Did a trip recently near the Grand Canyon and temps got down to around 20°. We have the same exact unit and in the (very poorly written) instructions it shows the correct angle for the exhaust being at or below level. For this reason I added 2in feet on either side of the frame to raise it up off the ground. Keep in mind these units were originally designed to be in vehicles with the exhaust exiting down and out. I will also be adding a metal plate in between the feet to protect the ground from the hot exhaust as well. I ran it at the lowest setting and because we were at 7000ft it used 2x as much fuel than at sea level (I was happy it was even able to run at all). So far no complaints and kept our sleeping area (modified Tacoma 6ft bed, cap with Nomad Camper) at 74° all night. To my knowledge there in no thermostat just adjustable fuel rate and fan speeds "control" the temperature. Getting ready to build an adventure trailer which I plan on installing the heater in. A few other changes I made to my unit were 8awg power supply wires, and expandable, flexible 3in ridged dryer vent instead of the soft sided type you used. I'm ramble writing now but planning a trip out westish in mid April for 2weeks from Michigan and was looking for suggestions?
The dielse heater exhaust ur using it with exaugsht in storage position (vertical) wen running needs to be horizontal to avoid diesle build up in exausght pipe and flare up causing rich code... and shut down.... rotate pipe will run all night
Haha! No worries at all! It's like having a booger and no one ever telling you... and you just walk around all day with a booger hangin' out. I'd rather a little embarrassment than that! Thanks!
Hey Kevin - it would be super helpful if you shared some of the great tips people sent in in case others are coming up against heater issues too. Glad you got yours fixed!
I just got rid of some KM3's, out of all the tires I have ran they are by far the quickest to wear out. I have just installed another set of Wildpeak AT3w's my all time favorite tires, I have ran the following on my 6,500lb Nissan Frontier: KO2's, Wildpeak AT3W, S/T Maxx and lastly the KM3's. Goodluck with the Wildpeak M/T's, hopefully they give you good service.
We got a 4-Dog American made steel wood stove for winter camping. Hubby rigged it with insulated pipes so we could use it in the tent. Going on 15 years, thing still goes strong👍The guy who makes them also makes them in titanium
GREAT discussion of the heater plan. There are some good videos this winter of people ACTUALLY using their gear in cold weather, with many reported failures. I keep it simple with a Mr. Heater ceramic block buddy heater; but I am still subject to a plugged filter or a frozen propane line, so I always have a couple of layers of contingency plans.
When I was working at a ski resort we used a lot of Diesel heaters. Any time it got down to -5 to -10 we had to find a way to thin the diesel fuel out or we had carbon problems.
@@northernmichiganoverland Canadian diesel fuel doesn't gel as we use winter additives. I knew what that was a long time ago but I'm sure a Google search would identify it. I should wait until the end to see if he mentions it.
So glad you got the heater working. We are backpackers from the old days and I remember some VERY cold nights in the Smokies, so I can empathize. So what was in that last meal you made...white beans, tomatoes, quinoa? Love your family-centered show.
Hey guys.! Hope Christmas was kind & stay safe for 2022. Magnificent sceneries accompanied by great soundtrack. I am very interested with those rock arts. Where is it located? and where can I go to get more info on the drawings & history. I'm turning 65 this year and I know exactly what I'll be doing....what you guys are doing. Cheers for sharing, Greetings from Christmas Island.
The thermostat on the header reads surrounding temp, obviously. so if its outside in the cold with the heating unit, it will never shut down and continue to run at high heat. I had to extend the wires from the unit to the thermostat and keep the thermostat in tent. Also, exhaust should be pointed downward or horizontal. Hope this helps..I'm very happy with this cheap heater.
We ran the Falken Wildpeaks for about 9,000 miles and returned them. The on-road rain traction is scary; they would break loose vary easily with the Tacoma being re-geared. Now running the Maxxis Razor ATs 33s, which is a hybrid tire with MT side walls and outer tread and with AT inner tread. I can't break these tires loose in the rain if I tried, and I tried really hard too, absolutely blowin away at the performance. The off-roading is Supreme! and I've owned BFGs, Falken, General, and Mickeys, nothing comes close to the Maxxis Razors both on road and off road. The side wall flex of these tires is amazing as well and I've got the AT LTs too, which is crazy for 10 ply tires. Maxxis did a really good job at gearing these tires for off-road conditions. Give them a try next time, and you realize that all the other brands have some catching up to do.
Cold is good for you. I don’t want to spend 24 hours in it. I coached my soccer team today and it was 28 degrees. I just keep telling the kids that it’s boosting their metabolism and immune system. Can’t wait to get to Utah at the end of February.
Thank you for the trouble shooting as a culture we tend to just pass on to the next thing if something doesn't go as planned. I have no personal experience with diesel heaters but another channel I watch, Van City Van Life, has a Webasto heater installed in his van. He has mentioned in the past that sometimes you have to run it at full blast for a while. Otherwise, it does exactly what your heater did.
We just did a trip last week -16f and -36f windchill, definitely can be fun (in a weird way) if properly equipped . Anytime outside is better than sitting at home lol
There are outdoor youtubers that talk to the camera and tell you about where/what they are doing. And then there are those handful of channels that have figured out how to really bring you along. This channel is the latter. There are a few others here and there in other fields of expertise. I don't know how or what they do that's different than the other channels and I've really tried to figure it out. what draws me to this channel compared to others? I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the music. maybe the personalities. Maybe it's how the tell the story. I'll be back for sure.

