Beautiful and heartwarming. I also adopted a baby girl 41 years ago and she has brought my husband and myself tremendous joy and nachas BH. How she came to us is also an amazing story of miracles. If something is meant to be, Hashem or orchestrates it in the most amazing ways. I remember Devorah coming to Manchester UK many years ago and I introduced my daughter to her and explained that just like she was chosen to be our daughter so too Devorah was chosen by her parents to be their daughter. They are truly special gifts from Hashem and we are very blessed

This is an evil world. However, people adopting children from ANYWHERE is not proof. Adoption is proof that there is love and goodness in the world. How many African children call you "Mom" or "Dad"? How many Asian or Hispanic or white or black American children have you adopted? Have you spent any time researching the relative difficulties of international adoptions? They are not all equally open to foreign adoption, interracial adoption, parents of other religions, do not have the same costs or time frames, etc. Even in the US, the National Association of Black Social Workers is openly opposed to white populations adopting black children. Finally, to simply answer your very negative inquiry, yes; Jews do adopt children other than white and Asian. And..... shocker: Some Jews even ARE African.

In Israel I met an Afro-Brazilian woman who had been adopted as a baby by a Jewish couple (the mother was from New York and the father from South Africa). She was a teacher in Israel.

I don't think they were setting out to adopt a Chinese girl - it just happened. While it was not a formal adoption per se, look up who the foster parents of Louis Armstrong were, as well as the origin of his nickname Satchmo and the fact that he was a fluent Yiddish speaker.

I'm asian with asian features like Devorah and life in Yerushalayim as a bais yaakov frum girl and a convert was a great challenge with all the stares and comments from strangers and also the fact that we have to keep explaining ourselves is tiring. I can feel Devorah's story to the core! But one thing my madj told me is that the fact that with all those hardships we didn't stop becoming frum and we continue doing it makes H' so proud of us! and so much reward and happiness will come iy'h . Great interview! Brings back memories of the summer of 1988 when I went on a post high school graduation trip to Israel. Devorah’s Dad A”H spoke to our group and I read the Bamboo Cradle. I was so in awe and inspired by Devorah and her family. With all my own insecurities at the time, it never occurred to me how hard the struggle would be to be an Asian Bais Yaakov girl in Israel.

@@gfygfy9512 I have never looked into this but believe that adoption by Jewish couples is the same as in non-Jewish ones. I don't think it has to do with being Jewish or Christian or anything but more like a personal choice.

People aren't shopping for a new car or sofa, it's a child. We would also think it was morally wrong for a couple to have a foster aborted just because it's skin color wasn't dark or light enough.

@@gfygfy9512 Adopting a child is serious business and there are serveral things to consider by a desiring couple. I am sorry to hear your statistics. Children come in all shape and sizes, likewise Jews so there is no room for discrimation or racism in Judaism.

In usa, I know less religious jewish people that adopted black kids and special needs kids Every countrr has their own rules about adopting kids to usa. Some require you live in that country for a time period before a adopting. Some countries want a donation that not everyone is able to give. Some countries won't let usa adopt their kids. Foreign Adoption is not as easy as domestic adoption.

Just wanted to say that I don't think Devora's dad had a choice about taking her in the train station , because she was such an adorable baby. I am Israeli , secular. I really liked the book "The Bamboo cradle" ,and having been an outsider at school- I could really feel for Devora. Her diary at the end of the book brought me to tears. How wonderful it is that Am Israel is so diverse. Dvora , you are beautiful inside and out.
My parents aslo made aliyah in the 80's and we lived next to the Schwartzbaums in Bayit vegan, they are/were such special people, as ncie as can be, so normal and humble, real greatness

I lived in Israel for a year. Israeli society is very different from American society. Americans will refrain from saying anything too intrusive or prejudiced whereas Israelis dont self-censor. (Although on the Internet, Americans have no problem being vulgar, stupid, idiotic, hateful, or crazy).

I always wondered what happened to her, and it is so beautiful and inspiring to hear her story from her directly. My daughter and son-in-law Heaven bless them adopted a little new born Latina girl (i am Latina as is my daughter, her husband is Anglo-American), and they love her so much, and so do I. She brings us such joy and I tell her she is a bracha that Heaven sent us Baruch Hashem.

