As a Ducks/Leafs fan I've been screaming from the rooftop that Stolarz is a hidden gem. This is a solid tandem.
I really want all Leafs fans to hear this. There's stuff to worry about with this team. Leafs fans are worrying WAY too much about the goaltending right now. They're so flush with competent goaltending they let a reliable third stringer walk. There are teams with better goaltending no doubt, a good few, but there are basically no teams with as much luxury to choose and goalie depth as the Leafs have right now.
Also we get to finally see Hildeby play NHL games and finish his development in the big leagues. That's something to be excited about. It's been a while since the Leafs were in this position (especially because Woll, people seem to forget, didn't get this luxury. He was thrust straight out of the AHL into a brutal playoffs series).

Question was brought up, Craig Berube. My question might be slightly different. When you saw the game (if not knowing who was the coach) was it obvious that the team was playing differently? Was today's style look better and the type of style that you want to see them play? Not knowing how Montreal played or were they left in the standings last year, did Montreal play today like a playoff appearance team? If not, what does that say for a team that was second last year in most goals for? What happened to the double hat trick center earning over 13 million a year? I mentioned that because, first, I don't want the above to sound negative or insulting. Just wondering about expectations for this year and a question to request an NHL change? It appeared to me the Leafs were playing more of an equal opportunity team (lack of a better word). They all participated in shooting at the net as a team as they should. Almost playing a just get one goal theory to win the game because you just need one goal to win (which if so, is correct play). Good defense is the best way to play and it isn't just one goal to win but one more than the opponent. Which if that is how they will play, it will take time to get there. What change might be required? If everyone is contributing equally, shouldn't they all earn the same? Should it be a team salary cap or a player salary cap?

First game of the season not going to put much into it but did it not give off playoff vibes. The way it ended with us completely dominating, coming really close to tying it and overall should have won it because the Leafs were the much better team but losing by 1 goal and getting goalied. Felt like the outline of a playoff game for us, however it can't happen that the offense is unable to put up a minimum of 2 goals a game and go 0 for 4 on the powerplay with how top heavy the PP1 unit is, just felt like i was watching a game 8 against a way weaker Boston Bruins

I love how Steve assumes that the Panthers actually have diehard fans who follow their team closely. I bought $20 seats at their arena for 2nd round playoff games. You’d be hard pressed to find people there who can tell you who Verhaeghe is, let alone his contract terms

so I was watching this game in a DT bar here where I live and the owner of the bar who just so happened to come out and watch with us (good guy too) and he said "Yeah they got 42 shots probably going to get 50 but most of those are from the outside (this is with about 8 minutes left)" And TBH HE'S RIGHT! Good grief so many of those shots were from the top of the circle like they think they're Ovi!
Auston Matthews scored 69 goals last year, and has scored 60 twice in his career.
empty calories shots, guys were turtling in front of montelbum all night. in a game like this scoring chances matter more and i think toronto had like..one. i'm not counting the OEL nonsense. montreal had 20 shots and probably 12 of them were scoring chances. against a team with any players that woulda been a blow out.

Didn't see the whole game, but the highlights showed the Leafs hitting the post a couple of times, and the rest of the time all the real estate they had to shoot with was tight angles. Seemed like easy saves for Montembeault.
No “Maximum Domi” in the intro is disappointing!
Goaltending was good. Leafs defense was full of holes. Montreal just insisted on trying the most convoluted trick passes between peoples legs and sticks instead of clear lines and shooting more
