The Reagan Ranch "Rancho del Cielo" in 4K

- In the summer of 2017, we had the unique opportunity to visit Rancho del Cielo, Ronald and Nancy Reagan's 688-acre ranch located atop the Santa Ynez Mountain range northwest of Santa Barbara, California. Considered "The Western White House" during his presidency, it hosted dignitaries such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Queen Elizabeth II.
James particularly enjoyed Reagan's 1962 Jeep CJ-6, and the pair of "jackalopes" mounted on the wall, inside the house. While outside, we did see deer, but sadly, there were no jackalopes to be found (I'm told they hibernate in the summer).
Reagan's handiwork was everywhere to be seen. He laid the natural rock (sourced from the property) in the outside patio, the faux brick flooring inside the house, and the miles of wooden post fencing surrounding and weaving all throughout the property. He owned multiple chainsaws, and his tools were stored and displayed as he left them. Every tool had its own place and seemed quite worn and "fit" for ranch work.
It is notable that this is quite a humble place when you consider it belonged to a Hollywood movie star and the 40th President of the United States. Very reminiscent of anyone's grandparent's home and workshop in the country. We were told there were only two presidential seals on the property. One was easy to find. It was prominently displayed above the fireplace in the family section of the house. The second one didn't make itself known until we toured the tack barn. Check out the riding mower: "Lawn Mower 1!"
So many great stories from this place. My favorite was about how he refused to buy a new bed for the master bedroom as there were already two twin beds in there when they purchased the place. To save money, he "zip-tied" the twin beds together and put a footstool at the end of his side so his feet wouldn't hang over. A fitting story that explains the man, his ranch, and his philosophy toward life.
What a day! This place would be mountain bike heaven!

@@ChillSensesASMR It was a private tour. My wife bid on, and won a charity auction prize that included the tour. It was offered by someone who had a connection with the Reagan Library or Ranch Center. We consider ourselves very lucky because at that time, the ranch was not open to the general public. Ronald Reagan left office with the highest approval rating of any president in American history. He also won every state in the election except for one. Reagan was a good man. I'm glad he was loved. Great video. Thank you.

When you see this beautiful, small ranch, you see the simplicity and relaxed way way of life that Reagan loved. I can see why he stayed here as much as he could when in the WH. This is proof that you don't need a huge mansion and a fleet of fancy cars, just some beautiful nature around you and modest ranch to call home. I would be so happy here and to be able to explore your property on horseback and not see any neighbors around you.

Thank you! RR was (and in my opinion still is) one of the greatest presidents for the reasons you state in your overview. He was like everyone's grandpa and just a plain down to Earth guy. This video was masterfully executed and the music was perfect!! What a cool way to see his ranch which most of us would never be able to do but through the eyes of your lens. Thank you again.

Experiences like this inspired me to learn basic editing (something I had no knowledge of prior the 2017). This visit was such a powerful experience that I didn't even dare edit it until I found the right music. I think it stayed on my computer unedited for close to a year because no music seemed right. I even tried themes from "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" and other such westerns, but they all seemed too serious or corny. Then one day, this music came over my playlist and my mind went immediately to this ranch. So emotional, so optimistic, so western, so beautiful. Couldn't believe it was music I had in my library for so many years. I think it was worth the wait. Thanks again!

For 3 years in the mid 60's, I lived and worked in Dixon, Illinois, where Reagan grew up and went to high school. At that time, he was still not into politics. There were all sorts of signage at places that he played and lived and worked. (Louella Parsons was also from Dixon.) I thoroughly enjoyed this video - thanks for sharing it with us. Quite apparent that the ranch was Ronnies baby - his touch is apparent everywhere.

Thanks for posting this. Reagan was (I truly believe) one of a most kind and good man. After FDR I see two exceptional leaders in 20th century, Reagan and JFK. No politics here...I agree with your policy on this video...only wanted to say we will never see the likes of such affable and good men who cared for the common man. A beautiful video here. Thanks! Believe it or not, the video sat unfinished for almost 6 months because I wasn't happy with any of the music I tried. It was such a special day and place that I really wanted it to have music fit for the occasion. Once I finally remembered I had this soundtrack in my library, I knew I had it. By the way, we had chills all that day too. Thanks again!
It looks as if Nancy and Ron just walked out of the place. All of their belongings are still there...the ultimate time capsule. I suspect it was Nancy's grief that compelled her to sell the ranch along with their belongings all at once. It must have been too difficult for her to go there and sift through their life...to decide what would stay and what would go.
Yes, I think you're right. That, along with her sense of history and Reagan's legacy probably also motivated her. Besides, I think the Ranch was more Ronnie's "Thing" and I'm guessing the Bel Air home was more her "style" She probably had her most personal stuff at home and not at the ranch. Regardless, I'm happy that it is being preserved as is. Nancy was quoted as saying: "If you want to understand Ronald Reagan, then go to the Ranch." I agree wholeheartedly!

