Yo, Be prepared. This is a very deep rabbit hole. He has had hits in every decade since the 60's. He has been sick lately but was doing charity concerts just before covid in his early 70's
Yes he has amazing technique. Very few humans can sing like John. Blues, soul, Opera, power Ballard's, country and rock.
From Gethsemane to Black Dog he can truly sing anything and is a very humble nice guy to boot.
Beautiful!! ❤️ ✌️
It's a rabbit hole I've been travelling down for about the past 12 months. And more than happy to do so. It's Farnham day every day in my house. Only really discovered him about a year ago, so I've been bringing up and playing every video of John's that is on youtube. It's a goldmine. And I've found myself wishing he'd have sung more songs in the lower registers as well. Such an exceptional, unique and exquisite voice. 14.1.24. UK. E❤
Opera - Granada
Musical theatre - Gethsemane (from Jesus Christ Superstar)
Led Zeppelin cover - Black Dog (audio only)
AC/DC cover - It's a Long Way To The Top
And so many more greats. I have not heard a song by John Farnham that I don't like.
Enjoy the journey
Man is a vocal chameleon and complete performer. Are there better singers? Possibly. Are there singers with more range? Sure. Are there any that match the whole package? That’s a hard bar to clear.
He’s probably a tenor, and it’s probably more noticeable later in his career when he more or less retired that rasp. But, he’s quite comfortable singing across a massive range.
As for hard rock - he’s covered Led Zeppelin (Black Dog) and AC/DC (Long Way to the Top), He’s sung opera with Anthony Warlow, sang lead with the Little River Band for awhile, sung 80s movie montage music with his work on the RAD soundtrack, does a pretty damn good rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water, ballads, gospel, pop - does it all really.
For a man of his immense power, range and presence he really, REALLY shines when singing with others. His duets are all superb. Consummate performer.
Anyone new to John Farnham - just watch every single youtube clip - concerts, 50th birthday show, duets with Celine Dion and others, snatches of Jesus Christ superstar, his performances from the late teens onwards, rock, opera, country, even Old Mcdonald had a Farm. etc etc. There isn't one track that I don't love. I don't think you'll be disappointed. 19.10.23. UK. E❤
As the Australian's say he can sing 🔥🇭🇲
They may be right. Jury's out.
He sung this on one of his encores after 2 hours pumping it out… I was privileged to attend this concert… he is perfection live…
I've read that his vocal range is A2-G5. I just think he is phenomenal. There is so much you could react to. Yes, he can sing anything. 🙂
Heard Black Dog today and G5 was the high note. 🙏
Thanks for reacting to our John, He’s known as the voice in Aussie and he is loved by Aussies,This was a unbelievable concert what you see is what you get with John.Hopefully you’ll react to John more in the future. This concert is well worth watching he always gives 💯 percent
I gotta hear more! Thanks for sharing him with me! ✌️
Does Black Dog qualify as hard rock? He does that better than Robert Plant imo
@@andrewhall9175 yeah I would say so, have a look at his cover of AC/DC It’s a long way to the top with MSO, I’m sure you’ll love it
@@andrewhall9175 absolutely. And also prefer John's recording of It's a long way to the Top. It totally outdoes AC/Dc - amazing. John doesn't just give a concert performance, he throws a party and wants everyone to join in. You can't help loving this man and his voice.... 14.9.23. E❤
This concert I believe is 1989, John first performed his version(not asemphatic as this) around 1974; according to sources, John Lennon upon hearing this version is credited as saying "This is the way it was meant to be sung!". John also has done some memorable duets with both Australian and International artists, one in particular was with Australia's Olivia Newton John singing Please Don't Ask Me from The Main Event Concert; he also did a bluesy duet with Jimmy Barnes(From Cold Chisel) of a Sam & Dave song "When Something is Wrong With My Baby" from Jimmy's Soul Deep concert. John has the ability to sing most genres, even a bit of opera; he has also done musical theatre, most notably Gethsemane from the stage play Jesus Christ Superstar. He is an Australian icon and gem, a true gentleman of entertainment.
1974? I've never heard about that, can you elaborate?
1980 is the earliest version of John’s that I’m aware of - although he could have done it live in unrecorded performances earlier than that of course.
@@shmick6079 yeah I've always thought of it coming about around that late 70s don lane era when he was doing effectively a bunch of power ballads
He recorded it in July 1980, about 5 months before John Lennon died.
