    Video not very helpful. You went out of your way to repeat how that system won’t work and didn’t say how to get rid of amonia or how the water should be better filtered for plants.

    This is a HUGE learning curve for new AP students. Very good video. I have a degree is Aquaponics and this is a common mistake. Great question is right!

    I assume the system is laid out wherein the plant grow beds maintain
    the highest liquid level in the entire loop. Only to clarify my thoughts I will
    assign vertical heights. Plant bed liquid level is 6’, SUMP 2 liquid level is at
    4’, Fish tank liquid level is at 4’, filters are at 2’, and Sump 1 (pump tank) liquid
    level is at 2’.
    This design demands aeration to be induced by a separate device. I don’t see it’s layout as an ammonia
    problem. Ammonium good - Ammonia bad.

    Another Great Vid..... There are a few plants that prefer Ammonia. Duck Weed, frogbit. etc. This is why a lot of folks prefer these plants in ponds. No need to worry about nitrite or nitrate. If the ammonia is being consumed and never converted.

    • @TheSchoolofAquaponics

      True Shawn. To add to your point, most plant prefer ammonia (nh4+) over nitrates. Even if the plant takes up nitrates it goes through a process known as nitrate assimilation where it must convert the nitrate back to ammonium to be used as a structure building component inside of the plant roots.

  • @deadfred821
    @deadfred821 5 лет назад +2

    So nitrates at high levels don't harm the fish? What about nitrites? If I remember correctly, it goes from ammonium to nitrites, firts; then nitrites to nitrates.

    One more thing, even if this did work(it does not) the water does not get cleaned instantly, one cycle in this order won't make any significant difference it takes many cycles each cleaning the water a bit, also fish don't make a ton of waste in a single cycle, it's a gradual process, hell even if the water was not cleaned it would take many days for the fish to die from their own waste.

    this video only makes sense for raft bed your grow beds are your biofilters and therefore do convert the amonium

    • @TheSchoolofAquaponics
      @TheSchoolofAquaponics  7 лет назад +1

      You have to examine the question that he asked. He didn't ask if the grow beds are biological filters. He was assuming that sending the water through the grow beds first would prevent the ammonia from returning back to the sump tank (in one pass through). This doesn't occur no matter which system is used.

  • @wallofstar
    @wallofstar 6 лет назад +1

    will nitrate turn back to ammonium /ammonia or the nitrate will stay at the grow bed? Just wonder we should keep continuously water circulation or by dosing once a day to let the plant has time to adsorb the nitrate.

  • @jaredthibodaux6796
    @jaredthibodaux6796 5 лет назад

    Well I will say that there is a high amount of BSA within a DWC bed that can oxidize that ammonia if sufficient oxygen is present in the system. That said if you are running near zero ammonia in a split flow system this is not any kind of disadvantage either, so long as it is all broken down it really matters little how you did it. I am running a simple four stage sumpless gravity fed DWC system and 90 min after a saturation feeding my TAN registers at only 0.25ppm, do I care if it is broken down in the biofilter or the grow bed, heck no just so long as ammonia stays near zero and my nitrates are exactly where I want them.

    You're assuming that he or she is using a flouting raft. If the person is using a media bed than the media will take care of the ammonia. IF he built the filters right that will take care of if in floating raft. I'm not sure what you're rambling about

    Hi Brooklyn, Currently I am designing small scale flood and drain system. I took your Aquaponics system build course and you name different pond liner materials. They are very expensive where I live, but I managed to get some old plastic liners used in those gigantic advertising boards everywhere in the streets, I think they are made of Vinyl. Do you know if this plastic will bring problems to the health of the system? I found that there are Pool liners made of this material, but didn't found any information about people using this material in aquaponics or fish ponds.
    Your videos are awesome! I am learning lots of things

      Hey Diego, Since you're a student in our course, to receive a faster reply it will be better if you post your questions on the schools comment board. Student questions receive priority over youtube questions. And since there are so many questions being asked, we want our student's questions to be addressed first.
      As far as the used vinyl material that you have access to, it's very difficult to determine if it is safe to use simply because I don't know if it was coated with anything for extra protection. Vinyl by itself usually doesn't pose any issues in aquaponics, but if the the liner was placed against a harmful chemicals then those chemicals may be present on the liner.
      Here is a forum post that I found on the subject for you with those that have used billboard liner for ponds
      forums.pondboss.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=223712
      This website says that billboard liner is fish safe.
      billboardtarps.com/product-category/pond-liners/
      In my opinion, it will boil down to what chemicals the billboard liner was exposed to and if you're able to throughly clean it or not.

    base on ur explain u can not take NH3 from system at all ...so how to take it out of system ?

    • @TheSchoolofAquaponics
      @TheSchoolofAquaponics  7 лет назад +4

      That's the purpose of a biological filter and nitrification. Its job is to convert ammonia into nitrite then to less toxic nitrate. That's how you get rid of ammonia in a system.

    How could someone organically deal with nutrient deficiency (such as iron) without purchasing anything fancy? Will spraying leaves with rusty water work for the iron?

    • @StoRedMage33
      @StoRedMage33 6 лет назад

      Rusty water will not work. You need chelated iron supplement to add iron to your system. Do some research on the supplements because not all of them are considered to be organic.

    i am doing exactly this but i use hydroton in my sump as the bio filter , shouldn't this presence of a bio media adding a lot of surface area for bacteria. the plats and simply for habitat. i also use a canister filter all micro fiber pads simply for water polishing. The majority of the stages are bio too. What is your thought also i liked and subscribed. i also use African cichlids . My favorite is turtle ponics though lol

    Would this system not deliver a more nutrient rich solution to the plants than a system with 1 sump tank?
    Or is the uptake nutrition rate so slow it doesn't make any difference if your passing 15ppm or 50ppm through the roots?

    BUT WHAT IS SOLUTION TO REMOVE NH3 plz do reply over here to make it easy for me

  • @Kazukio77

    What is the purpose of sump 2? Isn't it kind of unnecessary? Obviously sump 1 and the rest of the set up is required but sump 2 just seems like a waste of material and time. Perhaps i'm missing something?

    Here is a stupid question, nothing to do with aquaponics but if you had a fish tank with fishes in it, doesnt the amonia build up in the tank over time? And why do you need to filter out the solids before feeding the water to the plant when the solids would act as fertilizer?

    • @bc8053
      @bc8053 6 лет назад

      That's why charcoal in filter, removes gas amonia

  • @bounchofbeaners6627
    @bounchofbeaners6627 7 лет назад +2

    lol why do you need 3 tanks just to filter the water?? just use a swirl filter. with a ball valve at the bottom to release all the fish solids.

    • @ilovefunnyamv2nd
      @ilovefunnyamv2nd 7 лет назад

      bounchofbeaners that only address solids, does not address fish pee. As stated in other videos, depending on grow media and bed designs, those filters are not necessary. Speaking as an engineer, it's better to design your system to succeed in any condition, than it is specialize it for a specific condition. I don't have any practical experience though, currently small scale hydroponic