Amazing views! These areas of south central Utah doesn’t “enjoy” the popularity of Moab even in the high season, in the winter you you just have the whole place to yourself. Those cold nights are not super fun. For me the the main difficulty is that mental barrier that you need to overcome in order to get out of the tent in the morning 🥶🥶🥶
Revere Overland and Venture 4wd would be 2 more good sources of technical info for your heater. Interestingly, Chris w/ Venture 4wd was having trouble with his gasoline fueled Wabasto heater and was thinking about switching to diesel. He was having trouble at higher altitude with proper atomization of his fuel, I believe. Revere Overland built a self contained unit in a Pelican type case. Good luck w/ your endeavor and, as always, Safe Travels.
Perhaps the old fuel contributed to the high carbon deposits in the catalyst chamber. Also fuel having gelling problem with the lower temps. Perhaps a winter additive to prevent fuel gelling. Given the lean burn condition. Also a humble request for Sarah's "Meatball Pho" recipe, please??? I thank you in advance and cheers, mate.
These diesel heaters hate any restriction to the hot air flow. If the hose from the heater to the car is too long or restrictive, you will have issues.
Pity you cannot get cabin heat from the Lexus up into the tent. That way you could just let it idle and lul yo self to sleep with the V8 😉🤠. Question, how long would those fire pit rocks hold heat if you put them all together in a bag of sorts?
Ever thought about trading your vehicles and trailer for a Revel? I remember the RV didn’t work out but Revel seems that it can give you the RV and Overland combined…and solar power would address the cold situation…
my 2022 diesel gladiator rubicon came with the wildpeak mts. they are quiet on the road vs my grabber x3s i had on the tundra. have not ran a trip with them yet so i also am waiting on your review
Diesel fuel is different from Sumer to Winter - to winterise diesel you add 10% kerosine, this stops the was in the fuel from solidifing and claging things up.

diesel does NOT like cold weather. It tends to "gel", and may be what is causing your fuel delivery issue at 14*. I recommend getting new fuel and adding some anti gel additive.
Another great video guys that you for sharing Utah. Question on your off-road driving. I know you air down the tires but what mode do you usually drive in say 2 high, 4 high or are your rigs equipped with a AWD mode of some kind?

There is no "thermostat" on these units. Only adjustable fuel rates and fan speed "control" the output.

My guess is the fuel is gelling. If it was summer blend there’s no way it would flow well in those tiny fuel lines in those temperatures
Run it on pure kerosene not diesel at those temps.
@@wodgesad I've heard kerosene is too dry for them, maybe a blend is a good idea? Plus kerosene is many times more expensive
If you run a 80/20 blend of Kerosene/Diesel there is enough lubrication in the fuel to avoid any problems.
Run it full blast for 10 to 20 minutes before you put it away. I use the same thing in my semi truck and this helps prolong thr carbon buildup.
Would love to hear what you have to say about narrower vs wider tires in regards to balancing on-road and off-road performance in your upcoming video.
As I suggested in previous videos put a 5/16 nut driver in your heater kit so it’s easier and faster to attach the hose
But then I have to dig it out... Leatherman was ready to go :D

No Ctane it gelled up diesel fuel freezes/ gels up under 30 degrees if it’s not treated, I’m a trucker I’ve had it happen
It looks very cold 😎👍

when it gets that cold you need to add fuel additive to keep fuel from jelling
power service is a good additive
Love this adventure family... Im from malaysia... 👍

The exhaust should be lower as condensation runs back down the pipe and leans out fuel mixture. Also the muffler has to be notch down to the bottom.
Always so beautiful
Also, run at max temp for 10-15 minutes before shutdown, helps burn off carbon build up.
Diesel fuel gel? From cold temp's? Anti gel additive?
