Francis Ford Coppola: A Charlie Rose Conversation With the Filmmaker, 30 Years Ago

- Francis Ford Coppola is an extraordinary filmmaker. Just think of “The Godfather” and “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now” as three representatives of his genius. Like other great artists, not everything he does finds the audience, critics, or studios in agreement. His last film, “Megalopolis”, is clearly in that category. It premiered at Cannes in May 2024. Here is an interview with me from 1994,
30 years ago.
This is an enormous gift. In the 1990s, every midnight after returning from Stanford where I worked, I’d cuddle up with a blanket & watch Charlie Rose. 5 nights a week & it felt like Heaven! Welcome back to my world.
I'm so glad to find this channel. You were the best on PBS! And CBS.
I respect anyone who suceeds and decides to keep trying new things instead of repackagaing their old hits.
FFC is always learning, going forward and trying new things.
I have immense love and respect for him.
Outstanding interview!!
I so miss your interviews, Charlie.
I have a debt of gratitude with Charlie Rose. Back in the early 1990s I looked forward to listening to the CR hour on PBS with discipline, pen and paper handy. I recorded it and listened to it again. (I just ran into a handful of those homemade recordings). Understanding was the hardest part of learning English as a second language. I used to think, "one day I will run into him" as I was lucky to meet a handful of "movers and shakers" as the terrific Hartnell Community College Dr. Mooney used to say. She is no longer among the living. This is an excuse to tell her thank you too. Her larger than life spirit and her passion for teaching endures in those who attended her classes. In this conversation 15:48 Ford Coppola mentioned Conrad's Heart of Darkness; she thought it a masterpiece.
28:28 "The director’s latest [Megalopolis] is a great-man story about an architect, played by Adam Driver, driven by ideals and big plans. It’s a personal statement on an epic scale." NYTimes Review. Notice also👉 29:04 October 3 was Gore Vidal's birthday. He would have been 99.
Charlie is inappropriate around young ladies, glad he is off the air
@@JacksonJones-je9uk I owe him a significant and lasting debt of gratitude.
@@JacksonJones-je9uk That does not change the role he has in my life. Not one bit.
good interview. you can feel how driven he was.
Truly; a model for all of us, because, after all, he still is!
I remember this. So interesting about his father and Toscanini
Interesting how he talks about a fresh new filmaker who could "come from anywhere"
Then in passing references "Reservoir Dogs"
Wish I could have talked to him after he watched "Pulp Fiction" for the first time and enjoyed the early parts of QT's career
This man is truly a nerd, and we need more passionate bad ass nerds to exist just like him
Francisco Ford Copola was dead on about a lot. What year was this?
The description says 1994.
Saw this years ago
Son filmine gitmeyeceğim galiba, yorumlar çok kötü

Megalopolis is a masterwork. The audience reception is further proof how boring audiences are nowadays
Who criticized The Godfather?
Cotton Club didn't do it for me.
The builder. Yes.
BOY, WAS THIS GUY WRONG ABOUT A WAVE OF SMALL FILMS MORE INTIMATE AND CHARACTERS...IT IS MARVEL HEROES AND AVATAR NOW.
He’s old he’s lost his touch
The Godfather One & Two (WHAT he was thinking with Three, do not know!) & Apocalypse Now were his Magnus Opus’
Happens when you go past 60
😔
Three was the best. Just when i thought I was out