We were there just before, during, and after sunset. The peacefulness deepened even further at dusk when a group of deer came to feed in the meadow adjacent to the house. Just a magical place! Thanks for the nice comments.
Very interesting, To browse the rooms of the homestead and see personal items and the stories they tell would be amazing and not a TV in sight but always a book close at hand has the hallmarks of a fulfilled and content life. There was plenty of reading and in Ron's case lots of writing as well.

I remember the ranch well. I loved running down to the small lake and back when off duty. President Reagan was always the gentleman and Ms. Nancy always the lady. Both were always very kind and complimentary to us all.

@@SonsofThunderRolling -- I'm afraid not but I knew most of those guys back then. Most of them were highly skilled technicians and or supervision. I was part of the strike force or muscle brigade as we were referred to. lol We were not allowed to be photographed. My personal thanks for recording this video. It brought back a lot of fond memories of my youth and service on the ranch. I have nothing but high praise for President Reagan and First Lady Ms. Nancy. Both treated us all like royalty at the ranch.
It really shows no matter who you are; we are just caretakers in life and then we are gone. Glad this beautiful place is still being cherished. Great history video to remember a humble, and great President.

What was pointed out however during the tour, is that there are no "politically" related photos, mementos etc. inside the house (other than the fireplace presidential seal). Everything was family related. This was the president's place to "escape" Washington. A true family getaway. Wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn they were his grandchildren.

My company does the security of this estate. Very beautiful, very simplicit, nothing overly fancy just relaxing quiet and quite a ways away from population (always a good thing lol)
What's cool is his estate is surrounded by country then you drive off property and on the other side of the bridge is the pacific ocean/Beach. He had it all without needing some crazy extravagance

It seems so empty without Mr. and Mrs. Reagan there. I dont know why but it just made me sort of sad that they werent there after all the clips ive watched of Ronald and Nancy being there.
I understand how you might feel while watching, but don't feel sad. To be there is to experience a unique joy. Everywhere you go up there, there are many many things that bring them to life. It has been left such that you feel they've just stepped out (or had to run back to the White House to sign a bill or something) and will be back soon. Even Nancy's robe is hanging just inside the closet so when she gets back, she can put it on and go watch "Murder She Wrote" with "Ronnie" in the family room. Rather than empty, it is filled with memories, mementos, stories, and Reagan's optimism. We should all be so fortunate to leave such a legacy when we're gone. God Bless!

Well done. Seems like a quintessential California foothill ranch residence. Peaceful and blends nicely into the terrain. Viewed Huell Howser's California's Gold episode featuring this but enjoyed your take more save for some of the stories told by former Secret Service Agent. Didn't know about the Secret Service building on site but not surprised.
Thanks! The amazing part of the Secret Service building is that it is behind and above, but you can't see it from the house. Very well hidden, however, once inside the Secret Service building, you can see the house very clearly. I'm sure Nancy approved.

A favorite spot of his. The last photograph in the video (where you see the verse written on the screen) was taken there. It is hard to imagine President Reagan has been dead so many years. Dying after he was out of public eye during the last ten years of his life . He didn't know he used to be the leader of the free world. Great video and very nostalgic. Everybody is born to die and when you die all you leave is memories for the generation that follows.

Thank you! I actually held off producing (finishing) this video for 6 months because I couldn't find music that I felt would be appropriate for the situation. It was such a special day that I didn't want to lessen it with the wrong music. One day, I was listening to this album (All the Pretty Horses) when I started having visions/memories of the ranch visit. I knew in an instant I had found the music! I finished the video in less than 30 minutes. Thanks to Suzie Katayama, Marty Stuart, Larry Paxton for writing and producing such a wonderful score! Still haven't seen the movie yet, however. 😏

President Reagan often spoke of heaven and even said being with Nancy at their ranch was a little bit of heaven on earth.
