Ahhh the Nightmare. I remember an old 3.5 evil campaign where we freed one from a group of paladins we were hunting. Our dumbass wizard (who had ZERO ranks in ride and was already beaten up) fell off of it from 50ft in the air and almost died from 5d6 falling damage. To quote the DM "It snorts at you in disgust, regretting that it allowed you to ride it in the first place, and fly's off into the night." Good times.

Sometimes regular horses eat birds so I wouldn’t be surprised if a Pegasus just decided to make a bird a drive by snack.

Here's an idea for a more powerful Pegasus. Give it the ability to fire radiant feathers from its wings, you can mechanically treat it as each wing firing a magic missile spell, but radiant instead of force damage.

My Paladin just recently got access to Find Greater Steed. Hoo boy, it’s a good time. 1) My DM let me have the flavor that the warhorse I had from Find Steed, Nimbus, was awakened to his true form of a jet black Pegasus. (Now imagine the imagine a plate armored red tiefling riding into battle on a jet black pegasus.) 2) My DM gave me a Saddle of the Cavalier, so I can’t be unwillingly knocked off the Pegasus. Which is great for flying.

Pegasi should get a radiant-like smite + hoof attack and some healing

Does anyone understand why Greek (& Roman) myth links horses with water and Poseidon?
Only correlations I can think of are:
    1. "Unicorns' horns" were likely Narwhal horns.
    2. Seahorses are horse-shaped.
Other than that...it's like ummm...they...drink water and can cross creeks...which means nothing special.

Because they wanted to. Looking for logic where there is none will drive you insane.

It's because horses are viewed as the epitome of wild and free spirit to many people's, ancient Greeks included, and that spirit is strongly associate with the unruly nature of the Sea. So the deemed Poseidon the Lord of Horses. There is always a degree of logic behind aspects of religion.

I think you missed one equine variant - the Unisus or Winged Pegasus. I don’t blame you though as D&D rarely does them (I think they appeared in one issue of Dragon Magazine). You do get them in some media usually though not exclusively for girls (My Little pony and She-Ra back in the day Had then and my sister loved them). That said, they would make a nice upgrade species for the Unicorn 🦄 regardless of the gender of the players, DM or the Equine in question.
And for a final not very useful point. Not only are Nightmares fun and look great (ask Venger in the 80’s D&D cartoon and every other baddie that wants to make an entrance) but they have great metagame utility. The nightmare actually is one of the easiest templates to use for a budding DM to mod. Nightmares are linked to the lower planes. It you can link them to any plane or location. You can make Lightmares or Windstalions. They are just great fun to play with making as a dm.
