whatever they want (as long as it's not ungodly) and still glorify God. I'm afraid you're just being legalistic. The lead singer, Soul Glo, once said, "There's only one type of love that brings out a passion like this and it's the one Jesus Christ showed. He came down to Earth and died for us on the cross and rose again on the third day. That's a very bold act. We're trying to make Christ-like passion alive.
agreed. "forget and not slow down" was like catharsis for matt t. who was getting over an engagement that ended terribly. birds and the bee sides felt more like an experimental album/bee sides thing, especially allowing the other members to each have their own song. it was neat, but not a typical "album." this is definitely RK doing their usual thing. its more them than the last two. i can't wait for this album to come out!
I'd like to mention that Relient K tends to have a different sound for all their albums (Bird and the Bee Side was a bit country, Mmhmm waskinda pop rock-ish, Is for Karaoke had a traditional pop/rock in keeping the song like the original but still adding their own twists, etc.) SO let them try new things. They have fun, and I have fun listening to them try out new things like this. I'm really excited for their new upbeat type pop sound and I can't wait to hear the whole album.
Relient K knows their fans well! Matt and Matt always seem to know which direction to go, they haven't had an album flop yet. I appreciate their consistency! As a band, always putting out music the fans enjoy isnt always an easy task.
Jasper and blue are so adorable! I've been a Relient k fan since 2005 and I'm not going any where this song is so catchy!!! Can't believe they co wrote with Matt Musto.
One of my favorite things about RK is that they are always evolving. None of their albums sound the same and they're not afraid to change as they themselves change. It's awesome :) Love you guys!
am I the only person who grows with this band? I used to only listen to punk christian and Relient K was my favorite band. When I got into heavier stuff, they released mmhmm. Then I got into high production piano music like Coldplay and MUTEMATH, and Relient K released 5 Score. It was perfect. Then I got into more indie music like Death Cab and Sufjan. Relient K released FANSD. Perfect! Now I've grown to appreciate insanely catchy pop music. Relient K dominates again! Relient K is loyal.
I think I'm gonna wait to hear this one in it's entirety before I decide if I like it or not. I really want to hear the cohesiveness that listening to a album start to finish provides.
I have been seeing too many negative comments about bands and their sounds lately. Here, Sleeping With Sirens' new music, The Maine... I love all these bands, and changing their sound does not make them "bad" or "sellouts." Bands write and create the music that they desire to put out there, no matter what fans may think or say. They are developing a sound. You can't expect each album from an artist to sound exactly the same, that'd be pointless. I honestly can't wait for the rest of this album.
Posted on Wikipedia: "In an interview, band leader Matthew Thiessen said that the album is more of a pop album, because he felt it needed to be written. He went on to say, "That being said, our next album will definitely be a rock record. Maybe even punk rock, who knows?"" So shut up and enjoy this song and the new album. :)
When I first heard Matt was going to do a pop album, I was really scared for rk and how I would continue to view them. I've come to realize that anything these guys write, no matter the genre, always leaves me impressed. I've never been a fan of pop music, but this is wonderful and I can't wait to hear the whole album.
I was ready to dismiss Relient K for not sounding like their previous albums, the punk rock feel, the angst or the lack thereof after just listening to previews in iTunes. I was on the verge on hating them forever when I realize this IS the Relient K I grew on and loved about... Matt's God-given talent on song writing, the band's chemistry and desire to try new things beyond their genre, not to mention their maturity are what re-defined my love for the band.
I think they made this album for fun. The last album was very personal and emotional. I think they are making this album to reach out to more people and get more fans. You can kind of get the direction they are going in by listening to "No Reaction" on Birds and the Bee Sides. I understand why a lot of fans are worried, but it's been a while since RK have made a fun album. Don't get me wrong, I adore their last few albums, but it's nice to hear them make songs you could hear on the radio.
Honestly Relient K can play any style of music such as punk christian, pop and theres just something about it thats so different than other songs of that style but it just sounds so natural. What I'm saying is you could give them a lot of different types of music choices and they'll make it sound like thats what they were meant for. Long live Relient K
They're obviously doing something right since they haven't fallen off the radar like most bands that have a lifespan of a few years now. I agree you with you on Forget and Not Slow Down completely.
Ah, okay. I haven't heard the other songs from this album, save Don't Blink. They're my favorite band too. This album, with how pop it is, is definitely different, but I like it so far. The tunes are very catchy. I think it's cool that they're exploring different genres. Looking forward to it as well as the next rock album!
I wish there was just a hint of rock in this song like in "Don't Blink" but I am still so excited for this album. I like that Relient K doesn't make all the same albums but they're still good.
This album feels like a grower. It'll take time to get used to it, but I'll love it just like everything else. And I can definitely hear classic K in this, especially in the melody.