This is an encore performance at the end of a 2hr concert; if you check the performance of his signature song You're The Voice from this same concert, you'll understand the power and control let alone the steady strength of his voice. Welcome to the rabbit-hole that is part of the Australian music scene.
Near the end, not quite 'at the' end. There was another encore after this.
Great Reaction!!! Thank you so much for helping the world hear the special talent that is John Farnham!!! ✌✌✌ 🇦🇺
Yes, this is our John. Keep in mind this rendition of ‘Help’ was the encore after a 2 and a half hour concert. Amazing voice and a great human being.
He’s pretty awesome 👏
Then he backed it up with another encore after this. Amazing endurance!
Yo.. thanks for bringing us this live event - love Farnsey, he’s beyond an icon in Australia, and from everything I’ve read/seen, he’s also a really, really nice man. Last vid I saw him in was 2019, he was singing at a benefit concert to raise funds for ‘Fire Fight Australia’ (brush fires).. he was on stage with Brian May and Olivia Newton-John…. Still hitting all the notes at 70 yrs old! He’s since been diagnosed with cancer and had surgery to remove part of his jaw. Postings today suggested that he’s now cancer free (yeah)!!! Great analysis - as always… TY!
Oh dear I didn’t know all that. I’m sure that has comprised his singing abilities but more importantly he’s well. ❤️.
Olivia 💔
@@michaelgoyettemusic If you really want to hear what he can do you should listen to this recording of him and his band doing a sound check to Led Zepps "Black Dog". ruclips.net/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/видео.html
He never officially recorded it but luckily for posterity they kept the sound checks.
He could also do a ballad. ruclips.net/video/4PPvOhPspEA/видео.html "Burn for you" live.
But his biggest hit was "You're the voice" ruclips.net/video/6m2m_9Uijso/видео.html
Enjoy.
By all reports his singing ability has not been compromised. You should check out Black Dog, Granada, Gethsemane and even Old MacDonald!
If you wanna see some high notes check out “Gethsemane”
Edited with info from John's official site (replacing previous reposting from another post)
John's vocal range is described as:
LOWER range: A2-F3
HIGHER range: A4-G5
I've heard him going up to G5 fairly regularly, one was a G#5
@@devi_- Problem with me trusting another post.
Yeah almost everyone can hit a D5…..and F2 is really low for a tenor….. someone else said A2-B5 was his range. I just heard Black Dog and the high note was G5.
@@michaelgoyettemusic thanks, I looked it up instead of trusting another post and edited my comment. Cheers.
@@Bellas1717 that makes sense ✌️
I love watching your reactions, you obviously have the experience to appreciate our John! Thank you for reacting to him. If you haven't reacted to his warm up video of Black Dog, it will answer your question about if he can do rock. There is also John doing A.C.D.C's It's a long way to the top, in my opinion his version with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is better.
🫶the Goat‼️‼️
John's cover of Led Zepp's Black Dog is one you need to hear!!
I have a version that’s just audio…is that the right one?
I think only audio is available, as it was recorded during a sound check, not during a performance.
@@michaelgoyettemusic Yes, Mike. Just audio - but simply astounding!
You want high notes...check out him singing When the War is over 2003 version. Or When Something is Wrong with my Baby (duet with Jimmy Barnes)..he hits some crazy notes in that as well. (Hey hey its saturday version)
Oh he is mostly seen as a tenor
Vocal range is from mid 2nd octave to low 6th octave.
Yeah the tenor thing became obvious the more I heard it. I’ll be sure to check out one of those vids. ✌️
@@michaelgoyettemusicawesome. And you are right in that his voice lends itself to many genres. He is very versatile and everything he sings sounds like he is right in that lane.

@@carolynh8866great suggestions Carolyn! I’d also add Angels with Lisa Edwards to that list under Ballards but you’ve pretty much covered them all 😁
I watched Finding The Voice last night, omg it was absolutely brilliant 😭🤩
He is a master
Fact
Try When Something Is Wrong With My Baby (Hey Hey Its Saturday version). His duet with Jimmy Barnes. He can sing in about 29 different styles. He is the GOAT
Yes, has to be the Hey, Hey it’s Saturday version.
New Zealand has sheep….Australia has the GOAT. 😂
That’s crazy amount of styles! ✌️
Yes he can and does do all of those things.
And here’s a Yo for Hank for nonchalantly giving us all a nod
Hank will appreciate that! He’s a good boy!! ✌️ 😃
John is a tenor. And cam sing any genre as others have said. Lots to react to with John. ❤
Yo. You've done a few Jimmy Barnes songs so you could check out his duet with John Farnham (also featuring "Diesel" on guitar)
"when something is wrong with my baby" which is a 60's blues song by Sam&Dave. It is awesome!
