Always had a soft spot for these. Was an alien green one just like this on the forecourt when I bought my first car back in '14. Fell in love with it right there but could never insure it at 19. I'l have one one day, in that colour.👌👽
I bought my 197 around 5 months ago and it works like a clock 0 issues but previous owner spent a fortune tackling all those issues that you are talking about. Great video!
Great video and very informative! i’ve owned one now for over 4 years and all of the issues you mentioned are definitely true as Ive experienced nearly all of them myself 😂. I too fitted the toyosport manifold as well as it makes sense to, to add, I have also fitted the vibra-technics engine mounts as the toyosport manifold knocks against the subframe under moderate acceleration on oem engine mounts.
I have a clio 197 had it about 9 years now I also have a 172 cup both fun cars to drive. Every single issue you mentioned I got changed on the car thankfully mostly through auto care I bought with the car. I also got the gearbox replaced through auto care. I am tempted now to move on to a megane 250/265/275 was in one at croft last year was impressed how good it was on the track.
chris carenduff usher has a meg 250 now and absolutely swears by it. I’ve drove it myself and it’s a great bit of kit. The clios are great fun but they do lack in the power department. A mapped meg 250 has plenty get up and go

Just passed by this vid again mate. Ended up picking up a megane 275 trophy liquid yellow, had it 8 month now what a capable car. Bonus also managed to hang onto the 197 and the 172 Cup too 🤣👍
I've a 2010 rs200 cup pack in red these things handle like nothing else very underrated car , been totally reliable could do with a touch more power but otherwise I love it .
Yes I've read all about the gearbox issues mines fine @ 68000 miles I think you just have to be a little easy on the shifting through the gears when you're on it , it's a great close gearbox saying that .
Had my alien green just over a month and already spent about 2k on it. My list so far is 4 performance sparks and coils as one went so replaced the lot made sense. Silencer went so had to replace that. Next is the brake calipers we're sieved and brake fluid was brown, replaced all discs and pads and put some premium continental tyres on and new fluid. Car broke yet again turns out it was the main lambda sensor so just fixed that. I don't think this is the end of the nightmare but I'm determined to get this car back to great condition it seems its just had one or 2 bad owners so I'm fixing what they've done. Anything else I should expect next. 😅
Hey mate, cool video full of tech help with youre obvious in depth experience! Only point to consider from.an observer, is you're gaze at the lens. It's far more engaging to the end user if you're looking at the lens and therefore you're looking at them. Top work though cheers!
Memory serves me right basic cup all came with keys (not key cards) different door cards (speaker grills were flat and not raised), all cups came with red calipers, Basic Cup pack was stiffer suspension, red calipers, quicker steering rack, then full fat clio's/cups, zenon headlights keyless entry and Recaro's if you had deep pockets RS Tuning for me all day long, he's the go to guy If you can live with all the shitty faults and electrical gremlins these cars have then you will have smiles of fun. Drive nothing else.
I've got a 200 cup in white it's been a cracking motor. I did have the kanagrooing situation but I got the map sensor changed and it's more smoother but then it does help to have an exhaust and air filter. I've not had the gearbox crunching yet and coming up to owning mine 2 years. Enjoyed the video and very informative to what to look out for etc.
Decent vid Ush. I've just taken my Storm Grey 200 off the road to get pretty much everything you've mentioned there so this is help of where to go for bits lol. Gearbox, It has a toyo manifold on but flexi has gone it's been on about 5yr, seat repair, timing belt, Got megane RS alloys to go on. The list goes on! Apparently there's only a few of the stormers left?!?
Cheers for the good video, I had a quick question, you mentioned about potentially replacing the manifold with a non Renault one, I was wondering if this would still allow the car to pass the mot? As from what I understand the manifold by Renault contains some sort of catalytic converter. I’ve had this issue for a while with the manifold but can’t bring my self to spending loads of money with Renault and would much rather spend 200 quid on an aftermarket one. Thank you in advance
Really like the look of these and always fancied one but had one trying to give me sport on a B road last month, was expecting to be left behind but I kept up on every bend and he slowed me down on the inclines, I was hanging out for a straight to take it (obv within speed limit) (standard MK2 Focus handling). Can only assume the driver was a bit weary or the car was a bag of bolts as it wasn't what I expected.

