You've put so much work into this and I believe its paid off. Imho you've really captured his sound. Some years back I bought a little Silvertone Bobcat that had the original DeArmond foil pickups in it. I discovered why people love those pickups so much! I love that little projector amp. I like to tinker and repurpose old tube equipment like this and I got into building pedals, mostly clones of vintage pedals. Fun hobby. You've really have done a great job capturing Ry's sound. You should be proud.

WOW. Been fumblin', Stumblin', Tumblin', around for 45 years on Guitar and I'm quite aware of Ry Cooder, but I played a lot of heavy Stuff since '78 and with age comes wisdom, and Arthritis. So yeah, playing all kinds of more open and stuff with more feeling and mellower. Guitar can be very heavy even Clean, and Slow. Been wanting a Resonator/Parlor and dive into Slide.Was exposed to 2 older Brothers that played also and had Johnny Winters, Stones,Etc. I'm not a Ry Cooder fan, nor is my wife. I'm always interested in delay pedals though so I started watching this "Recommended For You" video and was taken aback by your killer sound. I cranked it up a bit and my wife came dancing down the hall from the kitchen and asked "What are you watching? That sounds REALLY good!" Man, if those are vintage Supro and Teisco pick-ups you're going to single-handedly put Seymour Duncan out of business. Well done, man. Well done indeed.
The older, budget Teisco-Kawai-Sakai etc. Japanese pickups have some good tones. Not for everyone, understandably. They don't look high tech enough for some people. But those in the know understand what they can deliver. They kick out a bit of treble if you want it. If you don't want the extra treble, that's what the tone control on the guitar is for. :-) Peace.

I use 1 delay on a Rockabilly Slap sound,2nd delay on a longer echo.Works great for replicating a doubling sound.Especially use 2 Amps in stereo & keeping 1 signal completely dry. Great video & utilization of the 3 delays.
@@TheGuitarShow I had a 90's Burgundy Boss Delay, and still use my all plastic 90's Arion stereo delay for a slap sound. Downsized to a 13 watt Class A Tube Fender Excelsior w/ 1 - 15 in the Amp. It only has high & low tone switch.One volume,1 tremolo on/off /speed knob.I use it on low or it's way brutal.The low has great harmonic overtones. I use a vintage Rat,a Ibanez ts9 Tube Screamer,& an MXR Distortion +. Also a 90's Blue Boss Chorus & that Arion Delay. It's loud enough to play anywhere.If not, I will bring my 65 Fender Twin & a 4 - 12 Cabinet & use the little Amp for a Stage Monitor.I play through an early 70's Les Paul Black Beauty.It came with coil taps & changed out the pickups around 95. Lead Pickup is a Seymour Dunkin PAF & a Dunkin Jazz Pickup in the neck.Loudest,clearest Pickups I ever heard . Rock On from Detroit! Kick Out The Jams M***** F*****s!

While all the effects used were expensive it's not impossible to do something similar using delays that can add a few db each if you set them to similar settings. Luckily it's usually units that do long times and complex delays that are most pricey and that's not needed. His guitar and amp do the heavy lifting for sure and they are harder to cheat on.

I'm a long time friend of James Demeter who has known Ry from the beginning of time. I was at Jim's house circa 1990 and Ry was there with his guitar. He had recently switched out the PAF that Jim had given him years ago for a pickup from an old guitar a "foil pickup" Ry started telling us this was it, way better than a PAF he said back in the day those guys didn't have no PAFs in their guitars they had these. Ry was there to get his guitar's volume knob replaced. Jim told me to go in the amp room where his mac was setup and show Ry this guitar re tuning app... So here I was... teaching Ry Cooder how to use this application on the Mac that would let you change the guitar tuning and it would show you the different way to get chord voicings and also show you different scales in that tuning... pretty cool for 1990. I duped a copy of the program and gave it to Ry. He then said that's great but you still have to know how to play the guitar. Then I knew I had one chance to ask him a question so I asked him what is it like to play with John Lee Hooker. Ry said "the thing is John changes chords when he feels like it so you have to pay attention and change with him. guys who don't get it get fired quick". I do know that Ry used to get old amplifiers from theaters and give them to Jim and he's convert them into guitar amps in the 1980s. Unfortunately we then ragged on Stevie Ray Vaughn who had just played on the tonight show and had a bad tone (I think he was playing through a Marshall and had turned it away from him because it was probably too loud) Stevie died like a week later and I felt awful gossiping about him....

