I legit think they should make a film about Sylvester and the end of the classic series like they did with An Adventure in Space and Time
That is an inspired idea.
@@johnmacintyre3051 Who could play McCoy though? The man himself is no spring chicken.
@@tomnorton4277well......... there's always david tenant, if he can do Sylvester's voice than I'm sure he'd be perfect
_This_ one freaked me out as a kid. The totally 'realistic' location setting and ordinary people doing ordinary things. And the electric guitar stings punctuated the fear factor here, too.
Ace: bringing NuWho-like character to a DW companion before it was cool.
Edit: Not saying the Classic companions before her didn't have character - the original TARDIS team is my personal favourite. And yes I have watched Classic Who... Around 60% of it so far.
Ben and Polly too
Jonny Swales yes you could say she was the prototype for New Who female companions.
TFW you’ve never seen the classic series
Bio
They all had character (well, most of 'em!), but what they did with Ace was to give her a character arc. It's amazing how much she developed in basically two short seasons.
The soundtrack for this episode is amazing. Dominic Glynn and Keff McCulloch's music is one of the best parts of McCoy's era
Keff not Jeff. I assume it was auto correct as usual.
@@youngbutretro4228 Yes it was, thanks for reminding me
Don't forget Mark Ayres, who I thought wrote the best scores of the McCoy era (Greatest Show, Ghost Light and Fenric).
@@ftumschk very true
"come on Ace we've got work to do"
This episode captures the strange haze of English summer sundays so well it’s uncanny
Spot-on and well put, as well as 1989 was the beginning of the end of the Cold War era 89-91. Things have moved on at a mind boggling pace with mobile phones/internet etc.
@Asa Fisher At least before this virus in a strange sort of way. But I did forget to mention cable TV.
Sundays are the same all over the world... Always boring
@@johnthwaites5976 my nan died on a Sunday soooooo
@@johnthwaites5976
Let's agree to disagree
Sylvester McCoy sauntering down the street like he's just bought it.
What is great about it is that Ace comes full circle. She makes it back to Perivale. It completes her arc.
I'm watching this in a brief pause in listening to Sophie Aldred's At Childhood's End. That story is very much inspired by Survival.
The scenes here with people being taken are a good example of how NOT seeing things can be more effective than seeing things. The 1st time you watch the beginning of Survival you're left wondering what are people seeing to elicit such a reaction.
Great story, with the added meta fictional irony of the title being the last story of the classic series.....and being cancelled and then surviving, ultimately evolving.....
Seems like yesterday, blink & it's 31 years later.. I ❤️ Sylvester & Sophie, they both look so good and are so relaxed in their characters.. Plus Ainley's Master, always a joy to watch.. Blissful
Antony Ainley - my Master ( :
More close to 30 years
@@hothemeep1219 transmitted in November 1989, episode 3 was December 6th 1989
@@hothemeep1219 I am a nerd sorry

Ace's line about TV On Sundays is so Ironic now
Yep, Sunday night telly's been rubbish since towards the end of the 80s IMO.
I think Survival had a sort of melancholy quality to it all the way through, which is kind of apt considering it turned out to be the last of the original run.
A friend of mine actually owns that actual animatronic cat from this story.
Oh yeah, back in the late 80s I wanted Sophie Aldred to have my babies, and 30 odd years later, having met her at a comic con, I still would.
I live in Perivale, and I can confirm it.
Was that cat Salem, Sabrina’s cat?!
Yup. The animatronic was reused for that series.
I remember missing one of the episodes of Survival because I had a Drama rehearsal and I set the video wrong. I never got to see it until DVD years later.
My kids don't understand that if you missed a programme back then, you missed it (Unless you had a video) it was rarely repeated. I missed an episode of Robin of Sherwood in 1984 and didn't see that until I bought the VHS ten years later.
Season 26 went to some dark places...
...like Perivale ;)
@@ftumschk Ghost Light Dun Dun Derrrrr !!!!
This oddly reminds me of Fear Her
But better, at least imo
Ace's epic roast of Sundays though.
The animatronic "Kitling" is as hysterical now as it was in 1989!
"Survival" wasn't a bad story tbf! British comedy duo Hale and Pace as shop keepers, Lisa Bowerman's Karra, Stuntman Tip Tipping doubling for Sylvester McCoy's motorbike joust, Doctor/Master fisticuffs and the "Cities Made Of Song" speech that was tacked on cuz it was decided to end it for 6 years!
It’s weird to think that he’s still so young in this story
I’ve always liked this story, I know the cat costumes aren’t great but overall it’s a darkly brooding story. The final scene has added poignancy as it was the last Dr Who scene of the original series.
yes and when they filmed it I don't think they were aware that it would be the last episode
mrjekyll andhyde thats true, there was a 1993 dr who anniversary video and no one knew it was cancelled, Sylvester described it as very short sighted. It “continued” in the way of the new adventure novels.
