The very first bike I ever rode was a 72 kawi 350. It was found in a dumpster by my buddy's girlfriend's father in pieces. Took 6 months to get it back together and running, but it was the 2nd best experience of my high school years ( you can probably guess what #1 was, not going into detail here ).
My brother Has the same bike but it’s a 1983 & it’s an awesome bike, fast, smooth & handles well. These Honda’s were way ahead of their time, great shaft driven bikes!
That V4 was one of Honda's best engines !! ... a good running Magna was hard to beat in those days !!
I love these old finds. My first bike was a 1980 red KZ440. I had a girlfriend in college who rode a Magna V45, find a Suzuki tempter an old CB 750 and it will bring me back to my rides with my college buddies. Great stuff

Sean, I'm so stoked to see this video. I helped my uncle move, and he gave me a 1982 Honda Magna V45, same color tank and side covers but mine has the high passenger back rest. This is my second street bike, I grew up in the woods on dirt bikes. My first street bike was a 1976 KZ900 bored and sleeved to something like 1,074cc and had a race cam in it. My Magna is in slightly better shape I think but I have it in pieces right now in the garage working on it. Can't wait to see how this bike turns out for you, once I get mine on the road I'll have to make the trip to PA! Love the videos and words of wisdom, keep up the good work. 👍
When I was a kid, I remember being on my dads 83 v45 magna. I remember the specific smell of the exhaust and the sound of her as she idled and had a bit of a whine to her. It was also extremely fast. I remember being about 6 or 7 when he took me on my first over 100mph ride. He topped her out at about 140mph. Scariest ride of my entire life lol.
I had that same bike, bought mine used in 1985. At the time it was one of the fastest bikes on the road, none of my friends I road with could keep up with me. The V65 was faster no doubt, but the 750 was lighter and handled better. I'm surprised that it was the first bike you road, I wouldn't consider it a beginners bike at all. Great bike I hope you get it running.
had one as well. kept blowing wiring harnesses, and instead of fixing it, the shop just kept replacing it. grrrr traded it in for a v65. NO regrets lol
Seeing the part with your son in it was so sweet it almost brought a tear to my eye. I have a 2yr old son that loves to sit on my $100 chinese 50cc scooter and dang i wish I could have a memory like you learning to ride on that bike and possibly some day he may get to also. Old Hondas have a diode that's notorious for going out when you're jumping the bike. You might want to check that
People jump them with the car on, you can’t do that with older bikes, gotta jump them with the car off.
This brings back some memories. My brother owns that very same bike. We picked it up from a shed where it had been sitting since 2003. It supposedly ran back then but some relative of the owner had removed and disassembled all 4 carbs (that's right folks, one per cylinder) and the carbs and linkages and airbox were all broken down in many many pieces and thrown into a plastic tub and a cooler, seemingly at random. That was a job. Of course you know what it takes to dial one in and how much it takes to cold start. We managed it somehow. It runs at this point but it needs a new throttle cable. That's going to be fun. We also recently picked up a 65 Mustang coupe that sat since 1991 so now there hasn't been much bike time.

I had a 1983 as my 1st road bike. Was a basket case, carbs off and had been dumped. Fixed the broken stuff and installed the carbs and with lots of smoke at 1st if fired up. Perfect 1st bike, mid controls were not the most comfy on the highway though. Hearing you turn it over was such a familiar sound.

