Salvaging items that are interesting, beautiful or useful from the trash is a good way of practicing low consumption, eco conscious lifestyle. People could give away the items in no buy groups, connecting to the community instead of throwing in the trash. But once they are put on the side of the dumpster, they will end up in the landfill or incinerated unless someone salvages them. So I do that when I happen to find something I like.
