    Question of the Day: What is something you love cooking in the oven?

  • @kathleenkline4622
    @kathleenkline4622 2 года назад +175

    I cooked in a RoadPro a lot when I drove truck. A favorite meal was a small beef roast with all of the veggies. Another was bbq chicken. Do wrap the top of the aluminum pan as it will not only keep the interior cleaner, but also retains heat better. If you're worried about the bottom of the oven getting too hot, set it on a small sheet pan...it will also catch any drips that may escape when bouncing on rough roads. Pretty much anything you can cook in a slow cooker can be cooked in a Road Pro!

    Being a former trucker's wife....I would make up little casserole dinners in the pans and freeze for my hubby. Meatloaf, fried potatoes, hamburgers, and you can get up , fix some eggs with veggies and make omelet. Boil eggs for 90mins while driving.

Covered it with foil opened it up about 3 hours later it looked freaking amazing

  • @chrisholds1

    Something that works pretty well is a variant of baked apples.
    Use whatever baked apple recipe that you like, but with this difference; chop the apples - instead of stuffing them - into approximately 2" to 3" cubes. mix with the other ingredients, saving any sugar or honey until last. Sprinkle the sweetener on top (the sweetener will slowly melt down into the ingredients during cooking). Add a couple of tablespoons of water or juice (apple or orange). Cover the tray tightly with foil, then bake for an hour.
    Try not to open the lid during cooking because these things are like crock pots. Every time you open the cooker, you lose all of the built up heat in the cooker and add 15+ minutes to the cooking time.

    Great review!
    Just saw another RUclipsr using one of these with slow Cooker liners.
    The liners wouldn't melt, slow cookers get the same temperature.
    Much easier cleanups, less waste.
    And a silicone loaf pan would replace the disposable aluminum pans.

      I have been using slow cooker liners on this particular trip that I’m on but on items that are looser it still is not recommended so for mixes like banana bread and things like that they still do recommend a pan.

    I have one, I use it mainly to warm leftovers. One tip to help with burning on the bottom of the aluminum pan is I use 2 stainless skewers, cut the length to fit the oven, put them in the bottom of the oven then put the aluminum pan on top of the skewers. They seem to really cut down on how much I burn.

    I have one. I love it. I've cooked salmon, meatballs, veggies, you name it. It does take a longer time to cook than if you use a regular oven. But for traveling, or sometimes on a jobsite, I'll put something in and at lunch time I have a hot meal. Some places that sell them sell cookbooks for them. I get my aluminum pans from one of the dollar stores or even Wally World. You do have to be careful of cooking food that creates steam. It hangs on the upper parts and when you open it, it will drip hot water.

    • @BunnyPlaysHere
      @BunnyPlaysHere  2 года назад +2

      I did notice that.. someone told me the best way to combat that is to unplug and let sit for a couple of minutes before opening. This allows the steam to chill a bit when being opened so you are less likely to have that initial contact. I don't know haven't tried it yet.. I just was very carful when opening it initially anyway....I found the dollar store to be great for the dishes but also will work with what I find near me so that might also mean a Walmart from time to time, but they seemed to have them in larger quantities for around $2-3 so that isn't bad.

    I've had one of these for 5 years...when I drove cross country in my 2009 VW Sportwagen, I used this to reheat pre-made, frozen wraps. I took them out of the main cooler in the morning and put them into an insulated bag so they could begin to defrost. They were wrapped in foil and I just popped them into one of those foil tins in the stove. Within about 40 minutes they were piping hot! A great hot lunch!! I plugged it into my cig lighter, and put it on the passenger seat floor...Was fabulous!!!! Loved your test of the power draw...planning to go out again and buy a power pack, so this is really helpful....Want to add a compressor fridge and would love to use a crockpot, too. Here's a tip...I do this at home, using a 1 + quart crockpot, the small size like the 12V units sold for the car. Spray the crock, put some sauce in the bottom, add DRY pasta..more sauce with maybe a bit of water to cover the pasta...then pile on your onions, zucchini, mushrooms, more sauce.....At home a throw a towel over the top...It cooks on HIGH for about an hour...and it's a great casserole...yummy!!!!!k Or, do it slower for about 6 hours or so and then it will stay warm if you cover the crock with a piece of Reflectix. Play it by ear and you'll learn the times as you experiment. I bet you could do it in a RoadPro....worth a shot!! OH..what was your final numbers on the power draw??

    I got mine for $20 a few years ago. It’s amazing! I bake muffins and cook chicken every day I’m driving more than 200 miles. I learned to put canning lid rings to raise my silicone bread pans above the direct heat. And add a little water.

    I love the fact that you used both the jackery and the 300watt one ,but it wasn't a fair comparison because you used different items to cook at different cooking times and even different temperatures.
    It was nice you used so many different items to cook and it thank you for mentioning the fact it wasn't going to burn through your floor panel,so now on a long run I know I can have my dinner done before I stop driving which is really nice. Thank you .

      I’m also wanted to use the two power stations just to show that they can work on both of the power stations themselves. A lot of people use this while driving down the road like I do primarily however some people do you want to know if they can run it off of the power station so I wanted to show the variety of different wattages To allow people to see that you could have a large power station or a small one and it will work. It wasn’t so much about comparing the cooking times as much as it was just showing that it can work and how much draw that it has

    It's the perfect size to use oven ready lasagna noodles in and make lasagna... You can bake biscuits.. You can make pork chops ,chicken breasts, Spanish race with ground beef, Chicken and dumplings, I do Is 2 pork loin chops. One large carrot chopped 1 potato chopped a quarter of an onion chop.. Add a couple tablespoons of cream on mushroom soup.. No extra water or broth is necessary because your meat gives off a lot of juices.. It's the same no matter what meat you use.. And you have a complete meal in about 2 hours.. If your chops are thick..