Don't think there's any video footage but you find on YT some audio of John Farnham singing Led Zep's Black Dog.
He's done covers of both A long way to the top (ACDC) and Black Dog (Led Zep)
Our beautiful golden boy!!! the next one you should listen to is "When Something is wrong with your baby"
And it Twas an encore ❤ he loves jazz and Stevie wonder. Enjoy the rabbit hole 🎉🎉
Your gonna love this 🎸🎸
You’re right! ✌️
Have a listen to JF singing Black Dog😮you won’t be disappointed ‼️
The band was awesome too. Watch for the subtle cues.
I love it John and Jimmy are just pure joy to the ears we aussies have kept these 2 to our selfs for the longest time love to see the shocked and surprised expression from all the reactions but yes this is a massive rabbit hole or should i say wombat hole on how big and deep it can go
Great reaction. you are the first i have watched that has really recognised the change in tone of that last "help". thats my favourite note he hits this song.
That’s a money note right there!! ✌️
Yo! So, so very many brilliant performances to check out. One that seems to be overlooked a bit is LISTEN TO THE WIND. John is ALWAYS best singing LIVE, he interacts so well the audience & his band; is only happy when everyone has had a great time; an amazing entertainer/performer and human. Well worth watching to the end too; he always acknowledges his backing band etc. Try: Angels, Love's in need - acapella with his band; amazing too. I could go on forever with recommendations. It's just good to listen (and react) to everything John Farnham has done!
I love his duet with long time friend Olivia Newton John 'Please Don't Ask Me'
He was better live in this concert than on record. That was his encore after a 2 hr concert
Black Dog (a sound check that was recorded) or We Will Rock You (fronting Queen post Freddie's passing) for the hard rock, Gethsemane and/or Grenada (with Anthony Warlow) for the Opera, Angels (2000) for the comedy..
Watching the amazement on your face watching our John brings me such joy. Listen to When the War is over from The last time concert in 2003 ish.
You are right he can do anything you will not be disappointed reacting to him
Welcome to the incredible journey into our John Farnham simply the best singer ever. He can sing anything so much for you to unearth listen to Black Dog a warm up sound check ❤❤❤
Our wonderful JF is so adored hear in Oz. I have been lucky enough to see John live many times over the years. He is truly remarkable and never disappoints.
This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
This song is one of the last songs that he would sing at the end of the night after he had already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours.
Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing during the TV special, but it was also on the 4th or 5th night that he had sung like this.
Either way, it was one of multiple nights that he did this on January 4-10, 1989, so his voice is still worthy of the accolades.
Not many other singers can belt like that for even 2 or 3 nights without a rest.
And besides picking at the exact details or this exact performance, Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul.
A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also.
The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one.
-Burn For You..
ruclips.net/video/4PPvOhPspEA/видео.html
-Angels..
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.
JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years.
ruclips.net/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/видео.html
-Amazing Grace..
To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa.
This is Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field.
ruclips.net/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/видео.html
-Please Don't Ask Me..
This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well..
ruclips.net/video/2uV_tZODfK8/видео.html
-When Something Is Wrong With My Baby....
And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar.
ruclips.net/video/AU_bCchDWF4/видео.html
Or this version.
ruclips.net/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/видео.html
-When The War Is Over…
Possibly one of his greatest vocals.
ruclips.net/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/видео.html
-Or is the greatest.
Gethsemane..
ruclips.net/video/k5woMZtClhI/видео.html
-How about a mike test.
He has the power and ability to distort microphones, amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol
Black Dog.

Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.
This whole concert is unquestionably one of John’s greatest live performances ever. He is an absolutely phenomenal singer who can sing just about anything. John is just one of those performers who gives everything whilst on stage but who is also just a really nice guy who loves his family and who gave up his chance of full international stardom in his prime just so he could stay home with them. That is why he is still, and will always be, Australia’s heart. ❤️
John can sing anything from rock to opera. Can I suggest the following from the same concert:
You’re the Voice
It’s a Long Way to the Top (AC/DC cover)
Also Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Super Star
You may but if they are like this was….they will take 30 days to clear…. You’ll need to be patient. 🙏 ✌️
Yo, saw him live in the late 80's when he toured NZ with Billy Joel. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed.