I have bought a 197, well looked after, handles really well, most major problems tackled, maybe gearbox because 3rd is a bit notchy, but maybe time for new box oil. In dry weather the car runs like a beast, but this morning in moisty damp weather it started right away but did not rev beyond 2000 rpm, after warming up it was fine. Engine does stall when I let it runs idle for a minute or two. I suspect an electrical problem in crank/camshaft sensor and maybe coils, but there is no CEL light. What do you guys think?
@@onthelimiter6529 could check that one, could be a mixture failure during cold start because the ECU does not use lambda sensor and fuel mapping until coolant is at correct temperature? Does Renault still use the big sensors screwed in the radiator?
I'm needing to get a couple dings of my clio 200 resprayed, and the full bumper resprayed. What do you think is the normal cost for a front bumper and a couple touch ups?
I own one of 2 rs200 clio sold in oman. I was lucky got it second hand from a guy who got it from dealer and spent a fortune with ktr upgrading it. The gearbox problem i believe was an error from renault that they didnt want too admit. the garages here are a nightmare and i often just purchase parts from uk. Do you know where i can purchase new seat foams. They seam very hard too get seat covers for this also . Its a shame the recaros are so prone too being worn out and the meterial so bad. Love my rs tho its a little monster.

Great looking cars but ive had big issues with them kangarooing with a flat spot after accelarating from 2nd gear on the two 200's ive driven - i know ive heard you can get this mapped out,but its just frustrating when you go to test drive one and its doing that. And you think,who has driven it over 80K miles with that issue still?
I dont want to get a car where you have to cable tie things in the engine though lol. I went back in my R26 after and it was so much better to drive. Maybe im too used to the boost way of driving hehe.
I’ve got a 197. Lately I’ve had a couple of issues. Firstly the car won’t get into gear when it’s idling or not moving, usually this occurs when I first start the car but the problem goes away when I drive and it warms up. So I don’t think it’s the clutch (shifts perfectly when I am moving). The other problem is whenever I turn on/off the car I hear the squeezing kind of noise coming from behind the radio/aircon region. Hard to explain the noise and not sure where it’s occurring. Doesn’t happen all the time though. The other thing is I’ve heard for these cars every 4 yrs u gotta change the timing belt, is this true or no?
Hi mate. If you google belt interval it will come up for you. The gear problem is a funny one. Never heard of that. Try bleeding clutch off and change box oil
Does it struggle shifting into first gear when the car is stationary? If it does then it is likely the clutch. The clutch on these are made of 2 plates pressed together, these tend to split which causes this issue.

I have a Liquid Yellow 2009 F1 Team Clio and I hope you are right about them going up in value. I chose the LY F1 firstly because it's my dream car and secondly because I feel it's going to be a collectors item one day. And just to correct you on the numbers, there were a few thousand of them made globally but I think the UK only got 500.
Hi, thank you for the video! I own a 200rs and recently some sort of metal on metal rubbing noise started to occur at about 2k-3k rpm and only on half-load of throttle. The noise comes from the right front corner of the car. Do you have any clue what could it be? You can only hear it from the inside and it’s driving me mad. Also the engine sometimes squeeks at idle, however, timing belt had been changed by previous owner after 30k miles so this issue should be covered. Thank you in advance for your help!

There is that many little things it is hard to diagnose. Best of taking to a garage. Check your engine mounts if there worn they increase pressure on the flexi
Had my Clio 200 Cup since new, kept up with maintenance and only thing it’s needed is suspension components which all cars do over time and a rear wiper motor. Better than BMW’s and VW’s I’ve had in the past!

Coolant temp issue maybe?

Engine software change, different head some say and shorter 1.2,3 gears. 200 cup is stiffer than 197 cup. Regular 200 is a bit softer.

Yes the flat spot is more so a problem on the 197 its annoying your right
Cable tie the mapp sensor so it’s tight that’s why it kangaroos easy and cheap problem solver 👍

Tbh tom its a hard one that... i would always take it to a specialist to have it diagnosed
Does it sound like a metallic rattle? If it does, it may be your manifold flexi joints have cracked and starting to leak.
I had same noise. It was a cracked manifold on mine.
How common is it to find a 197/200 with a TomTom?

I own 2008 197 and when i accelerate hard i hear a slight knocking grind noise. Can it be the manifold??

Laurie Aldam i owned a Clío 182 years ago and it was one of the most reliable cars for me. Maybe the quality subsequently changed.