    Another trick you can use is buy a miniature loaf pans..... And you can cook 2 to 3 things at once.. A meat in one, vegetable in another and rice in another ..
    And if you want to bake potatoes in it make sure you poke your potatoes and then smear themlightly with veggie oil or butter and then put them in the bread pan... And I drove truck for almost 30 years before I retired and I still have my original one I bought in 1992... The only thing I've had to do is change the plug on it

      I’ve used foil on the bottom. I recently bought some thing that I haven’t tried yet. It is from the canning section of Walmart and it is used to put underneath the jars when you can. It is black and zigzag and round, made out of silicone. You don’t have to keep it round you can keep it in a straight line and it’s probably a half inch tall. Anytime you put something between the pan and the stove it causes a longer cooking time.

    I bought essentially the same thing from Canadian Tire: AutoTrends 12V Car Food Warmer. 3-L. My son is picking it up tomorrow, along with other camping goodies that I ordered, as I am too sick to drive. Such is life.
    Plus a pizza! He is a good man.
    I have silicon bread pans at home that might fit. But I'll still put the aluminium pans in, so I don't have to wash up on the road. The silicon pans have ridges for feet, so that should stop overcooking on the bottom.

    I take out my “mini vamper” on vacay with my toddler son, and he is a hot home-cooked meal kind of buddy! We have the hot logic that plugs in while we drive - I would have pre-portioned meals to cook from scratch and reheat. Worked great but I believe those only heat up to 165. This is an awesome option since it gets to a higher temp! I wonder how hot it gets as it’s plugged in to the van while driving…? But the bread option, phenomenal! Also seems a bit more “temperature safe” while cooking meats especially.

      I did see that when I was looking into the two I noticed that the people who were doing reviews online said that the hot logic is great for warming things or taking things from a frozen state into a warm stay to eat however for cooking meat and things more like thoroughly it would take a much longer amount of time. And they didn’t suggest it for that for that reason I went ahead and decided that this one was the right one for me. Same with the baked goods addiction... lol... I told Lady Bugout at Lolapalooza, what if we could make brownies.. neither of us had an oven though... now I could make a version of brownies!! That in itself is amazing!!! I am looking forward to those moments where something sounds good not having to say, ok let me go buy something precooked at a store and instead make it myself!! Hot out of the oven just tastes better sometimes!

      You are absolutely welcome! They had intrigued me each time that I passed them and finally decided it was time. I know everyone who’s on the road has different manners for which they’re able to cook and different means for which they are able to power so I wanted to share approximations of wattage and allow people to see that you don’t always have to have the biggest power system to be able to run something like this. I know this is going to be something that I share even more about in the future but this was my first impression and I’m super excited to get on the road and try it out more.

    Ive seen the road pros and wondered how well they worked. I was surprised the banana bread worked. Thats actually pretty awesome!
    I have to admit I was distracted from the road pro because I was admiring your cute basecamp. Is it a tiny house? I love the tin roof! Wouldnt it be awesome to have a tiny home community filled with other fellow van lifers?

    • @BunnyPlaysHere
      @BunnyPlaysHere  2 года назад +9

      Basecamp is super fun and cute and is in fact a tiny home. It has been a great place to return to from the road and enjoy time while editing and getting ready to hit the road again. Tiny living is much more efficient than having a big house that you simply don't use most of the room/features of daily!!

      @@BunnyPlaysHere I totally agree! I have been watching a channel called Incredible Tiny Homes. He is based in Newport TN. He is a builder but also has a tiny home community. Unfortunately all the lots are spoken for. So I will keep looking. More and more communities are allowing them which is awesome.

    • @BunnyPlaysHere

      @@mygypsyadventure3610 Even my little local community is starting to do a tiny home area here in Texas. I think that it’s great because a lot of times there’s so much wasted space within the home and so often we pay a huge price point for area that we’re not even using. Maybe I am partial because I feel like life should be more about experiences versus just the things and stuff but at the same time I’m excited that people are starting to get on board

Everything you made looks like it could be very easy to prepare. And those brussels sprouts looked very good. Would you mind sharing your recipe for all of us who missed the ingredients?

    • @BunnyPlaysHere
      @BunnyPlaysHere  2 года назад +13

      Absolutely I can share a little bit of this I just change up the recipe from time to time so on this particular instance I used the Brussels a little bit of fresh garlic balsamic and then Mrs. Dash salt and pepper and curry powder. Just a little bit though also a tiny bit of paprika and powdered onion. Sometimes I also substitute in finally chopped onion and it is delightful the little crispies of the onions make for a delicious flavor

With my current RidgeMonkey I can also make muffin mixes and things like that but I have the same problem in those instances where I have to cook two separate dishes and in this one that would mean quite a bit of a time investment however for other desserts that are in smaller portions that would be perfect

    As you said , coupling while driving down the road while hooked to your 12v system is bests. Just set your timer and pull over or put in on the assented seat to check when it’s done.
    When hooked into a power base, I always have a 1/2 gal double wall insulated container of piping hot water available to pre heat refrigerated or defrost frozen dinners (placed in ziplock bags). That way you are not using your precious power base to defrost frozen food. Cooking time is also decreased.
