i watched danny ritchie do a video on super tweeters awhile back and took his advice and pointed them straight up thus avoiding the phase dilemma. superb results. they definitely add a sense of place and 'air' to most music. just got a deal ,$900, on the elac ref towers which arrive soon. may add these down the road. nice job of explaining the details of set up. its not simple if you point then at the sweet spot.
Somebody suggested to reverse polarity to solve the phase problem (connecting the positive pole to the negative and the negative to the positive), just try
Randy, if you are genuinely interested in keeping an octopus, keep in mind they are highly intelligent and need constant mental stimulation. I've heard theories that they don't live as long in captivity, in part, to the fact that they can get bored with "small" enclosures easily.
Thanks Randy for the great review. I think you explaining the setup process will help a lot of people from thinking set it and forget it. Now if I just had superman hearing instead of old man hearing these would be perfect.
In some of the best clubs (old and the few that are now currently still in operation for at least 5 yrs) have super tweeters. It widens dead areas in the club but most importantly heightens the senses. It's a great compliment to a system with a sub. It brings back memories as a child when 4 way and 5 way systems were the norm. I can't wait to try this in the home environment.
PS, would it make a difference if I use a speaker selector that allows both to run them when I wanted? It might be better for hook up, comparing, and an even tidier look(?)
I just got mine and it added just a touch of sparkle to the sound, but it added a phenomenal sense of air and openness to the sound. Make sure they're as close to ear level as possible.
If you have a teenage son I recommend just ignoring the missing socks. Seriously, don't even ask. (Unless you're having his girlfriend over for dinner, that would be a great time to bring it up.)
Did you get comb filtering when faced inline with the front drivers? Rear is apparently the best placement. I am still researching and not sure which one to get and where to place !!!
Hey randy. Everyone must remember also that mix and match of drivers are more complicated than it seems. Having installed alot of passive and active systems sometimes they just dont sonically match. There are sensitivity issues, impedance etc. So its really a trial and error unless someone has tried and experimented with it. The best tweets will not necessarily match the best woofer. Thank you randy
true but ime the highs are much easier to work with. puttting an ear to this tweeter makes you realize how little recognizable sound it emits. i point mine straight up and use an l pad on my diy supers. wouldnt impedance on this be a non issue as they use so little power?
Possibly I'm wrong, but if you need a 900€ for a subwoofer to add lower frequency to your setup and 1000€ for an aluminum supertweeter to add good high frequency, maybe you would need just to sell you speakers and buy a good one with the same amount of money.
Hi Cheap audio man!! Polk fixed my order for the Reserve 200s that they flagged and canceled for fraud yesterday and gave me a 20% discount on them that saved me 105 dollars. And my Reserve 200s are shipping out of Tennessee to Oklahoma and will hopefully show up tomorrow . 🙏
Loving your style Randy. Instant subscription and I have some of these supertweeters coming to add to my Tannoy XTF6 floorstanders and Tannoy 8 inch sub. Happy listening from Derbyshire
After 23 years, in 2023 I bought thin-film AMT ribbon tweeter speaker GoldenEar BRX and I love them so much that I bought a 3rd one as the center speaker for the home teater. source=Apple Music lossless
In my secondary audio room I use the teac S300-neo which has a playback frequency range 55Hz to 33,000Hz. I supplement the low end with a sealed subwoofer. There is a bit more air in the highs in this system vs my main system that only goes to 22khz. So an alternative would be a tweeter that goes way beyond the 20khz range. The new Teac S300-hr is underrated. The upper range goes to 55khz. In Japan their audio scene is a bit different than the US/UK/AU.
I had a Realistic Super Tweeter in the eighties, and it was pretty good, one of their best products, I wish I still had it. I used the supertweeter with a pair of Wharfdale Diamonds, one of the original models. It sounded great, the good bass on the Wharfdale and the extended treble on the Realistic super's matched very, very well.
I've had dreams of owning an octopus. I would have clear tubes going around the house so it could follow us around the house, and watch TV with us. It's not weird! Lol
Very informative. I have been interested in audio since 1973 and never heard of a stand alone "super tweeter" before. It would be fun to experiment with those tweeters...
One Sock Jack’s is a well known front for a widespread sock theft operation. Oh yeah, it’s like the old hubcap scam where the local shop just happens to have your missing hubcap that was stolen when you parked in the street. I Would suggest a causal link between One Sock Jack’s inventory and the local laundromat. If socks go missing at home...see if the kids are reading new comic books.
A speaker which i really enjoy looking at is the Strauss Elektroakustik NF 3 studio monitor.. they look like they have a super tweeter on top.. i read a lot about this speaker and will never own it.. but it looks really cool and here is the place i finaly get to tell someone about it :-)
I have a tweeter that plays up to 30K Hz., but I build my own crossover. Though these tweeters advertised to play as low as 800-Hz Not trusting that claim so I crossover at 1250 Hz. It plays very well! My point if you avoid DIY than YES buy a super tweeter and it definitely will elevate your listening pleasure!
I have super tweeters and i cannot tell the difference when they are either on or off they don’t seem to output a lot certainly not at the same output as the speakers tweeters. Speakers are Focal Aria 926. The Super Tweeters are Aspire ribbon’s 8 ohms ,150watts.
I'm very interested in trying super tweeters. The snob HT guys or audiophiles look down on it but I'd like to try it. Aperion does have some nice ones.
Loving the Diamond 11.4s that I got because of you! I have them hooked up to a Marantz NR1200. I'm still playing with positioning a little bit, any tips? Still waiting on that review ;)
We need subwoofers because we can hear below 40,50,60hz. We don’t generally need supertweeters because most of us Adults cant hear above the speakers response. Obvious, i know. Are you sure you don’t just hear a boost in the overlapping xover region?