over the summer I rescued a 1984 Honda magna v45 vf750. I found it in a barn after sitting for more than 10 years with fresh gas and fluids it fired right up. my first motorcycle.
I learned on the exact same bike in '87. Same color too! Very dependable bike that introduced me to the world of motorcycles. Since then, a Shadow 750, Evo and Iron-head Sportsters, now a 97 Dyna. You never lose the fever.
I have a 1980 Goldwing that was gifted to me, it has been sitting since 2009. I plan to get it running this spring. Thanks for providing some additional inspiration.
Our neighbor on Guam actually gave my dad a Magna when he moved off island to somewhere he couldn't take it because my dad had/has an old Triumph Trident and my dad tried to clean and retune the carbs and I guess destroyed the boots underneath and it'd never run again. So we ended up selling it for next to nothing to someone here in California after bringing it back stateside when we moved and I believe leaving it at my grandma's when we moved to Mississippi (gotta love the Air Force.) We had it about 3 years and I never heard it run. Fast forward about 20 years and I'd love to have one because those things with a good header sound AMAZING! They sound like a NASCAR engine if you have the right exhaust.. Those V4's are pretty amazing engines.. and being a Honda they are stupidly reliable and forgiving for a new rider.
My first street-legal bike was the 1994 Honda Magna, VF750C. LOVED IT! since then, I have been loyal to the brand, and the V4 Motor. Now I am on the Honda CTX1300 and I have the 2014 CB1100 too! Love your channel! I have been watching since the beginning!

I loved my 1983 V45 Magna! I bought it in Johnstown PA and took it with me to Georgia while I was in the Army. Many great memories.
One of the first bikes I ever rode was an 82 v45 magna too. So I found one a few years back and fixed her up. Most fun bike I own to this day! Nice find!
Nice find. I am a Honda V4 fan from the day they hit the showroom floor. I would be happy to share knowledge with your mechanic if he needs any help. He can reach me thru our website www.billysoutback.com. We do Honda V4 carb rebuilds and carb kits as a side biz. I am not trying to drum up biz, we stay quite busy during riding season as is but I love the Magna in all 3 sizes and generations and if I can help keep one out of the junkyard I will consider it a successful day. That bike is absolutely a runner with a little effort. It is a freaking Honda. They will outlast cockroaches during the nuclear apocalypse.
Pull the seat and look for the hose running from the back of the carburetor plenum to a plastic tank (spooge tank, PCV system). Pull the hose and spray gasoline or just a propane torch unlit to crank and fire it off.
No spark... If it is one plug it is the wire/spark cap/spark plug. More common is no spark on both cylinders of one bank (frt or rr). Cause would be a bad coil or bad igniter module which can be swapped frt vs rr and if the problem swaps bingo! The spark boxes can be opened on many models. You will find cold solder joints where the wires connect to the ckt board. Resolder and the igniter will usually come back to life. Also clean and tight connections, the kill switch, maybe a pulse generator.

Love the V4’s. My first gen interceptor 750 is a blast to ride.
If you are fan of V4 Honda you should know that early V4 were total disaster due to camshafts pitting, Honda improved it in 1986 and later models and definitely VFR series with gear driven camshafts are truly amazing and indestructible design. Every manufacturer makes mistakes even Honda and early V4 was just a perfect example of great design with a very poor execution.
Motocyklowy Wagabunda if you are curious to know.... I actually have 2 extra engines as I was concerned greatly about the issue when I bought mine. Found two parts bike and wanted to be prepared.
Cut to current times it’s determined that the problem is the rockers more than the cams though. The rockers are flash coated (like the shift forks are) and that made their surface harder than the cam this causing excessive wear to the cam and exposing the pitting in the cam cast.
Fortunately I have spares for years to come and if I have an issue with my current 30,000 mile engine, I have the other 5k and below engines as back up. Those in the know are prepared. Been there, done that, got the teeshirt.
@@AutoAli Mine 1984 Magna 700 had pretty bad pitting at 24 k, sold the bike and bought VFR 750 and put 30 k trouble free. Friend of mine, who was Honda mechanic for 35 years told me that he had to disassemble only one VFR engine due to poor machining.
I'm 5'11' my blood type is A positive , I'm 54 and my first bicycle ride was 1969 and my first motorcycle ride happened in 1976 .
I watch both of your channels mostly for the riding of different bikes , it brings back good memories .
Right now I'm on an 08 Areo 750 and after owning a 750 ACE as well I think what this 750 Aero is , is a 750 rebel but Honda didn't want to call it that ??? Not sure on that , but it rides like a big rebel .