He has, as far as I know, done pop, rock, soul, country and musical theatre.
Great meeting Hank. Glad you have found John Farnham. I grew up listening to him on the TV. Yo
While you were watching John, in Canada we were stuck with Anne Murray. I’m not sure how international she was though. You had it better though! 🍻
John would smile and just jump into a song and knock it out of the park. What a performer and entertainer.
Thank you, thank you! One of our best ever. Please go down the John Farnham rabbit hole. He can sing anything! You have made my day. Luv from Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️
You're right. John Farnham CAN sing anything. Hes amazing.
John's voice is off the charts. He truly is a much loved Aussie icon. He can sing so many different genres. Take a look at John's cover of Black Dog, audio only as it was only done as a sound check, or Burn for you, a beautiful ballad. By the way he's a tenor. If you want to see him venturing into opera, check out John Farnham and Anthony Warlow singing Granada from a concert called The Main Event.
If your thinking country listen to his song 🎵 chain reaction. John is just about the best of the best Aussies. Listen to your the voice. He's been one of our best since the late 60ies. The best live artist I've ever seen ❤️🔥💗💝💖love John farnham.
You NEED to hear him singing Black Dog by Led Zeppelin AS A warm up. No video exists only audio because a member of the crew hit record and captured the audio. Be prepared to be blown away
Aussies love some John Farnham, unfortunately he may never sing again after losing a part if his jaw to cancer. I dont know how much but im hopong its minimal and he will return to the stage. Hes been singing my whole life
Yo, that was fabulous. Amazing voice. 💛
Kiwi here rest assured he is absolutely adored here in New Zealand too!
I love the Kiwis!!! One of my favorite girlfriends was from Wellington…. Sarah Harding? You know her? 😆
The Man, The Legend THE VOICE, OUTSTANDING!!!!!
The more you go down the John Farnham rabbit hole the more amazed you’ll be. I believe he has sung up to a g5, but don’t quote me on that. John has an extraordinary voice that we’ve had the pleasure of for over 50 years. This concert in particular was epic and you could react to every song and be surprised by his epic voice. John can and has sung anything and even sung with Anthony warlow(Australian opera singer) and in this concert did an epic version of it’s a long way to the top(AC/DC) cover.
I was so disappointed when I did this reaction a month ago and it got blocked (first time)….I contested it and 30 days later won by default….glad I could get it out finally and now I can continue down the rabbit hole! Much respect for his talent!!
✌️ ❤️
Long Way to The Top with the Melbourne Symphony orchestra!
❤welcome❤ to the world of our John.
Fasten your seat belt!
No one back in the 80s that who had heard Johnny was one of the best performers in the world.
He had a following mostly in the UK Europe and Oz
The Voice was a big hit here in Canada too.
Thank you for reacting to the amazing John Farnham! His vocal range is incredible!
Singers react.. lol.. Not a dry seat in the house.. watching vocal coaches lose their s*(&) watching this is very entertaining. I have read that even 'the beatles' were impressed with this version. Luv your smile throughout the entire song. Very genuine! Maybe - Something is wrong with my Baby - Jimmy Barnes/John Farnham - might interest you. Very Blues/Soul.
Johnny is indeed our national treasure ❤
Yo! 29s in & I love that you pronounced Melbourne correctly! Thank you! Most Americans say “Mel-born” when it is “Mel-burn”. Kudos!
I’ve had plenty of Aussie friends over the years….living in ski towns and London. ✌️
Black dog led zep cover , audio only no vid is just stunning 😮
Hey Michael, great reaction thanks.
If you want to hear a great example of Farnesy's range, you really need to listen to his version of LZ's Black Dog. You won't find any video of it as it was only a 'sound-check' that his sound engineer had the initiative to record so we can all hear it. It's epic.
Yes he can sing Opera with Anthony Warlow as well as his warm up song of Led Zeplin Black Dog that will blow your mind.
To be fair, you're absolutely right. He can do different genres of music and his voice just fits for it.
Yep….he can connect his vocal chords in a variety of ways so it isn’t surprising. ✌️
That one "bluesy" note at the end -! The one where he almost squashes it, then let's it out both sides under great control - total mastery of his vocals and range. Magic. Electric magic. I'm not good at explaining music - I hope I've done this justice. Jan. '24. UK. E❤
Yes! You picked my favourite note! John Farnham is incredible. I have loved everything he has done and have been privileged to watch him live.
