  • Here’s a look at what is going on inside of the 1987 Playmates Talking Jill Doll. There’s very little to no information out there on how these dolls operate and how to repair them. It took me about a year and countless hours just tinkering to figure things out. Lots of frustration with trial and error! I’m this video you can see the various parts that make her operate, as well as come tips on cleaning and repairing your Jill.

is it just me or were kids toys more complicated then they are now? My hates off to the whole team who came up with how all the stuff inside would work and all that! i'm speechless! NO ONE would come up with that today! i wish more dolls were made like this as its worth it to me and so many others i'm sure or maybe its just me because i love technical stuff like this. I've NEVER seen a more complicated doll in my life! has anyone else seen one more complicated then this? i really wish i could've seen the doll being built in the factory originally.

Haha yes now toys are just iPads it seems. Jill is both mesmerizing and a mystery. I wish I could have sat in on that meeting when they presented the idea of Jill to the playmates board. I can’t even call her a doll or toy..she is straight up robot. There has never been and probably never will be anything created like her again. As the years go by her plastic is starting to deteriorate and I fear one day she will be no more. That’s why I’m doing my best to find all her tapes and outfits so I can document them for future generations to enjoy.

It’s not just you, dolls were so much better back then and actually WERE dolls, I cringe seeing the so-called “dolls” coming out now with all the makeup, huge ugly big eyes, etc. Glad I didn’t grow up with those, but similar dolls like Jill that actually looked cute and natural. What happened that, to the REAL actually nice natural cute looking dolls like this? Even the baby dolls nowadays changed for the worst like that too, they aren’t “baby dolls” anymore…

@@princesspeachfan100 I agree 100%. I miss the 80's and 90's so much. The same issue with BARBIE. They aren't as good as they were and the ideas aren't that great either. Stuff today mostly sucks.

It’s sad that Jill was too far ahead of her time. The tapes were really not suited to the kind of random access it required. If they were to release an updated version of Jill that used discs or cartridges (or even downloads), with today’s voice recognition technology, I’m sure she would be a hit!

Yes, future Jill owners/restores, tread very lightly around this tape head. Without it, or if it is out of kilter, your doll will not work as she should. There is no way to calibrate a jilltape head on like a traditional stereo cassette player. It’s nearly impossible and takes lots of very finite turning of those screws and if they are off dead center, you are going to have problems. She may talk, but she won’t listen to your answers. She just plays like a normal cassette player. This is because the tape head isn’t Reading the set of data tracks to tell her to pause her tape and listen to you. She may speak two or three copies of herself at once and act. This is because the tape head is skewed toward the side of the tape where the different audio tracks are for the various responses. She may be moving a little bit as in twitching weirdly but not talking and making this bizarre gurgling sound. This is because the head is moved too far in the direction of the data track rather than toward the area where the audio is stored. If it is skewed too far, as Mark said, she will eat the tape. It’s a pain in the keister to get it untangled from all those wheels and belts and pulleys and thingamabobs in there. It’s not easy folks. I am totally blind and I was trying to adjust it. At that time I didn’t have person to person help as in with someone there. Somehow, one of the wires that goes from her Circuit board to the tape player came loose. I was not working in that area at all. I was working with the tape head which was below them. Jill is so complicated and porcelain. Some days I think if you look at her wrong, she will decide to fail somewhere. Lol!
But there is this weird fire in me to figure out all her secrets. Two get her going as best as possible for a 35 year old doll. That is this crazy futuristic combination between digital and analogue that was never supposed to work at that time. Two document all of her stories and their various outcomes. To figure out who her voice actress is. To maybe give her her own Wikipedia page with diagrams of her internals and photos and stuff. I have to give credit where it is due. To Billy Mobley who gave me the confidence to even look inside Jill. He didn’t tell me I couldn’t because I can’t see. More than that, he is around if I throw him a message. I also have to give credit to Cricket and Corkys Clubhouse for picking up where Mr. Mobley left off and being a constant encouragement through this crazy process. Why it’s so important to me to get her going, I don’t know. I feel like she was dealt an unfair hand in the history of toys and animatronics. Heck, even robotics. She’s not just a talking head like her younger siblings. All of my friends are like you have put nearly $1000 into this doll just sell her or throw her away or something.

Actually alot of the things you said in the video could be helpful advice for alot of doll's not just Jill. I'm going to try the argan oil for my: Baby Brother Tender Love doll by Mattel. Sounds perfect for his hair & also for 2 of my Baby Talk doll's made by Galoob in 1985. I have there hair mostly smooth but alway's looking for better ideas to get there hair silky-smooth. Your tutorial was riveting~ 🥰👍 You'll find out with Playmates doll's. There in a whole class of there own when it comes to mechanical doll's. There also very unique with playmates doll's being very different from one to another. Also there accessories will only work with them & are not interchangeable with other mechanical doll's. Alot of my mechanical doll's I have there original accessories but they can also sometimes work with other mechanical doll's. With playmates doll's they require the accessories they came with in order to work. The only one where her accessories are interchangeable is Amazing Amy with the doll My Dream Baby by MGA there accessories are different but designed the same way as for technology part. 🤷‍♀️✌️

I saw that one too! It’s wild because a year ago I was finding her for $100 or so. A few people dropped over a grand on the last few for sale online and now the bar is set on the secondary market. I hate it too because it’s shutting out a lot of people as that’s not a practical number for most. Definitely check thrift stores and your local marketplace. There was a Jill found at a yard sale in Canada just a few weeks ago for $10. Just keep on looking and one will turn up! :)

They did. After Talking Jill failed and they pulled her from production, they needed to use all the leftover parts and outfits. So they made a soft body plush Jill under the line called Precious Playmates. This doll has Jills head but doll eyes that opened and closed, as well as shorter curly hair that came in blonde and auburn. Jill’s outfits are so hard to find that I’ve had to get two of mine from the plush Jill. Like the Cheerleader outfit in the image on this video!

What a cool thing to do, restoring these dolls! Do you know anything about baby talk 1995 model I believe. She takes batteries 2 C & 4 double a. She did talk & her eyes & mouth moved. We still have her, she belonged to my daughter. Born in 1979. I believe I got the doll in a JC Penny's close out sale. She originally was real high, but they had her at a discount price. I think originally she ran about 100$ but purchased her arount 39$ I was extactic at the time. I could have never afforded a 100$ doll. Actully I think I was more excited than our daughter. Lol

Yes these talking toys were so expensive back then you had to wait until things went on sale or clearance. I was lucky to get a Teddy Ruxpin as a kid but I never got his sidekick grubby because he was hard to find and more money. But yes as an adult I can relate because there’s nothing better than getting a good deal on something in the store. Best feeling ever haha.

@@wizzwamf oh man so that whole piece snapped off inside the arm point. That honestly is worst case scenario. But! It can be fixed. Yay! You can take the easiest way out and try using tan JB weld plastic glue. This will work but if you forget and attempt to grab that arm it most likely will break off again.
Option 2 is more permanent and way more tedious work. You have to take Jill apart, take the entire arm section out and dismantle it. You have to really take it down to the motor coming out. Once you do that you can use pliers and snap the broken part out of the socket. Then you can get the part replaced with a sturdy 3D printed part.