Thank you. Very interesting and very helpful. But another important piece of gear in the snapshot of his setup is the variac. It would be a further service to your audience to explain the importance of a variac if you’re playing an older amp in places with higher line voltages Peace&Love
Thanks Rob - the variac in Rys rig has been gutted and the preamp stage of a LA2A compressor has been fitted with 2 tubes to feed 2 or 4 amps (Ry has both the 2 output and 4 output versions). Ill do a video on this device soon. Best, Ramon

3:28 the whole secret to his sound might just be that VARIAC in the top right. It can only be connected to the amp - variac regulates the voltage to the amp. Is it on his pedalboard because he changes the B+ in his amp during the gig?
Hi thanks for watching. Its actually not a variac it was just built in the housing of an old variac. It splits the signal in 2 using 2 tubes and has a master volume to control the volume of the amps
As much as I love Ry Cooder and have been a huge fan of his for years, I really hate it when people use the word "best". Muddy Waters used to say "you cain't be the best, you can only be a good 'un". Tagging one guy as "the best slide player" leaves out other notables such as Sonny Landreth, and Dave Hole [edit: I originally forgot to mention Johnny Winter, shame on me!]; and also leaves out lap steel players such as David Lindley, Cindy Cashdollar, and Megan Lovell, dobro players such as Jerry Douglas, and so on. Let's just say they're all on the A-list, and leave it at that! By the way, when I saw Cooder play last summer, he was using a Premier 88 amplifier, a small Fender tweed amp, and two Standel amps. The Green Man preamp (housed in a variac) was on a pedestal, up off of the floor for easy access. [Another edit: I should have mentioned a few other good slide players: Arlen Roth, and Duke Levine, are both excellent players; and John Mooney is another one, whose touch, tone and note choices are decidly idiosyncratic ...]

@@georgeeldridge7954 , Derek Trucks is not really a favorite of mine....a good player but still very much in the Allman Brother's mode, albeit with some Indian influences. I wouldn't call him revolutionary anyway (though I quite like his wife, Susan Tedeschi, and have for years, she's a good guitarist and a very good singer). Sonny Landreth, on the other hand, has, in my opinion, raised the bar for what is possible from slide guitar; in a more just world he would be as famous as Hendrix. Cooder, of course, is a whole different kind of rootsy player ---- his technique may not be revolutionary, but his tone, and the emotion built into it, his "feel", is nearly impossible to ignore or deny. And without him, I probably would never have heard of, or listened to, blues originators and titans such as Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Blake, Tampa Red, Charlie Patton, Sleepy John Estes and so on. Nor would I have become a John Hiatt fan, which started because Cooder played on "Bring the Family"; and it was Hiatt's "Slow Turning" that introduced me to Sonny Landreth's playing......So I, and probably all of us, are indebted to Cooder.
NIce playing. Would like to hear that OVerdrive pedal on is own too. I am still searching for my "overdrive" sound. Haven't found anything I am completely happy with.
@@TheGuitarShow wow...yeah ..lovely sounding pedal with the Strat. I have a Japanese Strat that I really like ..maybe one day I will come across one of those pedals!!!. I have a Custom Gibson ES335 reissue Fat Neck that I use mostly ....and still searching for an overdrive for that . Right now I have a Tone Burst Mesa that is not bad. I guess it is tweaking between the amp and through some other pedals that I might find "my sound"!!!. Its fun though trying different things..just got to keep the cost down!!! I had a Danish overdrive pedal that I heard on the Internet ...but ended up using it on my Acoustic guitar for solos...just turn down the overdrive alot and it acts as a boost..and gives it a nice sound when I play lead over something I have looped like Riders On The Storm!!!
You are as close as anything I have heard. Lately he seems to have gone even deeper into dist/fuzz that has a horn flavor to it. I would love to get that figured out. Thanks.
A lot of Cooder's stuff is in Open D, although I have seen a couple vids where Cooder is playing in Open G. The guy in this vid here is playing in Open D also, at least at the start.

It would be really cool if you could try to achieve the tone just using inexpensive, mass produced pedals you can buy anywhere. Just as an experiment. Great vid ✌🏼
Buy a Zoom MS70CDR. They are really inexpensive, and have 140 effects, and you can chain up to 6 at a time. By mixing different effects in the pedal I've created oil can delay effects (with 2 echos + Vibrato, or with a single double delay that has vibrato modulation), as well as Vibratone style pitch-shifting Tremolo (Tremolo in sync with a Vibrato), random lo-fi tape wobble (3 Vibratos at different speed), and tons of other cool effects I could never afford to buy as stand-alone boutique pedals.
Sonny is awesome. Derek Trucks insanely good. Jack Pearson is so good it’s just ridiculous. But Ry Cooder towers above them all … what an absolute genius

