I was on the bus the other day with my boyfriend & this woman thought we were doing bsl, even though we didn't know anything in sign language. Me, my boyfriend & her all had a lovely, emotional conversation. I didn't realise until a bit later on in the conversation this woman was deaf & I think in actual fact she had got the impression we were too. The conversation was amazing that day and she explained about how she got bullied when she was younger because she had problems with her hearing. Even though the communication between us was different and difficult, she opened up to us and we learnt she had depression and I told her how I did too. She was in tears at that time and I gave her a hug. It was our stop so we had to get off but she had told me everything is going to be okay and that we were lovely people. I'll never forget that day, her name was Zoe.

I work in Home Bargains and there's a deaf couple I serve regularly. The lady can lip read and respond to me, so we can still communicate, but I'd love to learn sign language to make it easier for them both to communicate with me. If there's already a video for helpful phrases that help within retail jobs, I'd hugely appreciate someone directing me to it. If not, it would be a hugely helpful video!

That is very nice of you and I do applaud you for doing so, but just check with your manager first if that is ok because there is a chance that you could get sacked for using a language that your colleagues do not understand. As ridiculous and prejudiced as this sounds, especially as it comes under a disability/customer service thing, I know of so many people who have lost their jobs because they have either spoken foreign languages or tried to use sign language to help customers... Apparently it comes under 'security' which is understandable to some extent, but also bullshit.
Just giving you a heads up, not having a go :) xx Either way good luck with learning sign language!

I worked in the NHS before retiring and the ability to speak multiple languages as well as sign was prized as it allowed us to communicate directly with our patients. I don't understand why anyone would be annoyed/angry/threatened by other people speaking a different language or signing around them. are they so self-important or paranoid that they think the other people are talking about them. I can't think why any manager in a service environment (be it retail or health) that would object to an employee being able to talk to a customer or client.

I had a appointment with the headteacher at a school in chelmsford nearly twenty five years ago . I was a apointed as a VIP Vistor . The headteacher had given me a guided tour of the school . He was very professional and the pupils at the school where very polite and well behaved . One school pupil was lost but the headteacher told him where to go by British Sign Language . I was totally sursprised i did not know that the school was teaching Deaf children . It was a fantasic experience for me to see BSL in a school enivroment . That is something i will never forget in my life . I wish i could learn the BSL it is a wonderfull skill to learn . I am now 45 and my life of learning is getting harder .

It really helps that the person demonstrating sign also is a clear lip-speaker - So many (a large percentage) hearing-impaired people never grew up learning sign but can lip-read. Too often deaf translators/interpreters are almost impossible to lip-read

#LoveBSL I'm learning because my step dad is going deaf and I love being able to speak to deaf customers in my shop... What I want to learn is more colloquial language such as "long time no see" or expressive such as "crikey" or "oh my goodness" or even just some slang that BSL uses, I know no slang whatsoever so learning a bit may make me seen less formal to customers

I'm trying to learn sign language not because anyone I know is deaf (in fact I haven't ever really met a deaf person before!) , but because I've seen how intelligent some deaf people are. I was watching a talent show and a man came on and he was a contemporary dancer and was so wonderful, the way he would dance to the vibrations. It made me really emotional. My mum also works at this place of disabled kids and is learning it because there's this one deaf kid she wants to communicate with. Another factor is that recently I've read a story about a guy trying to win over another guy he likes through sign language ! And I just thought how cool it would be if I were able to communicate with people that can't hear nor talk. It's a pretty cool strategy to have. I really admire people that know SL.

#loveBSL I've been trying to teach myself some sign language for work as there a few customers who come in with hearing difficulties. A gentleman was really surprised when I was able to ask him if he had finished and if I could clear his table.
I have an app to try and help but I'm not 100% sure if the words are in the correct order but if u could do a video for people who work in a shop.
Like can I get you anything.
    Is that everything.
Thank you this would be a great help.

I decided I wanted to learn this recently. I woek in Waitrose. A regular customer has a deaf son, he's 8. I copied "goodbye, see you next week" from the sign interpetor on late night tv, and signed it at him, and his (and his mother's) faces lit up. Later, my manager told me she'd said to him on her way out how touched she was that i'd done that. She said that most people don't even think to face him so he can try to lip read, they just talk louder or ignore him and just talk to her.
Now I find myself wanting to learn more, just because I don't want that kid to think the whole world doesn't care.

I am unilaterally deaf on my lead side. One of my favourite activities is Scuba Diving, my Doctor says that diving could make my right ear which is like 80% even worse. An implant nor a hearing aid will help me. So if my hearing does get worse at least I’ll have this to fall back on 😊

I am left-handed, but I learnt to sign right-handed. The reason was that I worked in a special school, and everyone else was right-handed. I felt if I was different it could confuse the children. There are also one or two signs that don't make sense done left-handed ( I can't remember which, now, though) I'm currently doing a council-run BSL course, which is this evening, so now I have to go!! 😀

I have always wanted to learn because I think it would be great to know, plus if you were ever out and someone was having difficulties, you could help. You could also communicate with those who know it if you were having a horrendously emotional day (like I do frequently being someone with mental health issues)

#loveBSL I'm learning to make it easier for me to communicate with my mum's friends children. She has twins that I help her look after occasionally but I want to try and help out more, they've just started school; one has down syndrome and the other has severe cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

We've recently been assigned a social worker (long story) and she is deaf, she brings her interpreter with her but we've all decided to pick up a few basic phrases in bsl.

They should do a class like this in school, me and another few kids have made it our mission to learn BSL as one of our friends is slowly going deaf (and we can talk to each other in classes )

This video is great, my only critical feed back would be to slow the movements down a little more for complete beginners!

#loveBSL it would be great if you could upload a video around horse riding.
I am a trainee coach at a riding school for people with special needs. We have two lovely deaf children and while we understand each other without me using BSL, I would love to learn a bit to communicate better and show my respect. :)

It would be good to learn, there is two certain people I would love to meet (fingers crossed) and they are deaf. I think they will be proud of me when I tell them I learned sign language just for them 😀 they play Connie and Kelly on the tv show The Walking Dead 😊 they are amazing. I would love to have a full conversation with them both at a convention.

Hi. I'm am hearing but would love to sign. These videos are a great help especially when you repeat signs or explain them slowly. My question is "does it matter if you change hands during signing. Would someone you are signing to expect you to be completely right handed or completely left handed? I tend to swap half way through a word.
