The distortion is a significant issue for me, and the main reason I don't pick a Pimax up. I loaned one for a week and was amazed by how much distortion impacted the experience. It's there all the time on the sides, and even on the top and bottom. The distortion profiles are improving all the time, so I've heard, so hopefully they can rectify this issue in time. This approach of 'brute-forcing' FOV in this manner will always result in distortion however, and for some people it's almost unuseable because of it. Some people hate screen-door, others hate god-rays, but for me distortion is the biggest issue and is a constant reminder I'm wearing the headset rather than being immersed in a virtual world.
That's really odd. I hear there are some variations in some headsets, sounds like the one you tried was defective, maybe slightly mis-aligned lenses. Either that, or you didn't try swapping the thick or thin foam as it can make a huge difference. I dont know why Pimax doesn't add a eye relief adjuster considering 2mm of depth can make such a world if difference.
@@TrevorJones1 I'm not sure it's that odd as I've heard from numerous people that the distortion issues are inherrent with the device. However, I am also aware from various other, trusted, people that they experience very little distortion too. I did try the thicker foam (in a way, I sort of put spacers in there to test it) and I can confirm it reduced distortion but didn't completely remove it. The other factor here is that, by introducing the spacer, you are effectively reducing the FOV anyway and mostly just removing the distorted sections. I'm happy people get the FOV increase with no distortion, but I definitely believe that using these ultra-canted ,and wide displays, there will always be a limited amount of distortion correction that is ever going to be possible.

Better resolution, latency and refresh rate do not outweight the feeling of being completely wireless and thus free, at least for me. Hopefully 2021 or 2022 we will finally see good wireless solutions.
Tip from me to others with this VR headset. For users with SMAS, and don't have the money for the upgraded audio strap. • If you keep your Velcro that came with the headset which bound the headset's cables... (my headset had this, which I'm sure other people should have too) • ...then check if your headphones can fit over your VR strap, while wearing the VR obviously. Just make sure that it doesn't apply too much stress, which depends on the Headphones. • You can use the Velcro to tie the headphone's headband to the adjustment strap on the SMAS, since it also uses Velcro. I do with with my Audio Technica ATH m20x headphones.
The head strap is from the htc vive pro and i must say it is better than index strap if you want to have it as tight as possible and still want comfort over hours of active playing
I wouldn't compare the 5K super to the Vive Pro 2. The 5K super has 2560x1440 per eye, which is spread over a wide FOV. Vive Pro 2 has 2448x2448 per eye. If the Pro 2 had the same wide lenses as a Pimax headset, it would have a resolution of 3560x2448 per eye which is closer to the Pimax 8KX
IPD is wrong it's not actually what they say on the website many people know that they lie about the IPD range on the headsets. 5k on the pimax 5k super is misleading slightly. 5k on the pimax headsets mean 2560 horizontal and 1440p vertical which is essentially a valve index with more horizontal fov which means in perceived visual resolution it's lower than the quest2. And 5k on the vive pro 2 is 2448 vertical and 2448 horizontal with a wider fov than most current headsets. The PPI/PPD on the vive pro 2 is actually pimax 8k x level. Most of the issues with pimax headsets have been fixed over the many years they have been plagued with them
My 5K Super has been very plug and play as well, more than a FFB wheel! And that's shocking to me given how involved VR is vs a Wheel that should be straightforward.
The Pimax Experience is basically PiTool in VR, where you can see the results of your changes immediately. That's what makes it great. As for audio, I really like the KDMAS headphones - the standard MAS audio is utter crap, but KDMAS fixed all the problems for me.

PSA: If you have to wear glasses in VR, a Pimax Headset is *not* for you. The 5k Super especially, as it only comes with the 11mm thin foam that has barely any space for glasses, but even the 15mm foam (included with the 8k X and available as a seperate purchase for other Pimax headsets too) put's your face too close for glasses. I'd also not recommend extending the distance either as you'd quickly introduce excessive distortions and in my experience, at the point where my glasses did fit, I was left with an FOV barely larger then the Index with godrays shining at me from the edge of each lens. One thing I should also mention is that Pimax headsets tend to be rather dim compared to other headsets. In my experience, both units I had were comparable to something like maybe 60% or 70% of brightness on my Index. You get used to it, but going back to my Index at 130% or my Vive Pro felt like an immediate improvement. And yes, I did have the brightness set to 100% in PiTool. 0/10 can not recommend.
This all sounds great... but unless there's some way of making this wireless, I'm not interested. At least for me, that should be the starting point for VR, being wireless.
With the bandwidth and latency issues, wireless isn't ready yet, so it *can't* be the starting point; it's more like the ultimate end-point. The Vive Pro 2, for example, has the best wireless VR you can get right now. It requires a dedicated PC card and a high-bandwidth broadcaster that has to have direct line-of-sight with the receiver at all times, so needs to be mounted high on a wall...but even with that the resolution is basically halved when using wireless, with the refresh maxed out at 90hz instead of the 120hz the headset supports. For me, I like wireless, I like using my Quest as a stand-alone headset for exercising. But I wouldn't give up the Pimax wide FOV over wireless ever, it's just WAY more immersive.
@@Dreamwriter4242 That sounds like problems that need solving, but it doesn't negate what I said. For me, being wireless is a _requirement_ for immersion. VR with a cable is simply no fun. I am constantly aware of the cable and it ruins the whole thing. At least that's been my experience.