That’s an amazing story. I got to see my hero twice in two days a couple years ago. He played at the Vancouver island music fest here I’ve been there many times and they always get top performers. I’ve never heard more audience appreciation. What a show. Thanks for your story
Thank you. Very interesting and very helpful. But another important piece of gear in the snapshot of his setup is the variac. It would be a further service to your audience to explain the importance of a variac if you’re playing an older amp in places with higher line voltages

Thanks Rob - the variac in Rys rig has been gutted and the preamp stage of a LA2A compressor has been fitted with 2 tubes to feed 2 or 4 amps (Ry has both the 2 output and 4 output versions). Ill do a video on this device soon. Best, Ramon

3:28 the whole secret to his sound might just be that VARIAC in the top right. It can only be connected to the amp - variac regulates the voltage to the amp. Is it on his pedalboard because he changes the B+ in his amp during the gig?
Hi thanks for watching. Its actually not a variac it was just built in the housing of an old variac. It splits the signal in 2 using 2 tubes and has a master volume to control the volume of the amps
Yes he may use the Variac to reduce the mains input voltage to his main amp this will cause some distortion effects I've heard some people do this

As much as I love Ry Cooder and have been a huge fan of his for years, I really hate it when people use the word "best". Muddy Waters used to say "you cain't be the best, you can only be a good 'un". Tagging one guy as "the best slide player" leaves out other notables such as Sonny Landreth, and Dave Hole [edit: I originally forgot to mention Johnny Winter, shame on me!]; and also leaves out lap steel players such as David Lindley, Cindy Cashdollar, and Megan Lovell, dobro players such as Jerry Douglas, and so on. Let's just say they're all on the A-list, and leave it at that!
By the way, when I saw Cooder play last summer, he was using a Premier 88 amplifier, a small Fender tweed amp, and two Standel amps. The Green Man preamp (housed in a variac) was on a pedestal, up off of the floor for easy access.
[Another edit: I should have mentioned a few other good slide players: Arlen Roth, and Duke Levine, are both excellent players; and John Mooney is another one, whose touch, tone and note choices are decidly idiosyncratic ...]

@@georgeeldridge7954 , Derek Trucks is not really a favorite of mine....a good player but still very much in the Allman Brother's mode, albeit with some Indian influences. I wouldn't call him revolutionary anyway (though I quite like his wife, Susan Tedeschi, and have for years, she's a good guitarist and a very good singer). Sonny Landreth, on the other hand, has, in my opinion, raised the bar for what is possible from slide guitar; in a more just world he would be as famous as Hendrix. Cooder, of course, is a whole different kind of rootsy player ---- his technique may not be revolutionary, but his tone, and the emotion built into it, his "feel", is nearly impossible to ignore or deny. And without him, I probably would never have heard of, or listened to, blues originators and titans such as Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Blake, Tampa Red, Charlie Patton, Sleepy John Estes and so on. Nor would I have become a John Hiatt fan, which started because Cooder played on "Bring the Family"; and it was Hiatt's "Slow Turning" that introduced me to Sonny Landreth's playing......So I, and probably all of us, are indebted to Cooder.

NIce playing. Would like to hear that OVerdrive pedal on is own too. I am still searching for my "overdrive" sound. Haven't found anything I am completely happy with.

@@TheGuitarShow wow...yeah ..lovely sounding pedal with the Strat. I have a Japanese Strat that I really like ..maybe one day I will come across one of those pedals!!!. I have a Custom Gibson ES335 reissue Fat Neck that I use mostly ....and still searching for an overdrive for that . Right now I have a Tone Burst Mesa that is not bad. I guess it is tweaking between the amp and through some other pedals that I might find "my sound"!!!. Its fun though trying different things..just got to keep the cost down!!! I had a Danish overdrive pedal that I heard on the Internet ...but ended up using it on my Acoustic guitar for solos...just turn down the overdrive alot and it acts as a boost..and gives it a nice sound when I play lead over something I have looped like Riders On The Storm!!!

A lot of Cooder's stuff is in Open D, although I have seen a couple vids where Cooder is playing in Open G. The guy in this vid here is playing in Open D also, at least at the start.

It would be really cool if you could try to achieve the tone just using inexpensive, mass produced pedals you can buy anywhere. Just as an experiment.

Buy a Zoom MS70CDR. They are really inexpensive, and have 140 effects, and you can chain up to 6 at a time. By mixing different effects in the pedal I've created oil can delay effects (with 2 echos + Vibrato, or with a single double delay that has vibrato modulation), as well as Vibratone style pitch-shifting Tremolo (Tremolo in sync with a Vibrato), random lo-fi tape wobble (3 Vibratos at different speed), and tons of other cool effects I could never afford to buy as stand-alone boutique pedals.
Any recommendations for a replacement for the hard to find quicksilver?

Yes higher action to start off with is better and you might be okay with the low frets
