Who knew he would be doing interviews in 2024, 93 years old. What an amazing man. When this was filmed, I wasn't born yet and he was my age now. My hero.

+thanksfernuthin Paraphrasing here, but Margaret Thatcher pre-recorded a message in case she was not able to appear or speak (period) if Ronald Reagan died. She said something like, "We have one beacon to guide us that Ronald Reagan never had. We have his example."

This is a great interview. Shatner is very candid and authentic. I really get the sense that he has difficulty grasping what his character, his creation, meant to so many people and of the enduring influence he and the other members of that cast had on people's lives and our culture.
I have to say, this is an awesome interview. The questions are good, the audience participation was cool, and Shatner was charming and modest, which is not necessarily how he is portrayed by his contemporaries. Well done.
Hmmm.. Boggs is 4 yrs older than Conaway and 21 yrs older than Ferrell - so maybe Ferrell is the love child of Conaway and Boggs... Seems more likely :-)

I loved Star Trek: The Motion Picture! Saw it twice on opening day and at least ten times after at the theater. Now, when I need a Star Trek fix, I think of watching Wrath of Khan or Search for Spock or Voyage Home. But I always end up going to TMP! I just love it. I’ll replay the scene when Scotty takes Kirk on the exterior tour of the Enterprise, that wonderful, slow, lingering beauty shot (like science fiction pornography) over and over. // I’d like to see the Ben Bova part of this interview! He was editor of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, a Hugo-winning science fiction writer, and editorial director of Omni magazine. Amazing man!

He was actually a very good actor on most of TOS. Although his exaggerations would come acrross nutty when in the extreme, on balance his ability to express a variety of emotions actually takes a great deal of effort. He put more character into the simplest of lines - much more so than Stewart - who, despite being a better actor, came across rather dry and boring unless given better material.
Agreed. He was a perfectly decent actor 90% of the time. Did some great stuff on TOS. He only got really hammy when asked to overstretch himself and that really is down to the director's nous - or lack of.

You can tell that Shatner was already getting sick of Kirk at this point, the dilemma was that he earned the right as an actor to be a star with Kirk but was ashamed of all the Star Trek BS. It's just a job, he doesn't care.
Shatner- not just good looking but clever, funny, intuitive and sensual. By the way, I think women's chameleon-like ability is probably a biological advantage.
Bill Shatner was under a lot of pressure because he had known the script wasn't good and there were production problems during the making TMP. I don't believe even Bill Shatner knew why the series was so successful when it became a worldwide phenomena. I am a Trekkie and I believe that it has the believe ability factor and great scripts that explored the human condition. Plus add a great crew and set it in outer space.
+FortOmnicron54 It was the first new Star Trek material in 10 years. Fans were so excited that the cast and story was simply "back", most didn't care that the story line wasn't that good. Too much detail was paid to special effects and not enough to script and story. Still and all, I enjoyed the movie when it came out in '79 (I was 14 at the time).
It's interesting that Shatner didn't know what his character had been up to for the 5 years between the end of the series and the launch of the new Enterprise. I wonder if a back story exists?

Quiet diplomacy. History proved Shatner correct. A much more judicious person than Kirk.