Mentioning sex or having a hint of it in the theme shouldn't at all be a reason to be sad/disappointed. Struggles are good to mention, And the fact that Matt doesn't embellish this but rather notes his "wandering" "like a stray" and his "lost" state is admirable. I'm glad that he's being real.
I can't wait for the album after this one, if it becomes more rock for sure. For now, I'll keep on listening to their old stuff. Sometimes bands have to record different stuff and I understand.
I agree the old sound was better but this stuff is cool too. Relient K is a very versatile band. Found this little gem on wikipedia: In an interview, band leader Matthew Thiessen said that the album is more of a pop album, because he felt it needed to be written. He went on to say, "That being said, our next album will definitely be a rock record. Maybe even punk rock, who knows?"
I preferred the deep meaningful stuff that had an impact, but I still like this. These guys pretty much saved me from depression a long time ago at college. I'm not complaining, I still have a high opinion of them because of it.
much like the new feel of Don't Blink, this song is slowly growing on me. can't wait to be singing the whole album in the car music video mode this July.
I love relient k... And this is deffinately a new sound for them. I was trying ti figure out if i like it, when i realized my foot was tapping... I love it. Good job relient!!! Love the new sound. Keep em coming.
I agree, the whole album has some prodigal elements to it, you have to listen to the whole album in context of collapsible lung. A lot of regrets, but he recognizes them as such.
It's good for a band to experience different avenues in music. It shows their willing to do whatever to become better musicians. Even though this new album might not exactly fit my taste in music; It still is Relient K and I know it will be good.
Even if it is more poppy than their albums before, I think that's fine. This song is so catchy, just like all their work. Forget and not slow down was very dark and somber, this is lighter and pleasent. Seriously loving this song, no matter what. Relient K is and always will be my favorite band. They could put out a freaking rap album and I'd still buy it.
Perfect. As always. RK until i die..being #1 of Best Bands. Mr. Hoopes, does that kid even know how much his dad rules? He probably doesn't even know!!
've read some reviews about this and I have to agree. The review said that it seemed horrible but after a while they went back and found they liked it a lot. I have to agree. It may not be my favorite Relient K song but I am beginning to like it. And from the stuff I have heard live off this album (Collapsible Lung and Boomerang) I really cannot wait
I like the three songs I have heard that will be on this album. Why some of you might ask? Well because it shows they aren't those boys from mhmmm but that they have grown and have gone through experiences in life and they aren't perfect. It shows how human they really are and that they will make mistakes but that as long as they find their way they'll keep changing. I loved their old stuff since I was in elementary but I'm 20 now almost 21 and I can relate to how much I have changed like them.
That story fits my life. Except for the pop. I will always be loyal to Relient K, which is why it's ok with me if this album isn't my favorite.I will still buy it and support my favorite band ever! Besides, FANSD still blows my mind every time I listen to it.
This album is a nice break from the extreme emotional depth of they're last album (which was amazing) just as people have many emotions so should music! Good job guys!
I like the beat...not sure how I feel about some of the lyrics. Besides Matt's vocals, it didn't feel like a Relient K song. You guys change your sound a lot and I LOVE that about you. But it's always still felt like the Relient K that I love dearly. I don't hear you so much in this particular song, but I'd be willing to bet that it will grow on me and I will soon be dancing around with my headphones on, listening to this song. I love you guys!
They've been getting more secular and I like it. And like..this song makes me immensely happy. (The entire album does, actually) It is a feel-good, dance around your bedroom wile attempting to whistle along kind of song about falling in love and that's the stuff I need right now. Things change, bands change direction and styles get tweaked, and there's no use in griping about it. You're just going to make someone pissed and fill the comment section with unnecessary blathering.
As far as pop goes, I think Relient K does a fantastic job. And while I am not really into their lyrics now as opposed to what they used to be, it's still a lot better than all the other pop in the world. I'm fine with them experimenting for this album, but I just really hope they go back to pop punk/ punk rock/ alternative rock next album. I never go a day without I So Hate Consequences, Be My Escape, and Devastation and Reform :)
Forget and Not Slow Down, you'll remember, also didn't sound like anything they'd done before. But I will agree with you that it's by far their best. I love that album!
I've been a huge fan of you guys for a long time. I have every single album, EP, or single you guys have ever come out with. Your music and lyrics have helped me through so much in my life that I could never thank you enough. Now, I'm not sure what I think about this... I feel like it's way to Pop compared to the original Punk style I've loved for so long, but, regardless, being such a huge fan of you guys still makes me excited about the new album. Please don't disappoint me! Much love~
I don't mind that Relient K is changing their sound, they have been for a while. Everyone grows up and matures. They also have to keep up with the times, so to speak. I'll always love their old stuff, MMHMM will always be my favorite album, but I'm very excited about Collapsible Lung too!

