I love pink Floyd and David Gilmour, you gotta just respect this bloke!
Roger Waters was the angsty one who generally came up with the concepts and lyrics, David was the soul, his guitar solos, almost like the “better angel” over one of the shoulders. I respect the genius of both of them. But for me, David was the magical part. And he’s still got it. He’s not a great lyricist. His wife has been writing many of his lyrics for the last 30 years, but she’s no Yoko. His daughter Romany also has a big role in his newest work. The dude is nearly 80, and he’s earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants. Both on this album and his last one, there is a lot of footage of how involved he is with his musicians and the production. You can love it or think it’s meh, but you can’t doubt his passion and involvement. His voice still sounds amazing, and his guitar work I think is more on point than it has been since the 70s. The solos are briefer, and will gain more life when he performs them live in a couple of months, but they are also perfect and for me somehow represents the spirit of a man who still has things to say, but knows he doesn’t have a lot of time left to say it, so he just gets straight to the point. We can argue about the most technically gifted guitarists or the ones who made the most impact. There isn’t really a wrong answer to that. But David has been my favorite since I was 12 and still is. His guitar literally makes me cry at times.

You have them mixed up a bit. Roger Waters was a lyricist bassist with the non melodic singing style. David is the higher-pitched smoother voice to which you were referring, his voice has considerably deepened with age, but still very nice here.