I like the high end of my Tekton Lores, but I've also owned speakers that might have benefited from a super tweeter. Great video, you should watch the movie, "My Octopus Teacher."
Any considerations with using certain amps with these? It must change the load the amp sees. Is the amp now seeing a 14 ohm load then? Does that effect the sound level or change the speakers efficiency ratings?
Think Subs are more ubiquitous because there are still audible frequencies below where most speakers can go. Not really true of tweeters as vast majority can deliver frequencies well above 20k
Listened to a pair of Canton towers today.. the highs were amazing making me wonder if a set of super tweeters might be useful but them again it might just be my room.
Hi - I got my Aperion Audio MKII Planar Magnetic Flat Ribbon Super Tweeter delivered today and I connected it to my Monitor Audio Bronze BX2 speakers. For some reason I can't get output from the tweeters. I have connected the same way as advised. Plese can you advise?
Fantastic intro. But when it comes to super tweeters: I believe you when you say that you got a fantastic, exciting result. But I can not understand how to avoid comb filters, diffractions and misalignment - even if you place it so the diaphragm is flush with the speaker's treble. The wavelengths a supertweeter produces are so short that there MUST be more or less clutter when sound with the same wavelength from the supertweeter and the speaker's treble is mixed. This can be avoided with subwoofers because the wavelengths a subwoofer produces are many meters long. So I think the exciting result you get with a super tweeter must come with a mixed dose of distortion. But by all means. Distortion can be an exciting spice that provides a good experience - regardless of what the joyless objectivists claim.
Do what Randy says: time align them "by ear", moving them fore and aft. You have to play with them to get them right. But that's part of the fun. If some don't want to fool around a little they probably are not for them.
I had the first generation of these that had the different gain selector. On top of my Uni-fi towers. I really wanted to like them. No matter where I put them, pointed them, and set the gain they just were so quiet. Oh I even tried to use two channels from my AVR. I wonder if the new gain selector can provide more volume?
I'd say you not supposed to hear supertweeters themselves but rather some sound effect they may provide. Like more airy and effortless sound in a room.
I think if it looked more like say the B&W 800's or the Triangle Genese Trio's (tubular) tweeter it would be much more attractive perched on top the speakers. Btw, way way back when I was a kid Realistic (Radio Shack) use to sell metal super tweeters. Those looked cool and made a big difference. They're still out there and look just like the Pyramid brand on Parts Express for $26 bucks. Good review 👍🏽
It’s amazing at what is out there that we didn’t know that was out there but thanks to you being the awesome cheap man you are we are learning and being educated thank you sir
If one of the tweeters in my vintage speakers is kaput and replacements are super hard to fine, would a pair of super tweeters help remedy the situation please?
Before anyone goes out and buys something like this I highly recommend running an online tone generator. I'm a professional pilot and have to have my hearing tested yearly. I have good hearing but my sensitivity drops to almost nothing even just to above 12k. Even the lowest crossover setting of 8k there is so little content at and above that point. Unless you are a beagle I would argue that super tweeters are on the verge of snake oil. Sure, they do actually do something, I just don't think that even IF you can hear well at the upper end of the frequency spectrum, that they would make little to ANY impact on your listening experience.
1:12 I was let down. I was so disappointed. I had my emotions raised up all the way through the stratosphere, only to have them returned so quickly, that it ripped my soul out from my existence and sent into the earth. Oh, why, oh, why would you play with me, this was. I was expecting you, Randy, to show the world, that Bose was one of the top choices. At that moment instead of Bose cubes, I got super tweeters. Yeah, I love super tweeters, but I really really expected you to expose those Cubes. My expectations were let down so hard. That it was as if the Cubes might as been a cube of Tungsten. The cube of Tungsten is heavy, it has a coldness that I am left with after you build my expectations up to, and then slammed them back. I don’t recommend this product for my friends, or family, because they don’t need to feel the coldness, as it rolls throughout their existence, as if the cube of tungsten, seemingly transformed into them. Black hole stars recommend
yes. my upper frequency hearing isn't great but you'll still hear at those levels it will just take more amplification to do so. In essence that is what a hearing aid is. it's just boosting the frequencies more. so, this is kind of like a hearing aid for higher frequencies if that makes sense
@@cheapaudioman thanks! My frequency response curve is flat from 30hz to 20khz (+/- 2db), would this still help the SPL on the higher frequencies? Thanks in advance (I watch all your videos) 😁
You can’t that cheap 350.00 you can get a good bookshelf maybe but a hair brush not that much. LOL how about change your tweeter that you have I have elac 5.2 towers and not getting good high at all. Elac tell me I need more juice my Yamaha rx780 not doing the job. Keep up the good work Hood luck on full time.
Well it’s in parallel so it would actually reduce the impedance. However, since the tweeter is I know producing very high frequencies the affect on your amp is imperceptible.
Horses for courses? Both are OK. Look for Ron's demo of UNiFi 5.2. Listen to Darko's interview with Karl Finck. The Unifi if properly set up and fed with abundant clean power are nifty little three ways that soundstage incredibly well and disappear from the room. An Andrew Jones design. I enjoy my pair very much. The Wharfies are a bit V shaped in response. They have 'cheaped out' a little in looks from gen 11. No more curved sides. (were they there for cabinet stiffening, reducing internal resonances, eliminating sharp external edges to prevent diffraction, or simply for the "wow, upscale" look?) In any case they also have a very respectable signature: Karl H. Finck. I can't make a proper A/B as I don't have the Wharfies at hand (for the sake of scientific inquiry, of course) ;-) Randy seems to enjoy his 12's, but they are towers with more bass.
I got the Sony SSCS5 you recommended with the super tweeter and i notice how much nicer it sounds than the other muddy speakers I have bought before.
Same.Hairy mans fault 😁