The people who didn't like this album... *sigh* The piano interlude just before the last chorus... CLASSIC RELIENT K, it's my favourite. :D
I love that! :D I'll definitely have to listen to this album. Been a fan of them since the very beginning, but when this album was released I'd given up on them. God, I fucking love Relient K & I HAD NO CLUE THIS WAS EVER RELEASED THREE YEARS AGO!! WHERE HAVE I BEEN?? FAM, CAN YOU FORGIVE ME??
shut up you dont know what you´re saying
This could be a good wattpad story plot.
HELL YES
Porferia Sabandal I WOULD SO READ IT
"As long as I'm staying true to myself, then out isn't something I can sell."
It's 2022 and I'm still loving this. I LOVE how versatile Relient K is. Any genre they want to put out, I'm going to love it. I've been a fan for 20 years now and that isn't changing anytime soon!
nah aint gonna transform into a bedroom ventilator?
I'm in love with the dog almost as much as I love Relient K and this song.

My only complaint is it's so catchy that I can't wait to hear more

Footloose fancy free XD -2018- Hoopes son is so cute

I appreciate their consistency! As a band, always putting out music the fans enjoy isnt always an easy task.
I'm glad this doesn't sound EXACTLY like any other RK album. Each album is different. We have ourselves a truly original band here, people.
Relient K is very flexible and amazing!!!
I'm eternally thankful that God gave you such talent and that you're using it right... ^_^
Keep it up!
Words cannot describe how excited I am about this album.
Let's all forget the past Relient K and look at this song by itself and then see if we like it
Really looking forward to the rest of the album. HUGE Relient K fan. Alternative, Rock, punk, or pop, Relient K will be awesome. SO talented.
Honestly I think this is going to be their best album since Five Score and Seven Years Ago, which is my personal favorite.
relient k is the best band ever. i am very impressed with this album. i have been a fan since my bro showed me when i was 3.
Jasper and blue are so adorable! I've been a Relient k fan since 2005 and I'm not going any where this song is so catchy!!! Can't believe they co wrote with Matt Musto.

A true Relient K fan speaks.

Thank you. It was their best. This album doesn't even come close.
I memorized this song about en minutes after I heard it for the first time. I love it!

I was really worried about this new album, but you reassured me Matt knows what he's doing.
Yes, this is long time coming. So happy to hear some new sounds! A tour visit to the Uk would top it off!

I am about to turn 19. Fell in love with my first RK album at age 7. Love all their stuff!
Ah, okay. I haven't heard the other songs from this album, save Don't Blink. They're my favorite band too. This album, with how pop it is, is definitely different, but I like it so far. I love these guys, I'm 23 and I've been listening since I was 16. The guys from relient k are truly amazing
Anything Matt Thiessen sings is going to be amazing. I love this style for them!
Can't wait till the full album comes out! Relient K rocks
I wish there was just a hint of rock in this song like in "Don't Blink" but I am still so excited for this album. I like that Relient K doesn't make all the same albums but they're still good.