I’ve met Sylvester McCoy. Rather nice guy.
damn, didn't know that Ace is so "fine" :o
I miss this type of cinematography
I'll admit when I first started watching Classic Who I was not a fan of McCoy as The Doctor, but after watching more of his Era he is now in my Top 5 favorite Doctors.
He got much better after they toned down the comedy. Which might have been odd for a naturally funny man like McCoy, but it worked for him and it worked for Jon Pertwee, who was renowned for his comedy roles but (wisely) played his Doctor straight.
Mine Too
Top 4
He is the fatherly Doctor.
The last classic who story...
Squicx I like to think that the 1996 TV movie was the end of the classic era.
Stephen Murphy true actually
@@stephenmurphy2212 I agree, but the movie was made with a different production team and values, in a style designed to appeal to a wider (USA) audience. I think it's safe to say that "Survival" was the last broadcast story of Classic Who that had been made in the traditional manner.
ftumschk Or how about Dimensions In Time (1993)?
@@stephenmurphy2212 I'd rather forget about Dimensions in Time ;) Seriously, though, it's a one-off for charidee, not a proper Doctor Who (or EastEnders!) story.
I love the old TV episodes that didn't rely so much on special effects
me too
I’m from just north of Perivale (Harrow). And nothing ever happens here.
I love these highlight clips
This is just to celebrate the season 26 blu Ray release
@@laaiqhameed848 I know
I used to work in a warehouse in Perivale - can confirm
"You pick the one day of the week you can't even get a decent television programme"
I guess Ace knew about Chibnall Who XD
Four years after this story I was asking myself if Ivanova was a descendant of Ace.
The last story before the 1996 movie.
Demons run, when a good man goes to war.
Night will fall and drown the sun, when a good man goes to war.
Friendship dies an true love lies, when good man goes to war.
Night will fall and the dark will rise.
When good man goes to war.
Demons run, but count the cost.
The battel is won, but the child is lost.
I just watch this like I must watch the episode again
I just want to know where to watch classic-Who
Anyone notice the painted over lock and handle on the back of the TARDIS?
The next time I saw Sylvester McCoy in anything was in The Hobbit as Radagast the brown
I'm glad McCoy got that role. Few of the Classic Doctors made it big after leaving Doctor Who.
What's so bad about Perivale indeed? They have a village blacksmith after all.
*When I'm absolutely fuming and someone talks to me after:* 3:10
"If anything ever happens in Perivale, I'm Lord Nelson!!"
One of my favourite stories!
Ace:Nothing Ever Happens in Perivale.
Finale of longest Science Fictions Show Ever:Am I Joke For You?
Love the love for the 7th doctor
I swear (deservedly) Sylvester gets mor love than he used to...............same goes for my man Colin Baker
@@mrjekyllandhyde9941 colin has, I love that as he is one of my favourites
@@AaronBallvideos yeah as one of my favorites too (and one of the doctors I grew up with) I'm glad he's finally getting the respect he always deserved.
@Asa Fisher true, I'd say he's the most unappreciated
@Asa Fisher Lol yeah there had to be something
It's the Hale and Pace episode Lol
Does anybody know the name of this episode?
dr has turned into Sherlock Holmes - what the hell
dr who ending with this story was a shock after 26 years but it was a good thing in retrospect and the year dr who ended I became 20 years old and I wish I had been older than 20 and preferably aged 25 26 27 28 29 30 or even older if I had become 30 in the late eighties it would have been better
Is it even possible to watch Dr. Who episodes from the beginning in your life?
I wish it were in german, so I can watch every episode.
Ace was well fit
Love This One
1:20 I had to double-check that the woman in the background was wearing a shirt.
Whatever happened to 'I never land on Sundays'?
In real life, I don't like far from Perivale. Beautiful area in the borough of Ealing!
"you tricked me this is Perivale !!!!"
I wish all classic doctor who episodes would be online for free. But I didn't find them yet.
And would like to watch them in order.
And I know that dailymotion has a few classic doctor who episodes but I don't like dailymotion because the site can be slow at times.
Right now it's raining in Perivale.
Raining everywhere. April showers
Sooo...... does nothing ever happen in perivale then
cheetah people!!! cheetah people!!! cheetah people!!!
cheetah!master!!!!!!
I am the cheeetah master and you will obey me !!!
It's a shame that Classic Who came to an end here. It would've been interesting to see what 90's Who looked like
I've wondered that too
BeenAwayForever
I came here because I actually live in Perivale!
That cat !
Was it borrowed from Sabrina?
Something I can’t explain!
I love the way the music add a dramatic effect when we see the cat on the wall for the first time ^^
What have they been feeding that cat ?
A flerkin in Dr Whk
always wanted to say this
"retched cats, get out of my weeds"
No it’s not
What?
but what if it is ?
