    I feel sorry for Shatner in one way. He never got to experience Captain Kirk as a child. He can only listen to people describe what it meant to them. As a young boy the show first started in re-runs and Captain Kirk was THE MAN! The ultimate power fantasy for a child... on the ultimate adventure.

    I loved Star Trek: The Motion Picture! Saw it twice on opening day and at least ten times after at the theater. Now, when I need a Star Trek fix, I think of watching Wrath of Khan or Search for Spock or Voyage Home. But I always end up going to TMP! I just love it. I’ll replay the scene when Scotty takes Kirk on the exterior tour of the Enterprise, that wonderful, slow, lingering beauty shot (like science fiction pornography) over and over. // I’d like to see the Ben Bova part of this interview! He was editor of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, a Hugo-winning science fiction writer, and editorial director of Omni magazine. Amazing man!

I don't believe even Bill Shatner knew why the series was so successful when it became a worldwide phenomena. I am a Trekkie and I believe that it has the believe ability factor and great scripts that explored the human condition. Plus add a great crew and set it in outer space.

      It was the first new Star Trek material in 10 years. Fans were so excited that the cast and story was simply "back", most didn't care that the story line wasn't that good. Too much detail was paid to special effects and not enough to script and story. Still and all, I enjoyed the movie when it came out in '79 (I was 14 at the time).

    He was actually a very good actor on most of TOS. Although his exaggerations would come acrross nutty when in the extreme, on balance his ability to express a variety of emotions actually takes a great deal of effort. He put more character into the simplest of lines - much more so than Stewart - who, despite being a better actor, came across rather dry and boring unless given better material.

    • @srs5933
      @srs5933 5 лет назад +6

    Having spent several days watching clips of Glenn Gould speaking in interviews and his own television programs, I see similarities in the way Shatner speaks. I wonder if I'm picking up some Canadian mannerisms ... not just inflection and accent but the style of speaking.

    This is interesting in hindsight. "I don't want to do a series" - he started TJ Hooker about two years after this. Kind of funny watching Boggs ragging on WPIX, which broadcast Star Trek in NYC, for "chopping up the episodes." I think Boggs was on Channel 5, which became Fox. Some interesting stuff, but my overall impression is that Shatner was (rightly) bored doing promotional work for STTMP.

    The thing he said about the submarines and keeping your crew at arm's length - this is so important to TOS. This is why the reboots failed - there was a staggering lack of professionalism in those movies and I wish I have never seen them.

    It's interesting that Shatner didn't know what his character had been up to for the 5 years between the end of the series and the launch of the new Enterprise. I wonder if a back story exists?

      It was 1.5 years and he was driving a desk at Starfleet HQ. If you want a semi-canon story about it read some of the Trek novels depicting that era. He got married as well. His wife was supposed to be one of the people who died in the transporter malfunction toward the beginning of the movie. The other was the Vulcan science officer he was given by Starfleet command. Btw, under Kirk, the Enterprise completed not one but TWO five year missions before Kirk was kicked upstairs, so to speak.

    Elvis has intensely loyal fans world wide. When he appeared in Vegas people flew in from all over the world. Even dead his fans are still loyal. People that were born after his death have become fans. Not many, if any, other person can make the same claim. I am a fan of the original Star Trek show but not as much as an Elvis fan.