Thank you! That's exactly what I've been trying to tell people, but you said it better than I ever could have!
I can't wait for the album after this one, if it becomes more rock for sure. For now, I'll keep on listening to their old stuff. Sometimes bands have to record different stuff and I understand.

Relient K is amazing. I love everything they do and will ever do. They can play a wide variety of genres and play them well! Impressive.
EXACTLY! Not only does it sound different than any other, but it sounds good too! Can't wait for July 2nd, I'm buying this album immediately.
I love relient k... And this is deffinately a new sound for them. I was trying ti figure out if i like it, when i realized my foot was tapping... I love it. Good job relient!!! Love the new sound. Keep em coming.
Totally agree! I happen to really like this new style.
wow, i just heard Candlelight on the radio and was wondering what Relient K was up to. great timing

5 seconds into the song:
*like*
Thank you sir for actually understanding its okay for bands to change styles if they want to, and no one is forced to like it,
Perfect. As always. RK until i die..being #1 of Best Bands.
Mr. Hoopes, does that kid even know how much his dad rules? He probably doesn't even know!!
I cant wait for the new album to come out! Such a different sound for them but still very Relient K.
Sounds pretty good! Can't wait for the full album.
Scary when your favourite band puts out music you wouldn't listen to if they weren't your favourite band. Please let the album be better !
I love this song, but seriously...Matthew Hoopes has an adorable child.
i love this song! i really enjoy the whistling , this is going to be a great summer jam!
I like the three songs I have heard that will be on this album. Why some of you might ask? Well because it shows they aren't those boys from mhmmm but that they have grown and have gone through experiences in life and they aren't perfect. CAN'T WAIT TILL THE NEW ALBUM!
Loving the sound difference...not that I hated the sound before at all, but this is amazing. Can't wait for the whole album!
Sounds like Relient K to me *shrugs*
I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS. So excited for the new album.
2019
That story fits my life. Except for the pop. I will always be loyal to Relient K, which is why it's ok with me if this album isn't my favorite.I will still buy it and support my favorite band ever! Besides, FANSD still blows my mind every time I listen to it.
This album is a nice break from the extreme emotional depth of they're last album (which was amazing) just as people have many emotions so should music! Good job guys!

I don't hear you so much in this particular song, but I'd be willing to bet that it will grow on me and I will soon be dancing around with my headphones on, listening to this song. I love you guys!
air for free brought me here because this is also a great album all RK stuff is the best
haha same! I'm 21 and I've been listening since I was a teenager.
One of the reasons I like relient k is because they have many different sounds that are all amazing
This is a great birthday present :) thanks RK!
You were right! I got mixed up there for a second, but Collapsible Lung sounds a lot better already. Thank you.
I love this album! Love all the songs! I don't know what the big fuss is about.
I miss the old Relient K
Air for free is going to be amazing. Like amazing.
If you want classic reliant k check out their new song candy hearts, it has that great reliant k feel to it
So pumped for the new album
I've grown a liking to more pop music as well. You are more than right on your part, sir!
I just want to say, that fuzzy actor was amazing!
I love all of their albums, but oh man am I excited for a non-breakup themed album :)
this album is going to be soooooo AWESOME
As far as pop goes, I think Relient K does a fantastic job. And while I am not really into their lyrics now as opposed to what they used to be, it's still a lot better than all the other pop in the world. I'm fine with them experimenting for this album, but I just really hope they go back to pop punk/ punk rock/ alternative rock next album. I never go a day without I So Hate Consequences, Be My Escape, and Devastation and Reform :)
I love it, its new, its fresh. Relient K is trying to keep up with their own twist, and its very nice.
Forget and Not Slow Down, you'll remember, also didn't sound like anything they'd done before. But I will agree with you that it's by far their best. I love that album!
GREAT STUFF!!! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE ALBUM!!
Much love~