What a tremendous person! And her parents too! I always try to think of ways to make living a Torah life exciting for my kid. I am really inspired by the story of her father buying her candy and what an impact that may have had on her loving shabbos. I decided I want to iy”H let my kid choose a nosh every Sunday ( or Wednesday if Sunday is too long for him:) ) to save for shabbos. I will never forget your father!! When I was in Neve, one day I had a rough morning and I saw another employee and he asked me how I was and I said, “well I spent the morning crying but other than that I’m great.” That man said, “oh that’s not good…crying shows an inability to deal with life…” I walked away feeling terrible. Then I saw your father and he asked me how I was (with his big smile and blue sparkling eyes) and I responded exactly the same as I did with the first man and your father said to me, “OH THATS GREAT YOU SHOULD DO THAT MORE OFTEN ITS CATHARTIC!” I loved talking with your father we would crack up together. He signed my copy of the Bamboo Cradle something like “may you be blessed to handle life’s vicissitudes…” or something along those lines lol I had to look that word up! Unfortunately I don’t have all positive memories from my time at Neve but EVERY single interaction I had with your father was beaming with positivity, he was really an incredible human being and they were incredibly lucky to have him there. I met you there very briefly you stopped by to say hi to your father, you had maybe one baby maybe two, you wouldn’t remember because it was a split second and we barely smiled at each other before your father had to go. Rabbi Yaakov Levi and your father were my favorites! Anyway best of luck!

Thank you for sharing your story Devorah. Be encouraged I think in grade school we all go through a season of being bullied. I was bullied in the 6th grade and I looked like everyone around me. It wounds us but in that season I learned to find comfort in the words of David in the Tehillim. That has continued into adulthood. Shabbat is my favorite, too.

Had great play pals growing up out on the west coast in Frisco, Comiefornia, one was Jewish talked with him last month and the other Catholic, now passed away and me being a Protestant Episcopalian. Also, many Asian friends and then being drafted after college and sent by Libtard Johnson to South East Asia where I had many more Asian friends in the Armies. God Bless.

This is an evil world. However, people adopting children from ANYWHERE is not proof. Adoption is proof that there is love and goodness in the world.
How many African children call you "Mom" or "Dad"? How many Asian or Hispanic or white or black American children have you adopted?
Have you spent any time researching the relative difficulties of international adoptions? They are not all equally open to foreign adoption, interracial adoption, parents of other religions, do not have the same costs or time frames, etc. Even in the US, the National Association of Black Social Workers is openly opposed to white populations adopting black children.
Finally, to simply answer your very negative inquiry, yes; Jews do adopt children other than white and Asian. And..... shocker: Some Jews even ARE African.

From 1940 almost till 1960 Israeli government stole kids from multi children family and give them to Jews who came from Europe after WW2 because they couldn't have kids.
Kids who been stolen came from Yemen's Iraqi
Moroccan Jews and Muslims family.
From this we can learn Jews love and adopt any kids.

In Israel I met an Afro-Brazilian woman who had been adopted as a baby by a Jewish couple (the mother was from New York and the father from South Africa). She was a teacher in Israel.

I don't think they were setting out to adopt a Chinese girl - it just happened. While it was not a formal adoption per se, look up who the foster parents of Louis Armstrong were, as well as the origin of his nickname Satchmo and the fact that he was a fluent Yiddish speaker.

I'm asian with asian features like Devorah and life in Yerushalayim as a bais yaakov frum girl and a convert was a great challenge with all the stares and comments from strangers and also the fact that we have to keep explaining ourselves is tiring. I can feel Devorah's story to the core! But one thing my madj told me is that the fact that with all those hardships we didn't stop becoming frum and we continue doing it makes H' so proud of us! and so much reward and happiness will come iy'h . Great interview! Brings back memories of the summer of 1988 when I went on a post high school graduation trip to Israel. Devorah’s Dad A”H spoke to our group and I read the Bamboo Cradle. I was so in awe and inspired by Devorah and her family. With all my own insecurities at the time, it never occurred to me how hard the struggle would be to be an Asian Bais Yaakov girl in Israel.

@@gfygfy9512 I have never looked into this but believe that adoption by Jewish couples is the same as in non-Jewish ones. I don't think it has to do with being Jewish or Christian or anything but more like a personal choice.

People aren't shopping for a new car or sofa, it's a child.
We would also think it was morally wrong for a couple to have a foster aborted just because it's skin color wasn't dark or light enough.

@@gfygfy9512 Adopting a child is serious business and there are serveral things to consider by a desiring couple. I am sorry to hear your statistics. Children come in all shape and sizes, likewise Jews so there is no room for discrimation or racism in Judaism.