Second bike I ever owed was a ratted out V45 Magna. Bought it from an officer in while I was stationed in Groton CT. Rode it from Groton CT to Conway AR and back. Best ride to AR I ever had, my first cross country motorcycle trip. It was amazing. Still remember the Goldwing rider who waved at me as I went through the Smokies and the morning sun breaking through the trees. Rained on me for 2 days on the way back. Wrecked on the Washington bridge in NY. Bike was mangled but made it home. Left it parked across the street from the base with the keys in it, I didn't have stickers to get it on base anyway. It disappeared 2 days later. She was a fun ride.

I’m just started watching your channel a few months ago and love it. I have a 1979 KZ 1000 Kawasaki that I bought in 1980 and road it for many years, then I had a electrical issue and parked it, then I got married had a little girl and life went on. 35yrs. later and another kid (boy) I decided to get it out and get it running, well gas tank rusted and electrical problem so I took it to a bike mechanic and $1000.00 later and new tires I’m back riding. And please keep up with the scriptures. JMJ

Can't wait to see that Magna running. I bought an 84 Kawasaki KZ750 LTD this past spring, similar bike. The bike shop told me it wasn't worth fixing but I went ahead anyway. $800 later it runs great and I love it.
30 years ago my dad had a 1982 Honda like that, black tank that eventually rusted out from the inside due to sitting all winter in the garage.

Took my test in 1980 on a 1971 suzuki T 250 street two stroke ! The cop that gave me the test tried buying my bike ! I still have the bike right now.
A V45 Magna was the bike I learned to ride on when I was 10. I wish I could find one again, but they're super hard to find now. They were crazy fast for what they were.
I learned on a 1972 Suzuki 750 Gt Lamans , which was a 3 cylinder two stroke, she was fast. Nice find on the magna and glad that you were reunited with the bike you learned on, wish my Suzuki was still a bike, I was storing it at buddies house and a tree fell on it , there was no saving her, I miss that bike, I called her old smokie, because the oil injectors were a little off,

Get a wiring diagram/schematic. If it is anything like my '82 Honda V45 Sabre, there's an inline fuse holder under the seat. The fuse would occasionally blow leaving me without any spark. You could turn it over 'til you were "blue-in-the-face" with no luck until the fuse was replaced.
Loved my Magna! Had the same model. The electrical harness caught fire while I was riding it. The grounds are crucial on the bike. Make sure they are clean and well connected. That one already fried one wire, so it’s already comprised. And come on! CHANGE THE TIRES
I ride an 84 magna VF700C, I have others but really like this bike. Good find my friend. Have the OE shop manual everything set to spec. Runs real smooth and it is very quick.
I had 2 of these from 1984- Don't be surprised to find out it's valvetrain is on recall. They had a problem with the 82-84 and a half valve seats from one factory being too soft and failing early. The issue was solved halfway through the 1984 production year. This bike has 2 inherent problems:
1. The starter motor is a constantly spinning type and wears out once a year
2. The plenum rusts out and there are no replacements.
My father had a Honda magna just like it when I was growing up!!..he passed away when I was 10,,but I remember the sound lol!!really would love to ride motorcycles again started racing motocross at 4 an haven't had a bike besides my crf80f in bout 4-5years miss it so much blessings ur way from indiana love always bro
Mine is completely apart in my garage. Had mine since 1984. I am redoing mine. Kinda go seized a bit. First I will guarantee the reserve tank it bad. CLR it. also the electric fuel pump should be checked. Before you start it. My carbs where all seized.Also the shiftier arm i had to loosen thru the motor. I will beat the clutch is seized, I see Coda NFi i may need some advise with about rebuilding my cards. I will say just throwing gas in it might not work out well. The air filter is under the tank. There is an arm to hold the tank. The anti freeze is not bad and wont corrode the engine. Change the thermostat. Jusat a few things to think about before you get started trying to start it. Good Luck with her. Remember, in 1982 in a Motorcycle dealership,, This Bike was unmatched. Was totally different from anything. V65, and Saber was 1983. 1982 V45 was it.