The information I have is that he only ever performed this for an audience once. John's audiences ranged from 8 to 80, where this song tends to appeal to a narrower audience. It did eventually make it onto one of his Anthology albums. This exists because one of his sound techs hit record (1994 I believe). As you're listening, consider this. It wasn't rehearsed for a performance, it's basically a jam session. Also points to unbelievable skill of his band.
ruclips.net/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/видео.html (Black Dog. His warm up/sound check)
Is there a version with video?
@@michaelgoyettemusicunfortunately not as this was recorded by a sound engineer during a sound check. But the quality is extraordinary...many think it's even better the LZ as his band is crazy good as well
Jeff is talking about John Farnham's cover of Led Zeppelin's BLACK DOG. Sound only but EPIC!
Hard core LZ fans will claim Plant is better (they’re deaf), but on the band, there’s no debate. John’s band are several classes better.
@@jeffwilson7100there wasn’t a note Plant hit that John didn’t, but people have different preferences for tone etc (I did a comparison of the two on my channel a while back).
Ooooof this is a massive warren you’re about to enter. John is the greatest male singer I’ve seen live. He can actually sing anything from Classical/Opera to Soul to Black Dod LED Zeplin, hcover of Black Dog is amazing. Yo
He is an ICON. A legend. Best male vocalist in the world. Every single time I hear him sing I cry tears of joy. ❤
Yeah, that note towards the end is just filthy. Love it. Check out his duet with Olivia Newton John called Please Don't Ask Me. Great chemistry. Enjoy the ride ✌️
I love Olivia!!! ✌️
You will love that song. Great voices, great friends over the years, absolutely unbelievable chemistry. And Granada with Anthony Warlow to verify his operatic cred.
Farnham is simply entertainment royalty in Australia. He had a gig for a while as lead singer for the Little River Band. His 'farewell tour' was done to every little town and village in Australia with two circus bigtops. One would be in use while the other leapfrogged over to the next venue and was being set up there ready for the next night. I am sure there are plenty of people who are surprised to learn that the Beatles covered theJohn Farnham song "Help"
Although never performed in a concert, John does Led Zeppelin' s Black Dog as a sound check before concerts; check that out.
That's our John! "The Voice". Yes, can and did sing just about anything. Brilliant singer and song writer and all round thoroughly decent down to earth guy. An absolute Legend here in Aust. { Suggest you listen to his 'Burn For You' he wrote for his wife while out on the road, touring, and missing her. And much more! } 😊
Black Dog ... he sang that as a warm up for his voice and the band. Theres only an audio version. A- mazing!!!
John Farnham has an amazing voice!
The ending of the song always reminds me of 6p's music, especially Australian bands of that time; down to earth, and gravelly.
Excited you are doing this. I may not make the premier even though it is on at an excellent time for me. Will try though💕👍🦇
John Lennon heard this version and thoroughly approved. Said he'd wanted to do the song more like this but producers insisted it be more pop. John Farnham has done everything from opera to ACDC to Led Zeppelin. R&B/soul as well.
He sings 3 octave range and all different genres, opera, rock, and everything in between.
Fabulous Farnsy! Get well, John!
Listen to him singing Black Dog by Led Zep, he hits Plant's notes note for note. And he is more clear with little to no distortion.
One of the best singers ever.
💯
You finally got to John as you promised and I liked your knowledgeable reaction. John Farnham is a vocal gymnast with a big range and wonderful interpretation. He is a tenor who can sing in over 20 genres, from soft ballads to hard rock and everything in between. He is the master of the mike and has his audiences in the palm of his hand. His rapport with them is wonderful. And he is funny as well. He has sung with, and been praised by, famous singers and musicians from around the world. And he is a humble and good man. Always see and hear John LIVE and preferably in concert where his soul shines. John is well-loved in Australia. More of him, please.
Hey I reacted to this over a month ago… it was blocked and my appeal went unnoticed so I won after 30 days. So glad it finally cleared. Definitely more on the agenda. ✌️
@@michaelgoyettemusic Glad you are going to continue to react to John Farnham, Australia's incomparable singer .Looking forward to it. You will find that John's singers and band are top level talent, too, including the piano player whose timing you remarked on - David Hirschfelder, who has written much music including film scores and has won awards.
Oh and black dog cover... he only used it as warm up!
A great reaction to a Man at the top of his game.
He IS the voice.
I'm sure someone else in the comments will give you the full details, but Freddie Mercury was a huge fan and John was offered the role of lead singer by Brian May at some point. Can someone else fill in the blanks for me?
