- Legendary former HBO blow-by-blow man, current PPV.Com commentator and Boxing Hall of Famer, Jim Lampley, gives his thoughts following David Benavidez's decisive 12 round unanimous decision victory over former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
Interview by Sean Zittel.
Benavidez is really really good. But he is not a monster. And he should slow down the “i will KO canelo” shit talk. He is not KOing canelo in a million years.
Remember when people was saying wilder was all that? Up the opposition and see what happens. Now everybody says watching wilder is sad. He is the same wilder, except he was fighting people that just stayed in front of him.
Benavidez is in a similar situation. Fast hands and talented but has no real power against the elites. Only against the small guys at 168.
Lets see once he fights canelo, bivol, beterviwe, even morrel. Lets see what he can do to them. And then we can say benavidez is amazing. Right now he is just not. And lets not pretend like he did not hit gvozdik flush and hard like 15 times. Gvoz just ate it.

Comparing Wilder to Benavidez is crazy. Wilder is an unskilled but monstrous puncher. Benavidez is a well-rounded boxer with great speed, excellent combinations, and solid power. He has more than enough of a chance to beat the smaller Canelo at 168.
In his defense he pointed injuries in his hand and what not, but still came to fight.

He was talking about how he will fk canelo up, knocking him out. About forget canelo im going to 175 and take over, about how his power will be fine at 175.
After the fight, he quicky pointed out the injuries. In the conference after the fight he did it again. He also said he is going to 168 to face canelo because he earned it. After saying fuck it im not waiting. He also said guys at 175 can take a bigger punch, basically saying that is why he could not ko gvoz. Brother gvoz took punishment. Bena just has no power like he thinks and talk. You can tell alot by the way people talk and their body language and excuses. Benavidez showed he talked too much about his “greatness” and he looks like he feels he needs to take a little step back when it comes to talking.

So this pretty much proves that Canelo has respectable power at 175Ibs. He had Bivol back peddling at some points in the fight and stopped Kovalev after he stopped Anythony Yarde with a Jab and beat Eleider Alvarez to obtain the WBO strap at the time. Mean while Benavidez moves up to 175Ibs and not only he doesn't HURT Gvozdyk at any point of the fight but gasses out after the 2nd half of the fight. Still manages to call out Canelo when you should be focused on fighters like Bivol and Beterbiev in your weight class. If David Morrel stops his next opponent at 175Ibs this further proves that Benavidez isn't a Monster.

Before that fight Lampley was comparing Benavidez punches to Mike Tyson and believed he had a future as a great Mexican heavyweight. When I heard him say that I realized Lampley was out of touch with current fighters and wasn't doing serious research on today's fighters to update himself. Anyone who fights Bivol or Beterbiev will be an underdog at this point. Thats why they’ve own the division the last few years. Canelo tried and failed. They are that good. Bivol vs Beterbiev getting pushed back was a blessing in disguise for Benavidez. He needs to get stronger and in better cardio at that weight if he wants to beat either of them. They don’t fade.

Benavidez looked exactly like he did at 168. He threw everything he had at Gvozdyk and didn't even come close to sending him to the mat. Worse yet, he was gassing out the last several rounds. Canelo can either look at this as an opportunity or a pass. More than likely, he's eyeing Crawford now more than Benavidez, depending on how Bud does against Madrimov.
if Beterbiev can continue fighting the same way into his 40s Benavidez would have a better chance against Bivol. You simply can't let Beterbiev hit you anywhere and Benavidez would get destroyed trying to block with that high guard.

Here’s the thing! Benavidez is NOT knocking out CANELO. That right there means, he will lose the fight. You need to have KO power to beat CANELO. If you do not, you will not win. Benavides needs another fight at 175 before fighting Bivol or Beterbiev. His power did not show or translate to 175 due to his injured hands. At least that’s what Benavides claimed. Therefore we couldn’t get a true assessment of Benavides at 175.