Just give the octo his own sound system and blast Mozart.
They need to be taken out for walks just like a dog
And. They have 3 hearts!!!
Just don't be surprised if he escapes out of his enclosure multiple times
They do not live very long less than 2 years normally and there is no way to tell how old they are when you get it.
Thanks Randy for the great review. I think you explaining the setup process will help a lot of people from thinking set it and forget it. Now if I just had superman hearing instead of old man hearing these would be perfect.

Isn't there a possibility of negative tweeter interaction? Like if one becomes jealous of the other and they can't work it out...what happens then?

Octopus are really cool..... But not the easiest things to care for. I'd stick to cheap audio if I were you.....
I need these for my Elacs, Thanks.

Think Subs are more ubiquitous because there are still audible frequencies below where most speakers can go. Not really true of tweeters as vast majority can deliver frequencies well above 20k
Do you have any idea how to integrate a supertweeter with an original tweeter of your speaker properly? It's not as easy as it may seem.
Never heard of this. Cant imagine needing this with a Klipsch.

Also getting a slight hum in the audio.
I hear the hum too. I was thinking something was up with my phone until I saw your comment.
Hello, I own the Elac Unifi UB5 (First Gen.). Will I hear any difference with these? Are they worth adding them to the Elacs?

Kinda reminds me of the dbx expander which was a component vs a speaker... I miss my "dbx 3Bx Dynamic range expander"
This setup seems like a pain in the ass to get right.
If one of the tweeters in my vintage speakers is kaput and replacements are super hard to fine, would a pair of super tweeters help remedy the situation please?
Will these improve the sound of my Klipshorns?
(No, cheerless ones, I don't have Klipshorns and yes, I'm kidding. )
Oneac- power conditioner- It is in every hospital on every electrical device.

Can I buy one left sock. I am missing a left sock.
Will these make bad recordings with sibilant s sound worse. I guess they only work for reference recordings

Yuck.

Super tweeter has to go up to 100k or any tweeter ideally to 100k to feel it in the body senses not hearing plasma tweeters on the best

I think that they are for different listening tastes. The Wharfedales are a bit more rich through the midrange
One Sock Jack's...I can't be the only one.
Just curious but do you need a biwireable speaker for these?
Nope, just jump off the terminals of any speaker.
@@pinksky4801 so you are saying you can use bananas and spades on the same terminals?
@@michaelkaiser5994 Yup, that's what im going to end up doing
But once they cuddle with you.....it's forever........
I want to know what the hell happens when he gets an actual sponsor.
