I dislike the change to Viashino because it ignores the diversity of one of Magic's few original species for very little gameplay effect. While most viashino are lizard-based, Capenna's are draconic and Alara's are crocodilian. It seems like it would be simpler and more faithful to just put "and Viashino" on whatever lizard typal cards they're making.

I continually appreciate Wheeler talking about the soul of the game and its degradation. It's obvious that across 99% of LRR content he self-censors in order to be peaceable and not squash anyone's enjoyment of the new, but it's so nice getting to hear someone who's so deeply involved in the Magic community voice their dissent. Just like with Spice, it's validating for a pretty big creator to share in your dismay. It so often feels like its longtime players alone endlessly arguing for the good of the game against newer players, WotC themselves, and content creators.

The only reason I don't like the "enters" change is because it gives designers more room for more words on these books they call cards. There needs to be a word budget on a pack of cards, and if there is one already, it needs to be much smaller.

yeah. they wouldnt have needed to shorten ETB to E if not for the fact they cant design a single card elegantly these days

I think saying that deprecating Viashino and Cephalid is "inconsistent" doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. Aven have been around for about as long and never got a creature type. Same with Leonin and Loxodon. The race/species names can appear in card names and flavor text without being in creature types.
With that said, I think the same logic should mean that Varmint probably shouldn't be a creature type either.

Fun deck! I made a raggadragga deck that also just turbo ramps...in commander though.

for that carnage tyrant slot, what do you think about cragplate baloth? Do you think it would be good enough at punching into control decks that it would offset it's badness in all other scenarios?

Errataing cephalid to octopus is fine so long as they also errata all humans to be apes

I enjoy the creature type errata and “enters” change.

Yeah, as I see it, the complaints that Cephalid aren't octopuses is kind of hurt by the fact that magic doesn't use unique creature types for all their animal humanoids. Leonin don't get a special creature type, why should Cephalid or Viashino?

I understand the practicality of the changes, and I think it can open up quirky new opportunities for deckbuilding. On the other hand, it feels like Magic's setting/IP matters less and less to the game as we see Universes Beyond grow to the extent it has and the way setting writing has gone by the wayside (due to organizational issues like the one-set block, still love the work being done by the actual writers). All kinds of settings have octopus people and lizard people, but cephalids and viashino draw specifically from the Magic setting. Seeing those names go feels like more of Magic's unique quirks getting filed off, and while it might improve it as a product, idk if it makes it better as a game or piece of fiction/art. Feels like something is lost!

Leonins have been Cats and Loxidon have been Elephants for literal decades. This isn't something new, and blaming it on products you don't particularly care for instead of seeing it as just a basic consistency pass that also has the added benefit of helping people build decks slightly easier illustrates everything wrong with the online MTG community.

@@flyingtoastr They literally acknowledged exactly your argument in their opening two sentences. They just shared an opinion afterward. You, who refuse to give credence to any disagreement, is what's wrong with the online Magic community.

Can't wait for human to be updated to ape. After all it's just consistent

German cards still read the equivalent of "comes into play" because the change to battlefield already was rather silly and didn't achieve anything worthwhile.