I recently did something similar, my first bike 1986 Suzuki ls650, been sitting for several years and I’ve been trying to get it toad worthy again. Sure is a fun and frustrating experience. It has seemed like it’s always 1 step forward 2 steps back the whole time.

I got a friend's V65 Magna going for him when nobody else would work on it. Those carbs are a real bear to get off ( hardly no room). Plus like urs , I cleaned and lined the tank because it sat so long. Took a while to do all to get it going , but MAN, those Vs can fly. 110 in 3rd gear , and wasn't even trying. Those bikes are smooth and fast.

I had a v30 many moons ago and that was one of the most comfortable well balanced all round motorbikes I ever experienced.
Looks great with the rectangle headlight and 80s styling.
The perfect combination of v4 torque handling and bulletproof honda reliability.
From what I remember it wasn't so bad on the fossil juice either.
I remember the super magna from 87 88 was the dream bike I never ended up getting.
An 883 evo harley came up with one owner in the hd dealership literally beside where I lived at the time for a deal I couldn't pass on.
Back then Harley's were so expensive and scarce to find at times.
I poured my time and finances into making a 1200 buell powered hotrod out of the totally stock sporty.. but otherwise I have a feeling the super magna or the v65 would be my first choice and probably still be living at my house today.
I have a literal soft spot in my heart for these beautiful machines and every time I see one I go through the internal dialogue that I end up having about how much better my life would be and imagining myself cruising around on one of these amazing machines
My first bike was an 83 Honda Sabre, basically the same bike but with all the fancy 80's electronics, digital everything. Is was an awesome bike
Man I wish I rode. I drove a neighbor’s Honda 50 as a kid. Later I bought an 86 interceptor for 500 bucks but never got it running. I needed a Craig. But even though I don’t ride, I absolutely love these videos.
If you had a V-45, what you REALLY wanted, a year or so later, was a V-65. I have an 84 V-65 Magna and an 85 V-65 Sabre that I bought new. I still ride both regularly.
I mess that bike. Fun times. Mine had a same problem with fire when I first bought it. Under the seat on the cluster of wire connectors. One was rubbing from the seat to the frame. Wires were burnt. Who knows on that one. Wow. Old times. Cool. I really hope you get her running. Love to see it. Take care.
I would say the coil or coils(plural) I'm not sure if there are two or just one. Kawasaki on their Police units had 1 coil per 2 cylinders on the KZ 1000, but it had 4 cylinders. It'll be interesting to find out what the problem might be. Check the ground cable. It can look new and not properly function. Check also the kickstand switch if its equipped with one. If that's old and crumbled or dirty and shorting out, it won't fire up either. Provided it has one, sometimes even just taking it off and shining it up will make it get good ground and it should run. I dont know a whole lot about them, But try those first before going any farther on the repair. To be honest, that aint for sale, and it would be both fun and cost effective if you did a ground up restoration on it. So you little boy can ride it with pride as he grows up.
My dad had a V45 when I was a kid, fond memories of riding with him.
i owned this bike when i was in the Navy. put 65,000 mi on it. i actually toured on it. rode from San Diego to Vancouver; San Diego to Denver. Fun bike. Gas level indicator light will go out when sensor gums up. this happened twice while i owned it.
i used to HATE adjusting the valves, because you have to remove the radiator which means draining the coolant. Eventually i had engine cutting out and honda told me it was the transistor units that run the electronic ignition (located under the seat). Once i replaced the transistor units, it ran fine. I was able to save money by going to a salvage yard to get the parts.

I found your other channel. I had one of those. About going on 4 years ago. 750 Honda Magna. The stator fried all of my electrical in the charging system. When it did run, it was an amazing bike. I miss it. I got a new one coming. Way smaller but I don't need a big one. That was a very fun bike.

Man I want a bike so bad I mis the pan head I had at my friend's old far it was the bike I learned on it was Frankenstein out of four different year's when I finally got the hang of riding it he fixed it to perfect riding specs and repainted it so it wasn't multiple colors still the best bike I had ever had and will always have a place in my memories

Ah 1982...my first car was actually a 1982 Dodge Van. It had a 225/6. It went 0 to 60 in about 6.5 minutes... Just kindling it didn't go over 50, but it started every time in the dead of Colorado winter.