I was thinking about this but I don't know if 1440p with the huge fov is a good idea. That's screen door effect city. The resolution is not "slightly" higher. Look at vertical resolution too. The Vive Pro 2 has 2448 vertical resolution while the pimax has 1440. Not to mention bigger fov means closer to the screen which is an increased sde.

The 5K super has similar resolution and screendoor effect with the Index. A 5K super is worth it if you want that much wider FOV at up to 160Hz and Index level FOV at 180Hz.

Yes, this is because it is running at 4k per eye, but 4k plus 4k does not make 8k. Its clever marketing like I said in the 8k x video. But they're not the first company to do that and certainly not the last.

Not very large at all xD I often joke about it being about a 1 meter squared cube, however in reality it is a bit bigger than that. Not by much though.
Pretty much all HMD support adding 2 SteamVR Tracking wireless devices. Typically those low would be your controllers, but nothing is stopping you from using those two slots on pairing your trackers instead.
I can't wait till like 10 years later they'll be like "The new EXo-255 Picolus Headset is like the Pimax-5K Super. And that technology was from 10 years ago!"
So the headset for $800 then 4 bay stations to have 360 tracking another $400 and bay station tracked controllers $200+ so in total $1500 atleast............. Not mass consumer pricing.
Actually the resolution isn't actually 5k or 8k, it's got more pixels horizontal wise with 2560 x 1440 but less vertical wise. Resolution wise this is not anywhere close to any latest headset. It's got great FOV and Framerate though. Man talk about confusing people. 😕 Two steps forward, one step back.
Yeah it's why I put 5k in quotations. I even mentioned it quite a few times in the 8k video. Its more just clever marketing than anything else. But they aren't the first and they certainly won't be the last ;)
The problem is not the price of a headset for me really, it's more the price of getting base stations, controller and a PC that can fully supply the high refresh rate and graphics. I got a 1060 (notebook) It works good but I'm not going to get a lot out of it.
Please check the pimax history on customer support, it is not good. They have a bad reputation. I nearly bought a headset but pulled out due to what i was reading about other peoples experiences.
I mentioned it a few times in the video. I also spoke to them about it, as I said in the video, it is important to mention their bad history, however I review the device I have in my hands.
@@TheMysticle But then you multiple times say that 5k has better resolution than Quest 2 (it is not so) and it's a direct competitor for vice pro 2 (it's not) which is a narrow fov headset. You also said that small FOV of Pimax is similar to quest 2, while in fact it's wider. Way wider.
I said it feel like something "more like an Oculus Quest 2." 14:48 I give exact FOV and say it's comparable to Vive Pro 2 not Quest 2. Whether it competes with the Vive Pro 2? I think it does, whether you think it does is your opinion. It trades blows in terms of specs and is in the same price point. That's a competitor. As for resolution, Quest 2 has a resolution of 3840x1832 while Pimax 5K Super has a resolution of 5120x1440. Multiply them together and you get 7,034,880 Pixels for the Quest 2 and 7,372,800 Pixels for the Pimax, That's a higher resolution. I cannot find the exact PPD of the Pimax 5K super anywhere on their website so that might bring it down however I certainly enjoy it more then my Quest 2, except for the wire.
@@TheMysticle In terms of resolution and image quality it lags behind both Vive Pro2 and Quest 2. Games compatibility is also worse than on both mentioned headsets. The only thing it is better is FOV. But you won't be able to play shooters competitively with that resolution. Racing and flight sims? Absolutely yes (when they work). Casual games? Sure, but you'll notice pixels. Shooters? Nope. You'll get wrecked by any player that has better PPD headset from a distance. And advantage of higher FOV is not that high when you don't have time to rotate to shoot a camper. So praising pimax as much isn't justified. It's a cool secondary headset for games you want high FOV in or high refresh rate with lower FOV (and lower than competitors resolution). It's a bad headset if you play shooters on high level. Thanks for replying btw.
Who cares what u pay. I just made a fake profile and invited some random persons and joined some random groups. They can track and spy all they want cause it's not me. But the money that i saved buying that piece of technology for that price are all mine.
Index controllers are only $279, 2 base stations only costs $298. Some people like me already own both index controllers and base stations. SteamVR base stations and controllers have been out for over half a decade so plenty of people in the VR community probably own controllers and base stations.