In usa, I know less religious jewish people that adopted black kids and special needs kids
Every countrr has their own rules about adopting kids to usa. Some require you live in that country for a time period before a adopting. Some countries want a donation that not everyone is able to give. Some countries won't let usa adopt their kids.
Foreign Adoption is not as easy as domestic adoption.

Just wanted to say that I don't think Devora's dad had a choice about taking her in the train station , because she was such an adorable baby. I am Israeli , secular. I really liked the book "The Bamboo cradle" ,and having been an outsider at school- I could really feel for Devora. Her diary at the end of the book brought me to tears. How wonderful it is that Am Israel is so diverse. Dvora , you are beautiful inside and out.
My parents aslo made aliyah in the 80's and we lived next to the Schwartzbaums in Bayit vegan, they are/were such special people, as ncie as can be, so normal and humble, real greatness

I lived in Israel for a year.
Israeli society is very different from American society. Americans will refrain from saying anything too intrusive or prejudiced whereas Israelis dont self-censor.
(Although on the Internet, Americans have no problem being vulgar, stupid, idiotic, hateful, or crazy).
I guess they are venting fo some reason, not everyone can keep it cool, I specifically suffer a condition as well dat may me seem scary but trust me I'm no crook..
I am 77 years old and a member of the LDS faith. I also have 5 handsome sons and 2 beautiful daughters. I loved hearing your wonderful, inspiring words. I want you to know that my husband and I support Israel. I am so thankful your family is being raised to honor our Father in Heaven ( I don’t know if you say the name…) and raised with good values and deep love. That is what will heal the world.

I always wondered what happened to her, and it is so beautiful and inspiring to hear her story from her directly. My daughter and son-in-law Heaven bless them adopted a little new born Latina girl (i am Latina as is my daughter, her husband is Anglo-American), and they love her so much, and so do I. She brings us such joy and I tell her she is a bracha that Heaven sent us Baruch Hashem.

I always try to think of ways to make living a Torah life exciting for my kid. I am really inspired by the story of her father buying her candy and what an impact that may have had on her loving shabbos. I decided I want to iy”H let my kid choose a nosh every Sunday ( or Wednesday if Sunday is too long for him:) ) to save for shabbos. I would love if he looks forward to it the same way Devorah did and does.

I will never forget your father!! When I was in Neve, one day I had a rough morning and I saw another employee and he asked me how I was and I said, “well I spent the morning crying but other than that I’m great.” That man said, “oh that’s not good…crying shows an inability to deal with life…” I walked away feeling terrible. Then I saw your father and he asked me how I was (with his big smile and blue sparkling eyes) and I responded exactly the same as I did with the first man and your father said to me, “OH THATS GREAT YOU SHOULD DO THAT MORE OFTEN ITS CATHARTIC!” I loved talking with your father we would crack up together. He signed my copy of the Bamboo Cradle something like “may you be blessed to handle life’s vicissitudes…” or something along those lines lol I had to look that word up! Unfortunately I don’t have all positive memories from my time at Neve but EVERY single interaction I had with your father was beaming with positivity, he was really an incredible human being and they were incredibly lucky to have him there. I met you there very briefly you stopped by to say hi to your father, you had maybe one baby maybe two, you wouldn’t remember because it was a split second and we barely smiled at each other before your father had to go. Rabbi Yaakov Levi and your father were my favorites! Anyway best of luck!

Thank you for sharing your story Devorah. Be encouraged I think in grade school we all go through a season of being bullied. I was bullied in the 6th grade and I looked like everyone around me. It wounds us but in that season I learned to find comfort in the words of David in the Tehillim. That has continued into adulthood. Shabbat is my favorite, too.

Had great play pals growing up out on the west coast in Frisco, Comiefornia, one was Jewish talked with him last month and the other Catholic, now passed away and me being a Protestant Episcopalian. Also, many Asian friends and then being drafted after college and sent by Libtard Johnson to South East Asia where I had many more Asian friends in the Armies. God Bless.

I wonder if my daughter will feel like her mother felt as she also has many frum close relatives. My family also suffered racism/bullying in Beis Yaakov JLM being Mizrachi. They also went to Beit Yaackov Hayashan but would have been a few years younger than Devorah.

I find it confusing. Taiwan is Taiwan. China is the mainland. My neighbours, while growing up in Cape Town, we're Chinese from from Taiwan. Their family had fled from the mainland.