I still own and ride a 86 V65 Magna. Owned a 83 V45 back in day. I also have a basicly mint Vetter Rooster fairing. It will be bad as hell once I find a headlight that isn't roached out. V65 has square headlight, want to go round to look better and put LEDs in.

I had the 1984 V45 700. Had the rectangular headlight. Probably the best bike I ever owned.
That is a nice bike, they were so popular back then. The super magna didn’t come out until 87.

No. I had the same bike and I wanted a V65 Magna. The 1100. At the time was the fastest production bike in the world. 125 mph quarter mile.

Tuco Ramirez Iv always wanted a V65 myself, I can still remember the tv commercial of it advertised back in the day, it was sooo badass !!!

I turned my V65 Sabre into a drag strip monster, locked rear suspension, lowered forks in tube ( a lot of work) some head flow work, tuned exhaust, re jetting and all of a sudden near 10 sec flat at 136 mph. But what was amazing was it’s 60 to 100 power, V4s really pull hard when pushed and lift the front wheel at the very end of first(65) and second gear. Without locking the rear the entire bike would leap off the ground at launch causing extreme unpredictable direction change, not something you would ever do twice.
Beautiful bike brings back lots of memories my neighbor had one I had the V-65!
My 1st bike was an '82, as well. I had a KZ650 CSR. I PAID $500 for it, and it was my daily for 2 1/2 years. Aaahhh the memories!

Wish I could find my first bike. When I was 19 I bought a brand new Yamaha XS1100 Special.. Black "candy" over gold metal flake. 1100 cc was INSANE then. One of the first bikes with a 'lean back' riding position. Loved it. Sold it to a guy who ripped me off. Alan Hughes was his name.
I will never forget the first 750cc bike I rode it was a 1972 Kawasaki H2 750 triple...
I was 14 yrs old and pulled into our local station to get gas on my 1969 Honda CL70.
A guy pulls in on this brand new H2 he saw me drooling over it and asked if I
wanted to ride it... Hell Yeah!!!... My Honda struggled to go 65 down hill...
That was the first time I went over a 100 mph on a motorcycle...

Fun story: I bought my first motorcycle coming home from Iraq in 2004. (2000 Harley Sportster) The same year I tracked down my fathers 1983 V65 Magna/VF1100. He sold the bike shortly after I was born, never to ride again. So, I bought it back. The same guy he sold it to still had it. He had put less than 1100 miles on it in almost 20 years. Needless to say we raced and I lost. I kind gift left me embarrassed. Just found your videos, enjoy watching

I had a 1982 nighthawk 750. Had 1800 miles on it. I bought for 200 as a recovered stolen. Vechical only has to replace rear tire and ignition.
bought a 700c magna for 300$ 6k mile sat in garage for 15 yrs, clean carbs, freash battery , oil, gas rebuilt and flushed brakes and clutch, ran like a beast!, traded it for an AR15 in 2009.

Those are really Awesome bikes. I have a V65 magna 1100, Fastest bike I have ever rode. 0 to 60 in 4 seconds flat. I bought a battery and a new solenoid switch on ebay and one of them shorted out and burned the bike, but the motor is still good so I hope to get it fixed one day.

The bike I learned to ride on was my dad's 1980 Kawasaki KZ1000. Seeing him and his son sitting on the bike together made me smile. Can't wait to hear this thing run.

Wow that was the first bike I bought myself that I truly wanted. I wanted the v65 1100 but couldn't afford it and bought the v45 750 from a guy in Waco or san Antonio area. The right turn signal fell off on my ride home to Fort worth tx and killed the electronics it was a crazy ride for someone who had never been on anything bigger than a moped. So crazy that was your first ride too. I've been watching your videos lately fantasizing about moving up to where you are and coming to work for you. So random that I watched this video today and found out we had something so strange in common. Hahaha

I recognized the V45 from the thumbnail as I bought a V65 when I was 20. Baddest ass bike made at the time.