Has anyone else is by link expired it says it shouldn’t expire until June 1 which I suppose it is already that date in China but it’s supposed to be June 1 US Pacific time
@@eighties8 I went straight to the website.
Review a Varjo XR-3 VR+Mixed Reality headset with retina displays
How big is your play space I'm very curious
Not very large at all xD I often joke about it being about a 1 meter squared cube, however in reality it is a bit bigger than that. Not by much though.
*Seeing the title* : *instant fear*
*Seeing the video* : oh so it's just pimax and still expensive, phew
Alright Oculus we need 200fov with 180hz for $300. or less. Get on it chop chop! Lol.
You already know they will make it happen xD Should we be worried though
The Mysticle: No issues running pimax 5k and 8kx with 5700XT
Me: **Cries in stutters with 3060ti on Og Vive**
Wait, i can use trackers without the dongles at all?
Pretty much all HMD support adding 2 SteamVR Tracking wireless devices. Typically those low would be your controllers, but nothing is stopping you from using those two slots on pairing your trackers instead.
I can't wait till like 10 years later they'll be like "The new EXo-255 Picolus Headset is like the Pimax-5K Super. And that technology was from 10 years ago!"
How much of a discount?
i wish they made a 500$ headset that's more like 500$ headset only and even if it's 150 fov.
They kinda do. It's called the artisan it's 170 fov and it's said to be better than all the other pimax headsets
@@Furiker wish he reviewed one. That'd be one headset a lot would genuinely be interested in
I thought AMD GPU's couldn't run Pimax 5k plus Headsetts
What was your first vr experience?
Question of the week- wait wrong youtuber
Sadly, I don't get it

Quick T Pose to assert mod dominance
hmm 5k super ...man is that yet another headset ...they will have 10 models pretty soon :P
I think by the end of 2021 4k 120 fresh rate should be a thing
Bigger is better in some ways but not in vr headsets
7.5M pixels (Pimax 5k super) vs 12M pixels (Vive Pro 2) is not a comparable display...
Imagine not being a mod
anything beyond 120 hz is extremely unnoticeable.
needs wireless and inside out tracking..thats only thing holding me back
Same. If it had that then I would pull the trigger. Money isn't even the issue.
The 5k if no Where near as sharp as the quest 2.
Quest 2 is sharp? Are we actually using the same headset?
i love my pimax 5k super.
Basil here ello mates
If only there was some way to make it wireless
Your specs are midrange AF u need like rtx 3090 for 8k 180fps
So the headset for $800 then 4 bay stations to have 360 tracking another $400 and bay station tracked controllers $200+ so in total $1500 atleast............. Not mass consumer pricing.
Still Quest 2 has more ppi when fov is considered. Similar situation to rift s and index.
vs other wired headsets sure it wins.
$800 is not a price i like lol
Sure won’t ever have enough money to buy it but uh ya know great
Actually the resolution isn't actually 5k or 8k, it's got more pixels horizontal wise with 2560 x 1440 but less vertical wise. Resolution wise this is not anywhere close to any latest headset. It's got great FOV and Framerate though.
Man talk about confusing people. 😕
Two steps forward, one step back.
Yeah it's why I put 5k in quotations. I even mentioned it quite a few times in the 8k video. Its more just clever marketing than anything else. But they aren't the first and they certainly won't be the last ;)
it is time to up the gpu game for pcvr
Be careful of the Dragon
i am broke
why are you doing this to me
i want an HMD without fresnel lenses 😏🙄☹️
$3500 and you got it
The problem is not the price of a headset for me really, it's more the price of getting base stations, controller and a PC that can fully supply the high refresh rate and graphics.
The oculus quest 2 is better overall plus I learned how to put the oculus in battery 🔋 saving mode
PLS PLS PLS PLS PLS make Q&A
ahh...
need gpu 1st, than maybe pimax XD
i would have many good sleps in vrchat
Sheeeesh
12:35 i see you in a room full of furries lol
i guess he is a furry, but does not draw attention to it
@@N0_Lie maybe, maybe not lol
Frick, and its on sale for 200 off right now.... sale ends tonight
I just bought it right now but only the headset. I’m buying the controllers and base stations later when I get more money
Heh. I beat the ping
So many lies about resolution here. Just check vertical resolution of Vive you're talking about and Pimax. Learn what PPD means.
I did say the resolution of the Vive Pro 2 was higher
I love this guy

The headset is too big that's not 2021 material
You’re forgetting about the $400 controllers and $400 bass stations so is this really affordable?
Oh yeah forgot about that need also a $1000 computer
If you love VR you'll find it. You still PAID with your Oculus, just not with money
1000 was 2019 price. Now a 3070 only costs 1200.
SteamVR base stations and controllers have been out for over half a decade so plenty of people in the VR community probably own controllers and base stations.
ok then
950$ 😬
