  • COVID-19 lockdown resulted in many on-line webinars, presentatons and trainings. Here is one of mine.
    "Understanding Gradient Factors" is a presentation that explains, in simple and hopefully easy to understand way how conservatism determined by GF works in software and/or dive computer based on ZHL-16A GF algorytm.

    This is the best explanation of gradient factors I've seen. But I do have a few questions I hope can get answered here. 1) How are the M values for each tissue compartment determined? 2) Are they the same for each compartment or different? 3) Hypothetically, can the GF low be higher than the GF high (ex 80/30)? The Shearwater computers will not allow this. 4) What determines how long each stop is?

    Question : gf are for ascent stop algorithm. Why does gf affect Ndl on Shearwater computer ?

    • @inkedgemini
      @inkedgemini 2 года назад +6

      Your NDL is just your ability to surface within your GF high supersaturation limit without needing additional stops on the way up. Turn your GF high down and you must start your ascent sooner to exit the water within that limit, turn it up and you extend your NDL because you're willing to exit with a higher limit. This affects everything from the adaptive safety stop setting, to your deco stop requirements and your NDL.

    What is the answer to your final question: Which gradients are more conservative 40/70 or 30/80?

    • @anghelcosmin15
      @anghelcosmin15 3 месяца назад

      40/70 is very conservative, the high GF is the "end of your dive" to say like thad, for example 30/80 or 80/80 will give you the same time of deco but the lower gf will stop you earlyer in the way up instead of higher value on low gf...
      For example
      30 min to x depth gives you 2 min to 6m and 5min to 3m
      2nd will give u like
      1 min to 9m, 2min to 6m and 4min at 3m
      Ending with 1% extra CNS

    • @askingdiver
      @askingdiver 3 месяца назад

      @@anghelcosmin15 sorry, explaining the values does not answer my question. In your example the difference is in 1% CNS and first starting with deeper first stop. But which one of the is better?

    • @anghelcosmin15
      @anghelcosmin15 3 месяца назад

      @@askingdiver 40/70 is more conservative! Bigger "safety margin" from the original m-value line! If this will be more clear for you! Cheerss!

    • @askingdiver
      @askingdiver 3 месяца назад +1

      @@anghelcosmin15 Ok, that applies only to the GFHigh=70, because for GFLow it is the opposite. (we are comparing 40/70 vs 30/80). One setting benefits from more conservative GfLow, the other from more conservative GFHigh. So what is the measure, which one is more conservative? How do i decide? Which property of the two is more important or do i need something else to be able decide?

    • @anghelcosmin15
      @anghelcosmin15 3 месяца назад

      @@askingdiver ok give me an depth x, bottom time, nitrox mod or air and i will tell you exactly the deco plan!
      But surface GF gives you the conservative level! Durring the dive yor sur GF growing with "no deco time" till will reach your HGF set for example 95. (Sur gf95) then what is over need deco..for example u are in 3m last deco stop and your surfGF is 110% thad means u can't surface till your surGf will be 95 or less..fi u reach 95 and u still oingsafety stop for an extra 3 minutes your sur gf can become 80% wich can be caled med conservative (your set was 45/95) but u surfaced with 45/80)

  • @FloridaMadeMike
    @FloridaMadeMike Год назад +1

    What was the answer to the last question ? 40/70 or 30/80

  • @askingdiver
    @askingdiver 3 года назад

    Great presentation about gradient factors, only one small fix, default gradients for all Shearwater devices is 40/85. I would also recommend/add what are the ranges for gradients? Both in the range 0-100%, but most devices don't allow you to do so. So common range is 20-50% for Gradient low and 60-95% for gradient high. With the rule that gradient heigh is always a higher number than gradient low. And last, too low gradients add unnecessary time underwater (at the decompression stops), which means you need to have enough gas when planning the dive.

    • @mattlewis7787
      @mattlewis7787 3 года назад +1

      As soon as you flick them into oc tech they default to 30/70

    • @ugosinsaang
      @ugosinsaang 3 года назад +1

      Recreational mode's medium conservatism is 40/85, Tec modes switch to 30/70 per default, recreational has 3 modes of conservatism, most conservative switches to 30/70.
